Saw you In the Low Light

Summary:

Fenton let out a laugh, a full body cackle that had him bent over and clutching his stomach. And Gyro couldn’t help but smile as he watched. Wondering briefly, in the back of his mind, if Fenton's laugh always sounded this infectious and light? The way his eyes creased and the curve of his bill was enough to make his heart soar.

Work Text:

Gyro hated hotels. Hated having to stay in some questionable place with stiff bedsheets and questionable odors. He didn’t care how high end they were or what amenities they offered. Gyro muscled through it for any mandatory out of town (or out of country) business trip he had to suffer through as the head of research and development for McDuck Enterprises.

But adding his newly promoted intern and two children did little to make the situation better. Especially when they checked into the hotel for the night and discovered there were only two beds.

One being claimed by said children as they scrambled to throw their bodies on the bed to further cement their claim. And that left Fenton and Gyro to sheepishly exchange glances that had both men blushing and stuttering.

“You can take the bed, Doctor Gearloose.” Fenton insisted, rubbing the back of his neck and averting his gaze to the rest of the room. A singular small sofa at the far end of the room pushed haphazardly against the wall that, if Fenton was being honest with himself, didn’t look very comfortable. At all.

“It’s fine, Fenton.” Gyro responded, “I’ve slept in worse spots.” He hoped he sounded reassuring but doubted his ability at the moment.

“Why do you not just share the bed?” Boyd asked, looking at them with a raised eyebrow. “It makes more sense instead of commencing a pointless argument about who should claim temporary ownership of a bed. A bed that is large enough to fit you both with no problem.”

“Yeah, Boyd’s right.” Huey chimed in, sitting up on the bed with a shrug of his shoulders. “I’ve shared a bed with my brothers before. Granted, Dewey talks in his sleep and Louie likes to kick. But it’s worth not having to sleep on a couch that looks like it’s been pulled from the dump.”

“He’s not wrong?” Gyro spoke, the words coming out of his mouth before his brain could reel the letters back into shore.

Fenton stopped, looking at him with a soft expression on his face. “Y-you sure?” He asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Yeah, as the kids say, ‘ no big deal ’.” Gyro replied and Fenton nodded in agreement.

“No big deal.” He echoed.

The 4 were quick to prepare for bed, taking turns using the bathroom. The boys rushing to bed and talking in hushed whispers about their day.

Gyro was the last one out, Fenton perched at the edge watching the boys with a soft smile that did not send Gyro’s heart into overdrive.

“Alright boys.” Fenton spoke, and Gyro was glad that he took the lead. “Time for bed. Remember, we gotta meet up with Launchpad tomorrow afternoon if we wanna get back to Duckburg before morning.” The boys nodding their heads as they wrapped up their conversation.

Gyro approached him, rubbing at his arm, “You sure you’re okay with this?” He asked him again.

“Yeah, are you?” Fenton asked, almost afraid of what the answer would be.

“Yeah. It’s just for a night.”  Gyro nodded, almost forcing himself into agreeable that this would do nothing to the already bubbling emotions that seemed to drown him whenever he saw Fenton.

“Just for a night.” Fenton echoed back.

And if Gyro woke up in the middle of night with Fenton pressed close to him, he couldn’t help but think it was a dream. A very pleasant dream, he would decide, as he closed his eyes once more and pulled Fenton closer to himself. The smell of his shampoo was so vibrant and realistic that Gyro had no choice but to applaud his own imagination.

And if the boys woke up shortly afterwards to witness the scene, well, they definitely did not take pictures of them.

And when Fenton woke that morning, full of warmth and happiness, only to discover upon clearer observation that he was all but burrowed into Gyro.  And he wanted to cry, to bask longer in the waves of love that seemed to radiate from Gyro through some unforeseen force. Fenton had felt content for one singular moment in his life. It wasn’t often that one awoke in the arms of the person they dreamed about every night.
