Chapter Text
Noya was always an early worker, seeing as the mornings brought motivation even after hard days of practice that made him just want to collapse into bed. But no matter what he would always wake up smiling knowing that he could always do what he loved that day.
Despite having loved the mornings, this one day, he just couldn't bring himself to actually get out of bed. He snoozed his alarm three times before his mom came to wake him up before he was late. And even with the fact that he wasted time sleeping in, he moved slower than ever making himself even more late. He got driven in by his mother that day.
Just walking into the club room and meeting everyone's eyes, they just knew. They knew that there was something wrong with their little libero.
He came in with a straight face and didn't make a scene.
He was quiet…
They never see this type of behavior from the libero. Especially for the first years this is a whole new sighting. No one dared to push any boundaries in fear of what would happen next.
Having gotten changed, Noya headed off to the gym before anyone else planned on starting stretching early.
If he was being truly honest, he wasn't feeling good at all. Waking up that morning sprouted a decent headache that throbbed against his eyeballs and only stirred up his stomach more. He wished he just admitted to his mom that he was feeling sick so he could stay home but he didn't want anyone to think anything bad of him for skipping school.
As he stretched his legs, leaning forward over his body really didn't agree with his stomach. He forced himself into a laying position to settle his stomach. He rubbed his temples to soothe his headache that he could tell was going to turn into a migraine as the day went on.
By the time he felt his stomach settle, his teammates started slowly trickling back into the gym. The third years being the first in, clearly could tell that their little libero was struggling. Him just sitting down was a big red flag. Asahi, being the first to look over at him, motioned Suga and Daichi's eyes over to the second year and they sighed.
“I'm gonna go check on him, he doesn't look too good…” Asahi let them know before walking over to his closest friend. He sat down on the floor next to Noya and swung an arm over his shoulder. “You alright Noya? Your really quiet…” the younger only shrugged.
“Just tired… didn't get much sleep last night..” Nishinoya mumbled out, leaning into Asahi's side.
“Is there anything else bothering you? You look pretty pale if I'm being honest.” the taller one mentioned.
“Got a headache kind of… probably from the lack of sleep.” Asahi placed a hand on Noya's forehead and sighed. Tanaka just then runs into the gym with a ridiculous amount of energy for 5:30 in the morning, scaring Noya out of the trance he was in. making the second year groan and clench his eyes shut.
“I think you have a fever mate. It would explain the headache and the paleness. Anything else hurts that you're not telling me?”
“It doesn't hurt but my stomach feels gross…” Noya whined from his seat on the floor.
“I think you're a sick man. How about you go lay down in the club room, maybe take a nap and after morning practice I will take you to the infirmary.”
“But I wanna play…” his voice laced with tears; almost.
“I know you, Noya. You don't tell me exactly how you feel. I know for a fact your feeling a lot worse than your letting up. So if you go play now your risking passing out; especially from that headache. I don't want you to get hurt man, so please. Lay down till classes start, I'll bring you to the infirmary. If you're feeling better by lunch and wanna go back to classes, I'll think about letting you play. But your not doing morning practice.”
“Fuck Asahi, you sound like Daichi…'' Noya laughed. “But fine. I'll lay down…'' Asahi helped him to his feet and let him walk out of the gym. Moving back to Daichi and Sugawara, Asahi sighed to himself.
“Where is he going?” Suga asked.
“Back to the club room. He actually admitted to not feeling good, so he is going to go lay down until classes start, I'm gonna take him to the infirmary when the school opens.'' Asahi started to nervously scratch the back of his neck.
“Is he okay? I know Noya and he never admits to being sick unless he's really not feeling good. And to skip practice??” Daichi said, shocked.
“He said he had a headache and his stomach wasn't feeling the best. But he tries to tough it out so i think it's more he even had a fever when i checked.”
“Damn man. He never gets sick.”
“I was gonna check on him during one of our breaks, if that's okay.”
“Yea yea, sure. He trusts you the most.” Asahi blushed at those words.
“Well I'm his friend I guess…” he forced out.
“Someone's flustered.” Daichi teased, “but seriously. Noya doesn't let many people into his mind. Consider yourself a god that he let you in without any persuasion.”
“Yeah I guess… I'm just worried about him.”
“That's okay. To be honest we all are. But he will be okay.” Daichi patted asahi on the back with a small smile. “Let's just start practice now.”
“Okay, let's start warm ups!!!” Daichi yelled to the rest of the team.
“Wait, we have to wait for Noya!! He left a few minutes ago.” Tanaka interrupted.
“He's not feeling good. He's gonna rest in the club room till school opens. He probably won't be here for afterschool practice either.” Suga told everyone. Tanaka only just looked at him with concern.
“Is he okay??” Tanaka asked, shocked at the new information.
“He’s fine. He wanted to play but Asahi made him go to sleep. Don’t worry.”
The start of practice went by too slow, having everyone way too quiet not having the wild second year to wake them up. Even Tanaka was a lot more quiet. But by the time they were doing drills, somehow everyone got that energy spike they needed. Tanaka started screaming random commodities. Hinata and Kageyama started fighting over the carrot top, not hitting one of his sets. But it still had an eerie feeling without the little libero.
When the break came around, Asahi didn't even bother taking some time to drink water, he ran straight up to Noya to check on him.
Walking into the room, Asahi couldn’t help but smile at Noya. He was curled up on the floor. Using his bag as a pillow and Asahi's jacket as a blanket.
Asahi's jacket…
He walked in and sat on the floor next to the younger and smiled. He smoothed back his hair, secretly checking his fever.
“Hey Noya? Hey?” He whispered trying to wake him up. The sleeping boy opened his eyes slowly and looked up at asahi.
“Hi…” he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and sat up.
“I just wanted to check on you while we are having a small break. How are you feeling?”
“Worse…” Nishinoya whined and fell into Asahi's side. The older rubbed his hand over Noya's arm in sympathy.
“What feels bad?”
“Migraine and cramps… it hurts ‘sahi…” he whimpered.
“Hey, it's okay. Wanna try and drink some water?” The younger one shook his head slowly.
“Feel sick… I don’t wanna be sick asahi…!!” Nishinoya tears up and shoves his face into Asahi's chest.
“Noya!! If you cry it's gonna make it worse. Let’s just get you to the bathroom. We can just sit for a bit. You might not even be sick.” Asahi gathered him in his arms and carried him to the back of the room where the showers and toilets were.
“You're gonna miss practice though?” Noya looked up at him with sad tear filled eyes.
“You're more important than practice, Noya. I’m staying with you for now.” Asahi sat down with Noya in his lap practically in front of a toilet.
“I just wanted to play but I feel so bad. I’m regretting even coming to school today.” Asahi has never seen this side of Nishinoya. It’s all new to him and it's making him want to panic because if he doesn't calm the younger down, who knows, he might go into a panic attack. Asahi may have experience with panic attacks but he has never had to calm anyone down from them. It’s always him having to be calmed down from them. Usually by Noya.
At this point Nishinoya was sobbing and hiccupping through his tears. Asahi sat Noya up in his arms and just at least made him face towards the toilet just in precaution.
“Hey, Noya, hey. Shh. It’s going to be okay. I need you to calm down.” Asahi ran his hand through Noya's hair, hoping to provide comfort. Noya kept sniffling and whimpering every few minutes. The hiccupping started up again and it got more sickening with every jolt.
The last hiccup sent Noya upright and over the toilet. He coughed harshly followed by a gag.
“…’sahi..?! Help me…!!” He gagged again and spit into the water.
“I'm right here Noya. I'm not leaving. You're going to be just fine. Just get that nasty stuff out, you're going to feel so much better.” the older ran his hand up and down Noya's back, with the other gently massaging Noya's stomach.
He could tell the hand on his stomach was helping cause with the next gag, asahi heard a small trickle of liquid hit the water. After the first round, more came up with every gag until the nausea must have subsided. Noya spit into the water and wiped his mouth off, before flushing the toilet and leaning back into the taller's chest.
“See, you're okay Noya. It's all over, you're gonna be okay.” Asahi grabbed some toilet paper and dried up Noya's tears for him, following with the club room door opening bringing along another familiar voice.
“Noya? Asahi?? Where are you guys?” Daichi.
“We're in the toilets!!” asahi yelled back, with Daichi appearing seconds later.
“Oh, Noya. You okay man?” Daichi asked gently, crouching down and taking in the sad look on Noya's face. The libero nodded and sniffed sadly.
“Sorry I didn't come back, he got sick and I couldn't just leave him.”
“Hey don't worry about that. Listen, practice is over. The school should be open by now so how about you take him to the infirmary. I don't want him to play this afternoon. See if you can take him home, he shouldn't be here.'' Asahi nodded and picked up Noya in his arms again. Daichi threw both Asahi's bag and Noya's bag over the ace's shoulder and let them walk back into the school. There were very little people in the school at the moment so the two volleyball players didn't have to worry about being embarrassed.
The second they were in the infirmary, Asahi laid Nishinoya on the bed and went to talk to the nurse. She checked his temperature and left a bin by his head. His temperature was around 102 so she decided it would be best if he went home for the day.
“His parents aren't home at the moment. Would it be okay if I took him? I don't trust him to take care of himself all alone.'' Asahi asked politely.
“If that's the case it would be best. I will excuse you both from school today. Just stop by the office and tell them you're leaving. Hope he feels better soon!” the lady told them as she gave Asahi a pass. He walked back to Nishinoya and woke him from his little doze.
They both walked to the office then out to asahi car which he was glad he brought today. He got Noya situated and drove back to the youngers house. He felt bad for the libero; never seeing him this vulnerable and sad. Nishinoya sat curled up on the passenger seat, looking smaller than ever; it hurt asahi heart seeing him like that.
Once at the youngers house asahi took care of the bags and guided Noya up to his room. The younger fell straight into his bed and sighed heavily. Asahi laughed at his antics and got some medicine and other commodities that the younger would need. Crackers, water, medicine, fever patches, thermometer.
He sat next to the libero on the bed and helped him under his duvet, crawling in next to him.
“What are you doing? Aren't you supposed to be at school?” Noya asked groggily.
“I got the day off to take care of you cause I don't trust you home by yourself.” asahi laughed. But suddenly stopped when he felt Noya lay into his side.
“Thanks asahi…” he curled up into a small ball of cuddles and practically fell asleep the second he closed his eyes.
It took a minute for asahi to recollect himself from his major blush. He sighed and smiled down at his Kohei. Gently pulling him closer he said in a whispered tone, “your welcome Yuu…” when deciding there wasn’t much else he could do, he fell asleep with the libero.
