Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“Whitby…” Dracula was unsure what to make of it or even how he was supposed to feel. A life drinking expensive wines and the blood of nobles, perusing true science, and the ultimate power that was just outside his grasp. All of that was gone now as he stood in front of the small, almost pathetic seaside abbey and its surrounding village... If it could even be called that. He was a stranger there… He hoped… He hoped stories of his carnage didn’t make it all the way to such a quiet village. Having to dodge rotten fruit and maybe even a dead fish or two didn’t sound ideal to him… Of course, there could always be worse things.

“Come on Vlad!” Lisa smiled as he felt her tug on his hand, forcing him to awkwardly stumble onto the cobblestone path like a baby deer. She let out a content sigh as he leaned against the towering monstrosity she happily called her husband. “Should we explore the town?”

“Town? Do you see a town?” Dracula playfully scoffed before getting shoved by his wife. It surprised him, however in the end it did nothing but budge him given the difference in weight between them.

“They are doing their best! Besides, it was your idea!” Lisa scolded the man, furrowing her brows as she looked up into those gorgeous pink eyes of his. It was strangely comforting to her, that a masculine, dominant man such as him held what people called a feminine color in his eyes. It was gentle.

Dracula smiled, reaching a hand down to tangle in her hair. “That’s one of the many things I love about you, Lisa… You're not afraid of me, not afraid to fight back.”

“Afraid of you? Oh please Vlad you’re a moody house cat… Should we get a cat?”

“I’d probably eat it…”

Their arms locked together, and the two of them took some time to explore what they would eventually call home.

The smell of sea salt, mischievous teens sneaking around at night, and crabs… When was the last time he had ever seen a crab? Dracula frowned as he began to look back on his old life. A castle that could go anywhere he wanted in a blink of an eye and he missed so much of the world. He barely left the castle after Lisa had passed, there was no point to, no point to feed, no point to bring terror to the world, he just wanted it gone. There were no simple pleasures, no playing in the sand, no laughing over embarrassing moments, no chasing crabs… It was all so grand and important, every step he took was borderline catastrophic. Perhaps something small was just what he needed.

“You seem upset… is something bothering you?” Lisa frowned along with her husband.

“Crabs… As ridiculous as that seems.” Dracula let out a small laugh, shaking his head.

A small stranger in an even smaller town…
