What Lies Within Us

Summary:

Sonny and Amanda have disagreed on cases from time to time, but when the SVU squad is hit with a big case over Halloween weekend that is connected to someone they all used to know, they find themselves more at odds with each other than ever before.

Notes:

It’s not a sequel, but I did set this story in the same universe as “I Do, Again.” I’m guessing most of you probably read that, but if you didn’t thats ok. The only thing you need to know is this world is set about 2 1/2 to 3 years in the future; Sonny and Amanda are married and added a daughter to their crew, Andie. Anyways, I know I have other stories hanging around that I’ll get back to finishing up, but I’ve had this idea floating in my head for a while and I really wanted to write a story that featured a certain someone in it. Also, I know its still summer but I set this around Halloween because the theme works really well with casting doubt/suspicion, etc. I added as much fluff as possible and will when I can, but there will definitely be some angst, so be ready for it! - Jasmine

Chapter 1: The Mighty Fall

Chapter Text

Sonny and Amanda’s Apartment - Monday Morning

*******************

I can’t believe Andie’s gonna be one on Saturday.” Sonny said before taking a bite of a piece of pancake the little girl was trying to feed him.

“I know.” Amanda said sighing as she poured herself a cup of coffee. “Seems like yesterday she was a itty bitty baby and now she’s almost walkin’ and pretty close to talkin.’”

“Stop growin’ up.” Sonny told his giggly daughter as he gently moved Andie’s wild morning hair out of her face, kissed her forehead, and took another bite of a pancake triangle she shoved toward his mouth.

He smiled as he stood up from by Andie’s high chair, grabbed his own cup of coffee that sat on the kitchen counter and took a sip. “Is your mother gonna come down for her party?”

Amanda nodded. “Yea. She’s not a fan of the theme, but whatever.”

“Halloween?” Sonny asked, furrowing his brows. “Why not? Andie’s birthday is a couple of days before the holiday. It makes perfect sense. It’s not like we’re goin’ to make it scary.”

Amanda simply shrugged. “Your sisters are all coming, right?”

Sonny took another sip of his coffee. “Everyone except Theresa. She’s gonna be out of town Saturday, but she told me she’s got a gift for Andie that Bella’s bringin.’”

Amanda nodded and fixed her mouth to respond, but was interrupted by her cell phone going off nearby on the kitchen table. She picked it up, read the message to herself and groaned.

“What’s wrong?” Sonny asked, looking concerned.

“It’s Al.” Amanda said as she began feverishly typing away. “He’s saying he isn’t gonna switch weeks. Even though he told me it was fine last month.”

Sonny rolled his eyes. “He’s really going to make us cancel Andie’s party and push it back a week? Because that’s what we’d have to do. Billie wants and needs to be there. She’s her sister.”

“What’s even more annoying is she’ll probably spend half of the weekend with her babysitter.” Amanda added as she continued typing. “Even though he only gets Billie one weekend a month.”

She sighed as she read through another message.

“I’m gonna call him.” Amanda said as she began dialing Al’s number. “I’ll do it in the bedroom, in case I raise my voice…I don’t want to upset Andie.”

Sonny nodded as he watched Amanda retreat into their bedroom. He then turned his attention back to Andie, who was finished with her pancakes. Sonny had just finished cleaning the syrup off her face and wiping down the tray on her high chair when his wife re-entered the kitchen.

“So how’d it go?” He asked as he lifted Andie out of her high chair and held her.

Amanda sighed. “He still won’t switch, but he did eventually agree to let her go to the party during his time. Said he or his babysitter will bring Billie.”

“I guess that works.” Sonny said with a tinge of aggravation in his voice. “Speakin’ of Billie, we should probably drag her and Jesse outta—“

Just then two blonde tornadoes came storming into the kitchen.

“They must’ve smelled the pancakes.” Amanda told her husband, chuckling. She then directed her attention toward her two older daughters. “Good morning girls.”

“Mornin.’” Jesse said as she took a smiling Andie, who was reaching for her, into her arms and spun her around once.

“Good morning.” Billie said in Andie’s direction in a deep, Gremlin sounding voice, which caused her little sister to laugh.

Sonny and Amanda briefly smiled at each other before Amanda took Andie to her room to get her ready for the day while Sonny fixed Jesse and Billie each a plate of pancakes.

Precinct - Monday Early Evening

*******************

“I can’t believe how busy its been today.” Kat groaned as she hung up her desk phone.

“I know.” Fin said as he grabbed keys to a police car and put on his jacket. “Don’t these clowns out here causing trouble know its not Halloween yet?”

Amanda was about to respond but was cut off by Liv, who poked her head outside of her office. “Rollins, you got a second?”

She nodded and made her way into the captain’s office.

“Everything alright?” Amanda asked. She then gestured toward the door. “Should I close—“

Liv shook her head. “No, no you can it leave it open.” She then removed her glasses and set them down on her desk. “I know I gave you Saturday off and I’m not going back on that, but I’ve gotten word from Hudson’s campus security that they’re hearing about a lot of on and off-campus Halloween parties this Saturday. More than usual. This, on top of all the other usual chaos we deal with during this time of year. So once Andie’s party is over, I’m gonna need to have you on standby.”

Amanda nodded. “That’s fine. I’m not surprised, honestly. Its only Monday and we’re swamped. Still, I’m gonna keep my fingers crossed that there’s no drama at Hudson this weekend.”

Liv sighed. “I think there’s a greater chance you’ll see pigs fly first.”

“You’re probably right.” Amanda admitted. “Which is why I’m never lettin' the girls go there.”

Liv chuckled slightly. “Noah won’t be going either.”

Just then Amanda’ desk phone started ringing. “Better get back to it.” She told her captain as she exited the office and headed back to her desk.

Sonny’s Parents House - Staten Island

Saturday Afternoon

*******************

Despite the initial drama surrounding the situation with Al and whether or not Andie’s birthday party would have to be moved, everything went off without a hitch and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Especially the birthday girl, though she was a bit confused about what was going on. More so when everyone around her started singing.

“Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Andie. Happy Birthday to you!”

Amanda placed a chocolate cupcake with orange frosting down in front of Andie, who’s first inclination was to grab at the lit candle, but Amanda quickly moved and held her hand away from it.

Jesse and Billie, who stood nearby in matching plastic witch hats, walked over to their little sister.

“You have to blow, Andie.” Jesse told her.

“Like this!” Billie added, as she and Jesse went through the motions and showed her how to blow out the candle.

Andie shifted her head back and forth between them both and then redirected her attention onto the cupcake. She attempted to mimic her older sisters, but struggled. However on one of her attempts she ended up sneezing instead and, as a result, the candle went out.

“That works.” Sonny said chuckling as he continued recording the moment.

Amanda removed the candle from the cupcake and gave it to Andie who, having never had a cupcake before, was a little hesitant to eat it but once she brought it to her mouth and took a small bite, her blue eyes grew big and she immediately took another big bite.

Sonny stopped recording, put his phone down and bent down beside his daughter. “How is it Andie? He asked her.

Andie took the remainder of the cupcake in her hand and smashed it into his face, which caused everyone at the party to erupt in laughter.

Sonny licked some frosting he’d taken off his face with his finger. “It’s good. Really good.” He said while smiling at Amanda, who was still laughing.

Sonny and Amanda’s Apartment - Saturday Night

*******************

“Both girls still sleep?” Amanda asked her husband as he walked into their bedroom and closed the door behind him.

Sonny nodded as he stripped down into his boxers. “Yup. I can’t believe Andie fell asleep so early tonight. She must’ve been exhausted from her party today. I just hope she isn’t waking us up at 5 tomorrow morning as a result.”

“Ditto.” Amanda said as she slipped under the covers of their bed. “What time are you picking Billie up tomorrow?”

“Around 3p.” Sonny said to his wife as he got into bed beside her.

Amanda nodded. “I hope she’s in a good mood when she gets home. I feel like whenever she comes back from Al’s she’s always in a bit of a funk.”

Sonny opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by Amanda’s cell going off. The blonde sighed as she reached over to her nightstand and answered the call from Liv.

She was mostly quiet as she listened intently to her captain speak for a long while before eventually telling her, “Ok, I’m on my way.”

Sonny ran a hand through his messy locks. “What happened?”

“A girl was pushed off the rooftop of an apartment building where a bunch of Hudson students were having a costume party inside.” Amanda said as she ended the call and got up from the bed. “She’s alive, but barely. Completely unresponsive.”

“How do they know she was pushed?” Sonny asked as he sat up a little more in the bed. “And how is it SVU—?”

“There were witnesses on the ground who saw her get pushed by someone, just couldn’t see who.” Amanda said to him as she pulled on a pair of pants. “And when the paramedics were stabilizing her and putting her in the ambulance, they noticed there were signs of sexual assault.”

Sonny shook his head. “That’s terrible.”

“It gets worst.” Amanda continued as she yanked a shirt off a hanger from inside their closet and put it on. “The victim is Rachel Wilkins.” She said, emphasizing the last name.

Sonny’s eyes grew large. “Wait, the daughter of the Nassau County District Attorney?” He pulled the covers off himself and got up from the bed. “You’re telling me someone raped and tried to kill Frank Wilkins’ daughter? God, Hadid is going to be all over this.”

“Liv told me she already is so you should probably keep your phone close.” Amanda said as she threw her hair into a messy bun. “Fin and Kat are at the hospital, I’m gonna meet Liv at the crime scene. I’ll be back when I can.”

Sonny nodded as he reached for Amanda’s hand and gave it a light squeeze. She then hurried out of the room, grabbed her coat from the coat closet and headed out the door.

Off-Campus Hudson Party - Apartment Building

Crime Scene

*******************

Amanda quickly spotted her captain talking with a couple of patrol deputies and members of CSU as she parked her police car and hopped out.

Liv motioned for the blonde to follow her inside the building toward the security guards’ workstation.

“Part of the rooftop is under surveillance. Unfortunately, not the part of the building where Rachel was pushed from. Still, I wanted to look at it to see if we could spot her and anyone else she might’ve been up there with. Watch it and tell me if you see the same thing I’m seeing.”

Amanda nodded her head slowly and played close attention to the video playing before her.

For the first 30 seconds there wasn’t anything, but eventually Rachel, dressed in a sexy devil’s costume, came into frame followed by someone dressed in all black and wearing a scream mask running after her. The video, which had no sound, showed the two engaged in a heated argument. Halfway through the quarreling, the person in the scream mask took it off and his face was revealed. It was at this point, Liv had the security guard pause the recording. Amanda studied the student’s face and her eyes widened as she came to a startling realization.

Liv pulled her off to the side, away from the security guard, and asked, “Who does that look like to you?”

Amanda whispered. “He was just a kid the last time I saw him, but…it looks like…Nick’s son, Gill.”

Liv sighed. “I thought the same.”

“Oh, man.” Amanda said, rubbing her temples. “This isn’t good. This is not good.”
