Work Text:

The whole trip to the Schnee Manor Weiss was sneaking glances at her partner, who was laughing and spending time with Oscar, they’ve gotten awfully close and for some reason that made Weiss seem uneasy.

She knew it shouldn’t bother her, Ruby isn’t hers, as much as she wishes she was, and so she had every right to get in relationships and friendships with other people. Weiss had no right to be mad or jealous over something that wasn’t involving her. Yet she still couldn’t help but feel that way.

When they finally got to the Manor Weiss immediately went to her room, entrusting Klein to give her team and the others their own rooms and necessary stuff, and wanting nothing more than to mope around in her own enclosed space. She stayed only for a few minutes as to not make anything seem suspicious, then when she finally reached her room she closed the door and flopped on her bed, just wanting to disappear in it.

Sadly, her moments of peace were cut short when she heard a knock on her door around 15 minutes after she got in. She groaned and got up, fixing herself as fast as she could before opening the door to see who disturbed her peace. To her surprise, it was Blake. Blake who looked worried. Weiss sighed and let her in, she should’ve known that Blake would know something was up. She always knew when something was bothering Weiss.

“Weiss, are you okay? You went to her room the second we got into the Manor. Is everything good?” Blake asked as she sat down on the bed, nothing but sincerity in her voice.

Sighing, Weiss closed the door and made her way over to Blake. There was nothing but silence between them for some time, though Blake accepted it. She was never a person to force someone to tell her their problems, she knew how it felt, so she was always patient.

After getting her thoughts somehow figured out Weiss took a deep breath and turned to Blake, looking her in the eye. Those golden ones having nothing but patience and worry in them.

“Don’t tell anyone about this. I don’t want it to get out and mess with the relationships I’ve built.” Weiss began, waiting for a nod of agreement from Blake, which she got, before continuing.

“Ever since Oscar joined us I feel like Ruby’s been drifting away from her team, and now after the train ride they’ve gotten really close. This shouldn’t bother me, she’s her own person and can hang out and be with whoever she wants. Yet I still can’t help but feel, I don’t know, jealous I guess? It’s frustrating and it’s been messing with me, if I say something I risk our friendship and I never want to give that up.” She said in almost one breath, then exhaled deeply, like a weight was just lifted off of her back.

She should’ve told someone, anyone, sooner because it felt refreshing. Though that might have been because Blake was the one she was talking to. Blake was her best friend ever since they sorted things out at the beginning of their school year, she could go to Blake for anything and she’d always be there for her.

Blake put her hand on Weiss’ for comfort, she somehow sensed how even if this was refreshing and stress relieving it was still scary to admit, Blake knew how she felt being a similar situation herself.

“Ok, so to put it bluntly, you have a crush on Ruby and you’re scared to admit it to anyone, even yourself, because you don’t want to ruin your friendship and partnership, despite it bothering you this much.” Blake started, looking back at Weiss who only nodded slowly. Blake then continued

“Well, my advice, talk to Ruby, I can tell you’re really scared and worried about it, but you don’t have to mention anything about you liking her. You can just talk to her like you always do and squeeze in a few questions about Oscar, that way you can tell if she likes him romantically or not, based on her answers and body language. I know you out of all people can read body language really well, guess you can thank me for that.” She laughed and got a slap on the shoulder by a chuckling Weiss. Glad she at least made her laugh.

“Yeah ok, I guess I can try and do that, it’s not too risky.” Weiss looked back up at Blake who nodded before she continued, “Thank you for this Blake, talking to someone about this made me feel better.” She finished and Blake just offered her a warm smile and a hug, which Weiss gladly accepted.

And with that Blake left, though not before telling Weiss dinner was going to be served soon. Closing the door Weiss then went back to her bed and just laid there on her back, just staring at the ceiling. She didn’t like lying to her friends, but sometimes it had to be done. Sure, talking to someone did take off some of the weight, but it didn’t really help, not as much as she told Blake it did.

She was still stuck on what to do, if there was something she could do that wouldn’t end up hurting her or Ruby. Though right now her mind couldn’t think of anything, so she just grabbed a pillow and groaned. This is way too stressful for her, it was messing with her brain and logic.

After who knows how long of staying like that Weiss decided it was enough moping for right now and got up, making her way to the bathroom to fix her hair and makeup, maybe even change clothes, though she decided not to, besides, anything could happen so they had to be ready to fight. And with that, she got out of her room and went into the dining room, where her team, along with Oscar, Jaune, Nora, Ren and Penny where already there. She decided to sit next to Ren, trying to play it safe but also not wanting to come between Blake and Yang’s relationship, seeming as though they’ve gotten extremely close since they reunited.

The whole dinner Weiss eyed Ruby and Oscar, though less than she wanted to since she didn’t want to get caught, and after every glance her appetite was going down.

---

That was 2 days ago and Weiss still hasn’t done an attempt to talk to Ruby about anything close regarding her feelings and their friendship. She thought, maybe doing nothing was for the better. Maybe doing nothing will make these illogical feelings go away and maybe ignoring them will make things go back to how they were with Ruby and her. But even she wasn’t stupid enough to think that. As a logical person, she knew pushing down and suppressing her feelings will only hurt more once they get stronger.

That’s why, Weiss being in a particularly sad mood, she decided to go out and hunt grimm. Sure, it was midnight and everyone was asleep, and sure this was practically a suicide mission, she thought she’d be able to handle it. Weiss never was a suicidal person, but if she died in battle at least she’d die a hero.

Putting on her boots she got up from her bed and went to grab Myrtenaster from her case, before she got out of her room and into the hallways as quietly as possible. The last thing she wanted was to get herself caught going out on a grimm hunt.

She somehow managed to get to the front gates of the Manor without waking up anyone and she exhaled a small sigh of relief. Now for the other obstacle, opening the gates without making too much noise. The gates were big, and therefore they made noise when opened or closed.

Slowly but surely Weiss opened the door, making as little noise as possible and made herself an opening big enough for her to fit through. Holding the gate door open she squeezed through and closed it as slowly as she opened it. She leaned on it and sighed in relief. Now she was finally out and didn’t have to worry about waking up anyone. All she needed to do is to go far enough so no one hears her fighting, which wasn’t a problem.

A few minutes of walking she saw a red cloak, sitting on a rock in front of the forest. ‘Wonderful.’ Weiss thought to herself. She took a deep breath and continued walking, though before she got too close she thought sprinting away from Ruby would be a good idea, she can launch herself and run as fast as she could, make herself seem as a bird or something.

Nodding to herself Weiss forms a glyph, gets in position, and she boosts herself as far as she could, almost stumbling forward from the push. She manages to sprint through the rock and into the forest but then she feels herself being lifted. Looking around she realizes Ruby caught up with her and picked her up.

‘Fuck, my plan failed.’ She whispers to herself as Ruby runs back to the rock she was sitting on and puts Weiss down. She should’ve seen this coming, Ruby’s semblance is literally speed, no matter how many pushes she does with her glyphs Ruby’s always going to be faster.

“What was that about Weiss? Why are you awake and in your fighting gear?” Ruby frantically asks looking at Weiss, though she was avoiding Ruby’s gaze. She just couldn’t face her, not now.

Ruby seems to realize something was wrong so she gets closer though right when she was about to bring her hand up to Weiss’ shoulder, Weiss pushes it away and takes a step back, all the while looking down at the ground.

“Weiss? Is everything alright? What happened?” Ruby asks sincerely, worry oozing from those words and that made Weiss shudder. She hated worrying her team, especially Ruby.

When Ruby didn’t get an answer from Weiss she extended her arm to try and put on her shoulder again, though her hand was pushed away again and she saw Weiss just shaking her head, still looking down. She’s never seen Weiss this vulnerable her entire time she’s been besides her and that broke her heart. She hated seeing people cry and be upset, that’s why she always tried to help and be the shoulder people leaned on for anything.

“Weiss…” Ruby whispered, Weiss barely heard her voice and she despised how shaky it was. She hated hurting the people close to her.

Taking a deep breath, Weiss brought her shaky hands up to her face, wiping away some tears that fell before holding them together in front of her. She looked up, though still not meeting Ruby’s gaze and let out a trembling breath. The face Ruby had of sheer worry and concern mixed with sadness made Weiss’ heart break right then and there.

She inhaled, holding back the tears that threatened to fall and pursed her lips, she had to tell Ruby something, anything but the truth so she could at least put her partner at ease.

“I-I just wasn’t feeling well a-and wanted to do some hunting to tire me out.” She managed to croak out. God, even her voice was weak and vulnerable.

“Weiss, tell me truth. Are you ok? What happened? Let me help, please.” Ruby pleaded, moving forward but Weiss shook her head again, taking another step back.

“Look R-Ruby, I don’t want to get in your way. You look so happy now, and even if it hurts seeing you happy with someone else, at least you’re happy, and I never want to take that away from you. Even if your heart belongs to someone else, I’ll always be your partner, even if those bright smiles that warm my heart aren’t for me. I guess we were just never meant to be, and I’ll respect your decision if you’re mad and never want to talk to me again. Even if we were never meant to be together, I hope he treats you well, even if it hurts to know you’ll never be mine, at least you're going to be with the one you love.” Weiss ranted, then widened her eyes, realizing what she just confessed.

Well, there was no backing out of it, so it was all or nothing. So Weiss continued, never looking at Ruby, not even her boots.

“I hope y-you get to live the happy life you’ve always dreamt of having, even if it doesn’t involve me. As much as my heart yearns for you I’ll push my feelings aside for the sake of our partnership, our team, and post importantly, the world. I don’t want my stupid feelings to get in our and your way. I just wish you get to be happy with the love of your life and I’ll always be there for you, even if it’s just as friends.” Weiss finally said the things she was bottling up for years.

There was silence between them for a few seconds, which felt like an eternity to Weiss and then she finally plucked up the courage to look up. Hesitantly, she met Ruby’s eyes, and for once, she had an unreadable expression. That frightened Weiss, she knew she shouldn’t have said anything, should’ve gone with the other shittier option of lying to the love of her life just so she didn’t have to confess.

Then, before she knew Ruby was right in front of her, one hand on her hip and the other cupping her cheek. She felt Ruby’s thumb brush along her face, wiping the fallen tears, and Weiss wished she could feel that warmth forever. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, even if she was still unsure of how Ruby felt. Resting her hand where it was before, on Weiss’ cheek, Ruby finally spoke.

“Weiss… Is, is this about me and Oscar?” Ruby asked, Weiss finally being able to see something in those silver eyes she loved so much. Hope and understanding. That confused Weiss, shouldn’t Ruby be angry? Sad? Annoyed? Why was she understanding?

Weiss just nodded, closing her eyes shut as she tried her best to hold back more tears. Expecting to get yelled at, or Ruby to get mad, cry or run away she shut her eyes even more, not wanting to see Ruby’s face when that happens.

But that never does.

Instead, she feels Ruby’s thumb wipe away the fresh tears and then a pair of soft lips on her. It was only for a second and Weiss almost didn’t register it as a kiss.

Weiss instantly opens her eyes and for the first time that night, she meets Ruby’s gaze without hesitation. She looked stunned from what just happened, but Ruby just stood there, her hand moved from her cheek to her hip. All of those unreadable things she saw from Ruby just a moment ago were gone, and all she saw now was pure adoration, happiness… and love. There was love in those silver eyes Weiss fell in love with. Weiss’ mouth opened a tiny bit in surprise, which elicited a small chuckle from Ruby. Weiss huffed and slapped Ruby’s shoulder, the action making Ruby fully start laughing, Weiss’ heart immediately fluttering at the sound as she chuckled along with her.

“Really? Is that what you think Weiss? Well, I hate to break it to ya, but there’s nothing between me and Oscar. He’s a cool dude, but I don’t like him like that.” Ruby began after she calmed down from the laughter.

She moved closer to Weiss again, this time cupping her cheeks with both hands, and looking deeply into those icy blue eyes she adored. Then she continued.

“You on the other hand…” Ruby trailed off, her voice falling off to a whisper before she leaned in.

This time, Weiss was aware of what was happening, and closed her eyes, leaning forward and capturing Ruby’s kiss halfway, putting her hands on Ruby’s wrists. They both sighed in their kiss, this was everything Weiss has every wanted since the day she met Ruby, and now here she is, doing it. The kiss was passionate, even better than Weiss had yearned for. They broke away to catch their breath before they kissed again, this time deeper, and Weiss wrapped her hands around Ruby’s neck while Ruby’s went to her waist, bringing their bodies closer. They both conveyed their love and feelings into the kiss, things they could never say with words.

Once air became a problem they parted, just a string of saliva connecting them. As they both panted Weiss put a hand on the back of Ruby’s head and rested her forehead on hers. After a moment of trying to catch their breath, icy blue eyes met silver ones… And nothing. It was just silence between them, they understood each other without having to speak, their eyes told them everything they needed to know.

But then Weiss had to say it, even if Ruby realized it through the moment they just shared, Weiss had to put it out there, even if it was just for Ruby or the whole world, she had to say it. So, releasing one hand from its place on Ruby’s neck, she cupped her cheek and something in Weiss’ eyes glowed, almost sparkled.

“I love you, Ruby.” She breathes out. Even if she was determined to say it, it was still hard and scary.

But Ruby only chuckled. She chuckled before resting her forehead on Weiss, getting in the same position as they were before Weiss spoke.

“I love you too Weiss Schnee.” Ruby says, a warm smile on her lips that made Weiss heart jump out of her chest, butterflies flying in her stomach like never before.

Even after the kiss they shared Weiss still let out a sigh of relief, which elicited a tiny chuckle from Ruby again. Then she leaned and pecked her lips again, since that kiss, Weiss thought she’d probably never get tired of kissing those lips.

“God, I’ve wanted to say that for way too long now.” Weiss let out a breathy laugh, Ruby following suit before they kissed again.

Weiss cut it short though, she wasn’t done talking yet, even if she did want nothing more than to kiss those damn lips forever.

“I really love you Ruby Rose.” And with that they kissed again, under the night sky.

Under the same skies they shared battles, something good came out of it too. Those shining stars and the moon lighting up the rest was the perfect scenery Weiss wanted to share her first kiss with the one who she’s loved for years.

Through all of those nights yearning for this moment, it finally came, and Weiss was glad she could ask out Ruby this way, the way that didn’t even require to ask the question, just the connection between them being enough to understand each other.

So they kissed, under breaking bright moonlight, their connection growing even stronger, as friends, partners, and most importantly, now lovers.
