Chapter 1: Strange, isn't it?

Chapter Text

“We’ll fight again soon Sonic, but next time, on my terms.”

His ebony rival stated roughly. A few handfuls of dust whirled when he blinked, teleported to who knows where.

“Good riddance.”

The azure hedgehog mentally sighed and spun around to meet his friends, a look of relief is plastered on their faces. They just wiped out the league of villains, who, still got defeated despite their alliance.

As if planned, they gathered round and bumped their fists. Multiple cheers of victory resounded the circle of friends.

“Great job everybody!”

A cheerful voice stated, Amy was obviously proud of the hard-won fight. Knuckles said something to follow up but it was all a white noise to Sonic’s ears, his senses were focused on the retreating figure of Eggman.

“Speaking of which…”

He gathered their attention and they all closed in on Eggman. Sticks grabbed the Eggmobile and passed it on to Knuckles, who relayed it to Amy.

For a while, they played catch with it and eventually got bored. Sonic took it, launched it up in the air and signaled for Amy to hammer the trash towards his lair. He stared at the beach for a moment before speaking.

“I feel hungry, anyone up for Meh burger?”

“You ate that for breakfast and lunch. I think we should all eat outside for an afternoon snack. I baked some macaroons before the fight so Sticks and I will get it while you boys prepare the tables.”

Amy retorted, and with a reluctant Sticks in tow, they head for her kitchen. Sonic took off after Amy, leaving Tails and Knuckles with the preparing.

A blue blur took a pair of macaroons and dashed back towards his own hammock. Lounged there with his head resting on his arm, a macaroon occupying his mouth and his thoughts occupying his brain.

He pondered about today’s occurrence.

They managed to defeat the villains’ alliance so that would most likely lessen the threats of future companionship of their enemies. One thing particularly caught his interest, Sonic couldn’t help but ask himself why Shadow was there.

Sure enough, to beat his ass (I mean, what else?) but his rival wasn’t the type to take orders from anybody, that much was evident so why would he work with Eggman?

Ugh…

“Here’s a better question self, why would you care?”

Without realizing that he said that statement out loud, Sonic halted his thoughts right there and closed his eyes in an attempt to sleep in. Which worked by the way.

o///o

Meanwhile, in Eggman’s lair…

Heavy footsteps rang the walls of the hallway and he that caused the noise caused more as he spat angrily.

“Damn these rodents! I swear, next time, I’ll definitely defeat you and take vengeance on my humiliating setbacks!”

“You’ve said that exactly 37 times before.”

Sigh

“The point is that I won’t give up. Cu.bot!”

“Maybe it would be better if we just did. Sonic and his friends are like those protagonists in every movie shows. They remain undefeated no matter what-”

“Y-yes sir, you’re absolutely right, we shall never give up. Now please excuse us.”

Orbot cut off whatever Cubot was about to say as he felt the conversation took a dangerous shift. Cubot was way too dense to sense the atmosphere and dragged him elsewhere.

“Good save Orbot, I was this close to shutting both of you, useless creations down.”

“Yes, of course.”

With that, a random door automatically opened and both the small robots escaped his bad mood through that exit. Eggman watched as they disappeared from his vision.

Once they did, he heavily sighed as he sat on his huge red chair and shifted a little to attain extreme comfort. His eyes wander to the huge screen in front of him, filled with plans from the recent attack that never knew success.

No matter how much he denied it, everyone knew, including himself that, victory would always be out of reach, for someone like him.

He tried everything. From infiltrating their homes, betraying their non-existent trust and breaking their friendship bonds to working with the other villains in order to up his chances.

Despite that, it didn’t. But they were close to hitting home though. If only he didn’t interrupt Shadow. Eggman realized that he would always be the closest to defeating Sonic whenever someone aids him. Maybe he’ll give that ‘Operation: Evil Squad’ another try.

Feeling hopeful, he hopped out of the chair and prepared invitations to be sent out to the people that gathered here the day before. He also commanded Orbot and Cubot to prepare food and materials fit for a meeting.

Receiving confirmation that everything was ready, he sent out the letters, hopeful that they would be tempting enough to try their hands once more at defeating Sonic together.

A day came and went with no changes.

Out comes another.

And another until it piled into a week.

The rising sun greeted his disappointed self. He stared at his goggles for a moment before deciding to put it on. It blocked the annoying brightness of the morning successfully. While still in his pink pajamas, he headed outside, expecting that the topiary would cheer him instead.

Ksssss

The main door opened automatically only for him to see something that held his mood high. It wasn’t the topiary but it made him happy all the same. One of the invited guests came!

“Oh, I didn’t expect for anyone to come here.”

“Ignoring your foolish letter was a conscious decision.”

“…”

“For the many, of course. I, however, think it deserves another chance. You see, I have a secret weapon in defeating Sonic.”

The visitor took off his top hat, took a folded piece of paper from it and held the said sheet high for Eggman to see. The latter raised an eyebrow in order to relay his wordless question but voiced it out anyway.

“We’re going to destroy him through a papercut?”

Sigh

“These recent days, I’ve thought up of a plan and this piece of paper contains the information we need for the biggest part of the operation. Of course, I’m totally capable of handling it alone but then, your letter arrived and there’s no harm in a good partnership now, is there?”

Eggman pondered for a while, a hand supported his chin as he did so. After a few seconds of narrowed wary eyes, a signature lopsided smile crept up his lips and gestured to the door behind him.

“I see we’re going to discuss a lot. Come in.”

“Your approval is appreciated.”

They nodded in agreement as the two went inside the lair. Unknown to them, an agent managed to eavesdrop in the corner, now aware of their future plans.

Despite that, luck sided with them because the agent never caught a glimpse of their faces. He, who spied, muttered in a low voice only he could hear.

“Tch. I’ll have to come back tomorrow.”

With that, the spy blinked away. He teleported in a different location, a forest lushing in a variety of various greens. One of the trees in particular stood out of the rest, it held many huge branches. Though the length of the trunk was rather short, the width of it was a different story. Up in its second highest branch, a treehouse rested. The very same that he had been building for the past week.

The agent tried to teleport again but this time, his location never changed.

“Argh-”

He held his side torso and greedily inhaled for air. The attempt put a strain on his body. Well, the recent ones. Seeing no other option, he used his Rocket shoes to boost him up instead.

The spy reached for his treehouse just fine but the same cannot be said when he took a step forward. He gritted his teeth in annoyance and forced his body to move but his legs surrendered, causing him to topple on the ground face first.

Tsk

He rotated in order to achieve at least a little more comfort in sleeping above the hard wood. To be fair, he was used in these conditions considering his job.

As for the reason why, he couldn’t teleport freely like before, the agent remembered he lost it at the recent fight with his azure rival. The chaos emerald.

It flew out of his spikes when Sonic pushed him to an old warehouse. He came back to retrieve it at sunset but it was nowhere to be found. It’s been a week now so the agent grew desperate.

That gem was the key to an infinite chance at Chaos Control, a move he had learned way before which was enhanced by the gem. Without the emerald, his teleports would be minimized to only three times a day.

Boy, he was fucked.

The chaos emerald was the key to his current mission as well. However, he now had a lead on where the gem might be so he closed his eyes to rest, despite it being morning.
