He couldn't tell.
Was his vision blurry because of the rain, or because he refused to wear his glasses despite Gwen's nagging attempts to put them on?
Either way, it was mesmerising watching the street lights blend together, occasionally mixed in with the red from the cars and colors from signs at shops.
He sat on the roof of his apartment building, soaking wet due to the outpour happening all over him, his mind a blank.
" you're gonna get a cold"
Suddenly, there wasn't a constant shower over him, instead a dull pink light glowed ever so slightly, the hue seeping into the colorful veiw he was once quietly enjoying.
He'd been alone on the roof for a while now. It hadn't been raining when he got there but once it had started, he made no attempt to move.
" is everything okay Kev?" Gwen asked, sitting down beside him on the block of cement he was on. Kevin had been quiet ever since he got back from his latest mission with her cousin from a far away galaxy.
Another day, another war, another mission to bring peace to the people. It had become a routine at this point.
With her finals at Freidkin, she had decided to skip this adventure. There would always be other ones.
She was well aware of the horrors of war that they experienced on these trips and it worried her Kevin may have experienced or seen something. Despite having been together for a few years now, it still annoyed her to this very day when he kept things from her.
" I've been thinking G" he started, and Gwen settled in a bit, glad he'd finally said something.
" you know the last time I was on a rooftop drenched in rain? It was when I was ten.
Mom and Harvey were out of town and I came back home from school that and couldn't find the key.."
Oh, it was story from his past.
Kevin fixated on the sirens and the angry honking of cars that rang through the air while his girl simply fumbled with her fingers.
Kevin's childhood was always a sensitive topic and it meant he was being extremely vulnerable when opening up. The red head sat closer to him now, her head resting on his shoulder as if to tell him she's there. And she's listening.
" I think I lost it, and my folks wouldn't be home for another hour or so. So I went up to the roof of my building and sat there. The clouds were grey so I didn't really think much of it when it started to rain. And you know what, I was actually glad that it did. "
He chuckled, but she could tell it wasn't much of a happy joke.
" it made me feel better in a way ya know? Becuz now I could cry and no could tell. But I couldn't cry too much either since it hurt from the blackeye I got at school that day "
Gwen clenched her fists. It hurt her knowing the pain he had gone through. How she wished she could just go back in time and help him every time she heard a story about his past.
Kevin had a mini mental flashback to earlier that day, of how the school bully had shoved him into the swing during recess, giving him the black eye as he stood up to try to fight back.
"oh look, the scrawny freakshow wants to fight!"
That afternoon, a 10 year old boy sat alone in the roof of his apartment building, drenched in rain, wondering if this was all his life was ever going to be.
He smiled now at the warmth besides him today, her small hands intertwining with his.
He looked up at the sky, at the grey clouds through the transluscent shield. It was hard to believe it was just 12:30 in the afternoon. Anyone could've sworn it was atleast 7 in the evening with how much darkness was covering the atmosphere.
They sat there silently for a bit, listening to he piter - patter of the water around them, before Kevin began again.
" on the way back, Ben and I stopped back on Luxia for a little break, and I saw this thing at one of the shops that reminded me of you"
His left hand reached into his jeans pocket, shuffling around to find it. Gwen propped up a bit now, looking at him with curiosity.
He closed his fist and turned to face her now, looking over her face, her green eyes slightly wide with interest.
" I know you've talked about your life and how you've always wanted things to play out. I respect that. And I know you're just 22 and think this is too early for us."
He opened his fist, revealing a tiny pale azure crystal, attached to a obsidian band that glittered like the night sky.
The planet of Luxia was famed for many things. It's delicacy, the scenery, but it's most prized possession was it's rare and unique jewels. Aliens from different galaxies would travel lightyears and spend tremendous amounts for them.
A story claimed these jewels originated from end of 2 lovers, who over a millions years ago ran from threat of the Titans that once ruled the universe.
They seeked shelter in the caves of Luxia, before the Titans showed up and melted the area around, the heat transforming the rocks to the precious gemstones known today, but killing the lovers in the process.
Over time, the stones were mined and were exchanged between lovers as a sign of their undying love for one another.
" since I had helped out over there a couple of months ago with the whole Zs' Skayr situation, the owner let me have a pick of whatever I wanted."
He let out a deep sigh, and then continued nervously,
"I love you Gwen, and there's no one else I'd rather spend eternity with than you"
Gwen stared at the ring, and then back at him.
Her shield over them flickered and rain poured through.
" Kevin I-" she hesitated.
Truth be told, she'd been thinking about this as well, for a couple of months now actually. She knew that it was always going to be Kevin no matter, so why bother delaying it?
She smiled.
" Kevin, there's no one I'd rather be with either."
He quickly hopped of the cement block and got down on one knee, not wanting to waste another moment.
" Gwendolyn Tennyson, would you do me the honor and be my wife"
She giggled as she hopped of the blocked and sat down to his level, looking over the excitement on his face.
" forever and always, yes."
This afternoon, a 23 year old man sat on the roof of his apartment building, with the girl he loved in his arms, both drenched in the rain, hoping this was how life was always going to be.
