Chapter Text
Sumire attended Shujin for her first year of high school, she was all too familiar with the psychotic breakdowns and mental shutdowns after all the driver who hit her sister had suffered a mental shut down. Pushing thoughts of her sister out of her head she boarded the train to her first day at school and she managed to get a seat, but during the ride she saw an elderly woman standing in the crowded subway.
“Please take my seat, my stop is coming up.” Sumire said as she stood up.
“Oh thank you dear.” The woman said before a quiet businessman snatched the seat in a flash, Sumire was impressed by the speed of the man and was stunned into silence briefly.
“Hey, I believe that seat was for that woman.” Someone said but they must've been turned around since Sumire barely noticed.
“And who are you punk?” The businessman asked.
“Just a student.” The voice that intervened said.
“Fine.” The businessman said as he stood up reluctantly and returned to his original standing spot.
“Oh my.” The woman said. “Thank you dear”
The boy turned around and smiled warmly, the boy had a Shujin emblem on his shirt implying that he was a second year student at Shujin.
“Well ma’am I believe the seat is yours now.” He said.
“Thank you dears, both of you.” The woman said as she sat down, Sumire was still in somewhat of a trance at what had just happened.
“Hey this is our stop.” The boy motioned for her to follow and she snapped out of her daze.
Once they were out of the train Sumire was able to work up some nerve. “What is your name if you don't mind my asking?”
“Ren Amamiya.” Ren said with a slight bow.
“You're a second year student aren't you, so I guess that makes you my senpai.” Sumire said. “I'm Sumire Yoshizawa, a first year student.”
“It's nice to meet you Sumire, now come on we’ll be late if we stand around anymore.” Ren said, his voice was firm yet warm and understanding.
“Oh right let's go.” Sumire said as she followed Ren onto the escalator. Once the two exited the subway they saw that it was now raining, Ren tapped Sumire on the shoulder and gestured over to a nearby shop awning.
“I'm guessing you don't have an umbrella either.” Sumire said once they were under the awning.
Ren opened his bag and dug around for a moment before pulling out a small collapsible black umbrella.
“I'm guessing you don't have one, so let's walk together.” Ren said, ‘He is so sweet I would already trust him with almost anything.’ Sumire thought before walking under Ren’s umbrella.
They began to walk to school together, Ren held the umbrella steady wonderfully. Soon a car came by and splashed a puddle throwing water towards Sumire who was standing nearest to the road, Ren moved the umbrella quickly stopping a majority of the water but some of it still landed on Sumire’s shoes and their heads were now moist after Ren moved the umbrella away from the sky.
“Sorry some of it still got you.” Ren said.
“It's alright, I appreciate that you stopped most of it.” Sumire said.
Ren returned the umbrella to stop the rain again.
“Why don't we switch places?” He asked.
Sumire just nodded. ‘How much of this boy's kindness would be spent on me?’ She asked herself before stepping around to Ren’s right.
Ren continued walking once they were situated, he then mentally followed the car that had splashed Sumire and watched it pull into the teacher’s parking lot at Shujin. To Ren’s surprise a girl walked with blonde pigtails, though clearly unprepared for the rain she immediately put her arm up to cover her head and a tall adult stepped out of the other side and opened an umbrella and called her over so she could get some shelter from the rain.
“I've met him, that's Kamoshida.” Sumire said as she followed Ren’s gaze.
“Kamoshida?” Ren asked.
“The coach of the volleyball team.” Sumire said. “How are you in your second year and can't recognize the staff?”
Ren sighed as his eyes dropped slightly. “I'm a transfer student.” He said.
“Why do you sound so upset about that?” Sumire asked, noting his drop in tone.
“I’ll tell you later, it's a long story.” Ren said,
‘He's definitely hiding something but I don't want him to feel obligated anymore then I assume he has.’ Sumire thought.
As they entered the school Ren let down the umbrella and stuffed it back in his bag. “Well Sumire, I think this is where we part ways for now.” He said once he zipped his bag closed.
“Once again thank you so much.” Sumire said as she bowed.
“Don't worry about it, have a good rest of the day.” Ren said, smiling at the girl's embarrassment.
“Thank you senpai.” She said before dashing off to presumably her classroom.
“You think that's him?”
“What the transfer student with a criminal record?”
“Ew, what was he doing with a first year?”
“It's not even been a day and he's already terrorizing a new student.”
Ren frowned. ‘No one should know about my record so why do they?’ He then shook his head either way he needed to meet Kawakami and be introduced to his new classmates.
“Well I’ll be, you're actually on time.” Kawakami said as Ren walked in. “Class is still not for another few minutes so I would explain a few things to you but I have heard people tell you those things a few times already so let's skip it.”
“I do have a question Kawakami-san.” Ren said with a slightly distracted look in his eye that Kawakami didn't catch through his glasses. “People are already talking about my record but I thought that was supposed to be a secret to students.”
Kawakami sighed. “Yeah I've heard students in the hall talking about you too, honestly I have no idea who leaked your record since only the principal and some staff members were told.”
“Then who…” Ren trailed off as he realized Kawakami was looking at him. “Seems school never changes.”
Kawakami looked at him like she wanted to ask him what he meant but decided to keep quiet. “I’ll introduce you to your new class after the bell rings so no one can miss it.”
Just then the bell rang signaling class starting. “Speak of the devil, come with me.” Kawakami said as she stood up from her chair in the faculty lounge, Ren followed after her as she stepped out into the hallway.
In the hallway Ren noticed Sumire talking to Kamoshida with another suit-clad man standing behind Kamoshida.
“Oh thank you for this morning.” Sumire said as she saw Ren pass by. Kamoshida turned to look at Amamiya, and ended up looking down due to him being much taller than Ren.
“This guy?” Kamoshida turned his head towards Sumire, his voice full of barely hidden disgust.
“Let me give you some advice Yoshizawa-san, there are a number of students here you shouldn't get involved with. This one is at the top of that list.” Kamoshida said calmly which betrayed the tone of his words. “A wolf in sheep's clothing this one.”
Ren looked so upset to hear Kamoshida say that, but quickly forced himself to regain his composure. He stood firm and looked Kamoshida in the eye.
“Senpai…” Sumire muttered. ‘What could he have done to Kamoshida before he got to school about an hour ago?’ Sumire wanted to ask Kamoshida about him but decided against it seeing Ren’s reaction.
“Actually we have to go.” Kawakami spoke up.
Ren sighed and dropped his gaze, then turned around to walk with Kawakami. As soon as they rounded a corner Kawakami asked him. “What happened between you and Kamoshida?” She hissed.
“I… don't know this is my first interaction with him, a stellar first impression.” Ren answered.
“Hmmm, well I’ll talk to Kamoshida later and see if I can't get a reason out of him.” Kawakami said.
“Thank you Kawakami-san.” Ren said, his posture and everything was fine but his eyes were extremely clouded.
“You also seemed to know Yoshizawa.” Kawakami added.
“We just walked to school together, it was raining. She didn't have an umbrella and I did.” Ren explained.
Kawakami scoffed and said, “No use in talking about it now, let's just get you to class,''
After Ren introduced himself to his class he noticed a bruised blue hair student who refused to meet his eyeline, and the explosion of whispers throughout the classroom that happened as soon as he introduced himself as he walked over to his seat then the girl sitting in front of him whispered. “Don't let them get to you.”
“I do my best not to.” Ren replied as he took a seat behind her.
“Sorry Takamaki but can you share your textbooks with him for today?” Kawakami asked as Ren took his seat behind the girl with pigtails. “Alright everyone settle down.”
She then turned around and plopped a book onto Ren’s desk. “This is what we’re covering today.” Her finger traced around a few pages.
“Thank you Takamaki-san.” Ren said. She seemed to smile a little at that, but didn’t say anything.
Class then passed by uneventfully.
As soon as Ren stepped out of his classroom he saw Sumire walking down the hall, she then stopped as soon as she saw Ren entering the hall and ran up to him.
“Ren, come with me I have something to tell you.” Sumire put her hand on Ren’s arm as she rushed towards the school roof.
Once they were on the roof Sumire suddenly realized her hand was on Ren and she quickly let go. “Oh, I am so sorry senpai.”
“It's ok.” Ren said. “Anyway, what did you need to tell me?”
Sumire took a big breath in. “Kamoshida in my meeting with him, after the run in with you and Kawakami he whispered something to himself about leaking your record.”
“Damn it.” Ren said his anger made Sumire jump in surprise.
“Senpai…” She said,
“Ugh well I can't do anything about it now.” Ren said as his body language relaxed.
“Why do you assume I wouldn't help you?” Sumire asked.
“Because it's only as bad as it is because I was too nosy one night, and I won't drag you into my mess anymore then I already have.” Ren said.
“I'm going to stand by you through this even if you tell me not to.” Sumire’s eyes burned with conviction.
“Thanks Sumire, I really appreciate it.” Ren said, just then Sumire’s phone rang.
After talking to whoever was on the other side she hung up and put her phone back into her pocket. “That was my dad just being worried about me.”
“Sounds like a loving father though.” Ren said, trying to smile.
“He wants me to come home so I wont miss practice today.” Sumire sighed.
“Practice?” Ren asked.
“I'm a gymnast.” Sumire said. “Anyway, since I have to leave, let's exchange numbers for now.”
Ren wordlessly pulled out his phone, he looked at the screen to see a weird red and black eyeball app on his home screen now. After he deleted it he entered Sumire into his contacts and she entered him.
“Now I should get going.” Sumire said. “Goodbye senpai.”
‘Nothing to do but go “home” for now.’ Ren thought.
