Chapter Text
- So this starts with Gon being ten and the Phantom troupe landing on whale island.
- So basically Gon was hiding uphill from the harbor people watching. He also had a where’s waldo type game going on where he’d try and spot Aunt Mito since she was out doing errands.
- But then the troupe rolls up. And they’re all frustrated from the long boat ride and instead of being rational adults they decide to kill everyone. Gon is still hiding and praying that if he doesn’t move they won’t notice him.
- He finds out who they are when someone just asks and Uvogin pulls up his shirt and is like ‘see this? I’m part of the phantom troupe’
- So eventually they ransack the town for supplies and then leave, and Gon bolts for the forest.
- A few fishermen stop by, as while whale island isn’t very well known to most people, it is pretty well known as a form of rest stop for fishermen. So Gon knows they’re going to spread the news and waits and waits for Ging to come.
- He never does
- (can you tell how much I like gon hating ging? Man’s a dickface and I want gon to realize that. But I wanted him to come to that conclusion in a realistic way and this seemed like a realistic way for that to happen)
- So anyway he spends the next two years hanging out in the forest and training.
- He’s a stronk boy. Very fast. Can run across the entire island and barely break a sweat.
- Btw he’s been like actually living in the forest because the town has ✨trauma✨ attached to it for Gon and being at home just makes him sad because he misses Aunt Mito.
- (please don’t ask me how he registered for the hunter exam. I don’t know.)
- So the captain is mildly concerned by the fact that he apparently has to pick someone up from Whale Island. But he does his job and sure enough, someone’s waiting at the dock
- (btw gon is very scared during the whole time he’s waiting to be picked up. During the last two years he completely avoided the town. He’s lowkey on the verge of a panic attack.)
- So the storm happens and the captain askes them to share their motivations. When Gon hears Kurapikas he immediately makes a mental note to talk to him as soon as possible.
- So Gon in this au has a very different motivation from canon.
- His motivation is to help people left behind like him. He wants to use the benefits of being a hunter to know when an area has been attacked, and then go there and check for survivors. But he still trained to be strong in case he needs to fight people to get people to safe areas.
- (ok but like I realized after I came up with his motivation how cool it is that they’re like...foils not the right word… I’d go with two sides of the same coin. Because in a way, they’re both trying to stop others from going through what they did. Yeah, Kurapika has a bunch of other stuff going like the whole revenge thing, but still. I just think it’s really neat.)
- So Gon says that, although he leaves out the bit about why that’s his motivation.
- Gon, who’s a bit warier in this au becomes suspicious of Tonpa after the “spoiled” juice fiasco.
- So we come to the part after the fight with Hisoka. Gon is running with Kurapika. Ok I think I’m gonna try and write this part.
“I hate the phantom troupe too.” Gon says, seemingly out of the blue.
“What?” Kurapika says, shocked.
“Have you ever heard of whale island?” Kurapika shakes their head. “Nah, didn’t think so. It’s a small fishing village. Mostly just a rest stop. Or at least it was. Two years back they attacked. Killed everyone. I got lucky. Well, sorta. On the one hand, I’m alive. On the other, I saw everyone get killed.”
“I’m sorry.” Kurapika says.
“Don’t be.”
“You know, I think it’s really admirable that you want to help people.”
“Thanks. I suppose from a certain angle your goal of looking to destroy the phantom troupe is admirable as well. I just wish you weren’t ready to sacrifice your life in the process.”
- During the second phase Gon actually figures out the pigs weakness pretty quickly. He’s been around animals enough to know a handful of things about evolution and how animals often have a built-in way to protect their weaknesses
- But the cooking part is...a problem. Gon can technically cook, but only in the way of ‘cook it enough that it’s safe to eat’. He’s not very focused on taste, just making sure he doesn’t get sick. He’s got a decently strong stomach but he still knows it’s best to cook your food.
- So he just does what did back on whale island. He cuts it up.
- He gets a few points for not just roasting the thing whole, but he still doesn’t pass.
- He goes back to his friends like ‘yeah I wasn’t expecting to pass. I only know how to cook things enough I won’t get sick eating them. I don’t know how to cook in order to make my food taste good.’ Kurapika, who knows about the whole ‘living alone on an island for two years’ thing isn’t very surprised. Killua and Leorio, on the other hand, are confused and slightly concerned.
- Trick tower! Gon still tries to stop Leorio from attacking Tonpa, but this time it’s not because he thinks Tonpa is in any way innocent, but because this is majority rule, and they can’t afford to fight.
- So things are going...fine. But then we get to Kurapikas match against idiot prisoner. His eyes might not turn red like Kurapikas, but oh boy is it obvious he’s pissed. (he’s also lowkey terrified until he realizes it’s a fake tattoo) This is a bit weird to the others, seeing as so far he’s seemed like a happy little child.
- When Kurapika comes back Gon immediately goes over to check if he’s ok.
- Anyway, things progress. I pretend the thing with Leorio didn’t happen. Killua rips a guy’s heart out. Normal stuff.
- Oh look, now they’re stuck in a room for a little over two days.
- (ok but like I haven’t seen like any fanfic for this time, despite the possibilities for character interactions and group bonding between the main four. No, I will not be rectifying this.)
- So Gon thinks ‘hey, Kurapika shared his tragic back story, imma share mine’ so he calls Killua and Leorio over and tells him his tragic backstory.
- (this reminds me of how Todoroki pulled Midoriya aside during the sports festival just to share his tragic backstory. It’s a bit like that but without the secret love child theory or the declaration of war)
- Anyway yeah blah blah
- Gon actually gets away with Hisokas badge. As soon as he had it in his hand he just ran, doing his jumping through the trees like a monkey thing.
- Blah blah snakes blah blah gon can hold his breath for a bit longer in this au but that’s not relevant blah blah
- Hanzo doesn’t break gons arm in this because I want gon to become even more stronk but he does get knocked out since that’s plot-relevant.
