Work Text:
Daichi was sitting at home, bored out of his mind, resembling a puppy who’s owner had just left for the day. Sugawara Koushi, his boyfriend, and his only source of reliable entertainment, had gone on a business trip a week ago and was supposed to be returning any minute. Key word: supposed. It was storming where he was, and his flight had been delayed multiple times. Even now, at 10 o’clock at night, Koushi hadn’t even boarded, and was cranky as all hell. It was only a two-hour flight, but they couldn’t risk taking off in the middle of a lightning storm. Daichi’s phone buzzed, and he picked it up immediately.
Finally, we’re boarding. It’s only been four hours. Daichi laughed, sensing the sarcasm in Suga’s text.
I can’t wait to see you! :)
I can’t wait to see you and go to bed.
Daichi figured that was the end of their conversation, so he put his phone down and inspected the apartment. It’s all clean, he thought. Do work. He opened up his computer to see a single work email he had yet to respond to, and seeing it was ten in the evening, he typed up a draft and saved it to send the next morning. Sighing and shutting off his computer, he stood up and began boiling water.
He looked regretfully at the cup of coffee he was about to drink. Daichi hated coffee and caffeine in general, but he had to stay awake to pick up Koushi from the airport. He downed the cup, and since he was home alone, made a few overly dramatic retching noises before brushing his teeth.
“Uelgh! How does Koushi drink this shit like it’s holy water?!” He exclaimed after coming out of the bathroom. Glooby, their goldfish, looked at him accusingly. Daichi rolled his eyes at the naggy aquatic species.
“I don’t like coffee, Glooby! Jeez! Sue me!”
Another pointed stare from the goldfish.
“Yes I know that those noises and brushing my teeth may have been a little excessive... Wait, I don’t even answer to you! You’re a fish! I feed you!”
Glooby swam towards the direction of the door, and then turned back to glare at Daichi.
“I know I know, this is why Koushi’s your favorite. I’m driving to pick him up in half an hour.”
Glooby’s stare did not waver.
“His flight got delayed! He’s going as fast as he can! You know what? I’m done talking to you.” The fish, who seemed appeased, went to chill in his little castle that had been bought at the pet store for him.
Daichi sighed and decided that he was not going to wait any longer. He grabbed his coat, brushed his teeth one more time, and set out to the airport.
This had turned out to be a good idea, since Daichi lost his way more than a few times trying to find Koushi’s gate. Fifteen minutes before Koushi was supposed to land, he had found his way, and sat down in one of the chairs. It was eleven at night, and he spotted some other poor souls meant to pick up their friends or family from the same flight. He made weary eye contact with them before deciding to just count the minutes until Koushi’s landing, and busy himself with a game of Candy Crush.
Finally, he saw the doors open up and people begin to flood out. Some had half-awake kids, some were still glued to their phones, and some were waving down their rides home. He scanned the crowd until he saw Koushi, wearing a coat and rubbing his eyes, which were also scanning. As soon as they found each other, they waved and hugged.
“Welcome home,” Daichi said, separating from him.
“Hi…” Koushi responded tiredly.
“Would you be interested in a ride home?” Daichi asked, extending his hand. Koushi cracked an exhausted smile and took it.
“That would be divine.”
They made their way to the car, and Daichi could not stop himself from talking. He was alone in the house all week, and he had missed the active, chattering boyfriend he had grown more than accustomed to. Once they were in the car, safe from anyone hearing his nonsense, he talked more.
“Oh boy, you should have seen Glooby the other day. I tried to feed him but he was NOT having it and he looked at me like-”
“Oh my god, Daichi. Please don’t tell me you’ve been talking to the fish,” Suga said, staring at him, unamused.
Daichi blinked. “Oh my god, he looked exactly like that! And-”
“Probably because you talk too much. Now turn on the heat.” Daichi nodded his head and raised one hand up in surrender before quieting down the rest of the ride home.
“You can tell me about it tomorrow when I’ve had a good night’s sleep in my own bed.”
When they finally got home, Koushi opened the door and stretched. “Oh my my, it’s so clean. You weren’t kidding about being bored.” Daichi smiled and put down Koushi’s suitcase. Koushi noticed the empty coffee mug sitting in the sink.
“Oh sorry, I forgot to wash that-” Daichi was met with a bright smile and a whack on the head.
“I can’t believe you drank coffee just for me! And no wonder you’re so talkative.”
“Aha well I guess that’s the reason,” Daichi said, rubbing his caffeinated head. “Well, I feel myself crashing now. Wanna go to sleep?”
Koushi groaned. “Do I ever.” Both of them headed to the bathroom to brush their teeth, and immediately went straight back to their bedroom. Peeling off his shirt, Koushi sighed. “That fucking flight took too long. I wanted to actually do something with you today.”
“I know,” Daichi agreed. “The fish was looking at me weird.”
“It’s a fish,” Koushi mumbled. “‘Course it’s gonna look at you weird.”
Daichi flopped down beside him. “Goodnight, Koushi. I love you.”
Koushi wrapped around his arm. “Night, Dai. Love ya too.” Koushi fell asleep in less than a minute, and Daichi followed soon after.
