I Don’t Want to Keep Secrets Just to Keep You

Summary:

William keeps asking Kara out, but little does he know that Kara is already in a relationship. He finds out the hard way.

Notes:

Title from Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift

Please take William’s attitude with a grain of salt. No means no. I just didn’t know how else to write the dude.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“No.”

Kara has said that word more than she would like to recently. It’s always ‘yes’ unless it’s something she really doesn’t want to do. In this  case, William is shooting his shot for what seems like the 4th time this week.

“Just one drink. Please?” William asks, sounding desperate yet again.

“I told you, I’m not going out with you.” Kara says as William trails behind her as they walk through Catco.

“There must be a good reason. I thought we were really getting to know each other!”

William doesn’t necessarily seem like a bad guy, but if he keeps it up she’s going to have to file a harassment report with HR.

“I do have a good reason,” but instead of taking the time to explain, she speeds up and leaves William in the dust.

Her reason being that she is not currently single.

Her girlfriend is currently laying in her bed, waiting for her to get home from work.

Her girlfriend, Lena.

Kara smiles to herself and blushes as she goes to sit down at her desk. Thinking about Lena just makes her feel like she’s floating. She would tell William that she’s taken, but doesn’t know if Lena wants to go public yet. They haven’t talked about it. Until then, Kara is keeping her mouth closed.

That is until she sees Lena walking up to her desk with a brown paper bag in hand.

“Lena! What are you doing here?”

Kara stays seated as lena comes around Kara’s desk to sit on the edge of it.

“I brought you some lunch and I wanted to come see you.” Lena reaches out to take Kara’s hand.

Kara glances behind Lena. She notices that William is watching them as he pretends to use the copy machine.

Kara let’s out a frustrated grown and let’s go of Lena’s hand.

“What’s wrong , baby?”

“William. He keeps asking me out and I don’t know how to get him to stop without telling him we’re together.”

“Okay,” Lena says smugly.

“Okay?”

“Okay, let’s tell him we’re together.”

“Are you sure?” Kara is actually feeling quite giddy now. As long as Lena as been her’s, she’s wanted to tell the whole world.

“I know we haven’t talked about it, but I’m okay with it if you are.” Lena takes Kara’s hand again and this time Kara doesn’t let go.

“I’m more than okay with that. It’s been really hard not getting to tell the first person I see that I am in love with Lena Luthor.” Kara jokes, but she’s almost sure that she would probably do just that.

“You’re adorable.”

Kara blushes and squeezes Lena’s hand and let’s go. She glances back over to William to see that he has finally decided to mind his own business and work at his desk.

“How do you want to tell him?” Kara asks.

“I was thinking that we could go public. If he’s going to know that I love you then so should everybody else.” Lena raises her eyebrows and hopes Kara approves of her suggestion.

“Are you sure?”

“Of course. We can get Catco to grab on to the story. He’ll have to see it. For now, I’m going to grab some paperwork from my office and wait for you at your apartment.”

Lena and Kara both stand to give each other a quick hug, careful not to draw attention in the workplace. Lena sneaks a quick kiss to Kara’s cheek which makes her giggle.

“See you later.” Lena flashes Kara one last smile and turns to leave.

Kara watches Lena go as she sits back down in her chair. Her smile is still plastered on her face, but starts to fade as she remembers she has to transcribe an interview before she can actually go home. She sighs and opens up the lunch Lena brought her. Inside, there’s a sandwich, pretzels, carrot sticks, and cookies . As Kara unwraps the sandwich, a little folded up note appears. Kara smiles and is careful to open the note.

Enjoy, my love. See you soon.

- L

Kara never thought she could fall in love with Lena all over again, but she has done so multiple times. Between making her lunch and writing her little notes, Kara could melt. She folds the note back up and sticks it in the edge of a frame that holds a picture of her and Lena.

After 3 more hours at work, Kara is finally able to step into her apartment and relax for the day. She hangs her jacket up and places her shoes next to the door. Before she walks in any further, she takes in her surroundings.

Kara notices Lena’s shoes that are now right next to hers and her coat is hanging on the rack too. Kara glances over at the coffee table to see all of the books that lena has left at her apartment over the last few months. Her eyes flicker over to the college sweatshirt that Lena let drape over the couch last night.

Kara sighs and leans against the door. She absolutely loved seeing Lena’s things spread out around her apartment. It felt right having Lena keep a few of her things there.

Snapping herself out of her daydream, Kara heads straight for her bedroom to see Lena sitting up with her legs crossed, dressed in one of Kara’s t-shirts. She’s focused on her laptop screen and whispering her thoughts to herself.

“Hey,” Kara says softly to get Lena’s attention.

Lena looks up from her work and matches Kara’s smile with her own.

“Hi, get changed and come lay with me,” Lena says as she finishes typing on her laptop. Before she can even lean back against the pillows, Kara has already used her super speed to change into sweats and a t-shirt.

Kara climbs on the bed and inches forward on her knees until she’s kneeling besides Lena.

“You look so good in my shirt.”

Kara grabs a fist full of It and pulls Lena towards her for a kiss.

“I know,” Lena says once she breaks the kiss, giving Kara another quick peck.

“I just made us dinner reservations tomorrow at Damon’s,” Lena continues.

“So what you’re saying is.. I get to kiss you in public?”

“I think that’s what it sounds like, yes.” Lena gives Kara a smug look and intertwines her fingers with Kara’s.

“I also called Nia. She’s going to break the story and you know, because she’s a junior reporter..” Lena stops so Kara will catch on.

“.. She has to give her articles to William so he can revise them. Rao, you’re brilliant.”

“Tell me something I don’t know.” Lena gets closer to Kara’s face, almost allowing their lips to touch.

“That would be impossible.” Kara only has to move an inch to close the gap between her and Lena’s lips.

“Luthor. Table for two.”

The hostess looks up from her seating chart to find thee Lena Luthor looking back at her. Lena  gives her a smile and waits for the hostess to regain her train of thought. Before doing so, she glances to the left of Lena and sure enough there’s Pulitzer Prize winning journalist,  Kara Danvers holding the CEO’s hand.

“Right this way ladies.” She clears her throat and doesn’t make eye contact with either of them as she passes to lead them to their table.

They stop at a booth not far from the front of the restaurant. They can be easily seen from the window as Lena and Kara intended.

“One of Catco’s photographers should be accompanying Nia,” Lena says and she slides in into the booth opposite of Kara.

Sure enough, a camera flashes from outside the restaurant. And then another. And another. It’s seems like Catco wasn’t the only news outlet to get the tip.

Without thinking, Kara reaches across the table to take Lena’s hand in her’s. Lena rests her free hand on tops of Kara’s. When their eyes meet, the cameras flash again.

Surely all the other news outlets will get their picture, but Catco will only be the only one getting their comments.

Eventually the photographers disperse. One photo is all they need for a gossip magazine.

This leaves Kara and Lena to have their dinner in peace or as much peace as they can get in a restaurant with curious eyes.

Just as dessert is served, Lena slips into Kara’s side of the booth so they can have a drink and watch the live band play a few songs.

Kara slings her arm around Lena’s waist and holds her close as they enjoy the rest of their evening.

Just as the last song ends, Kara turns her face towards Lena and whispers into her hair.

“Tomorrow is going to be a long day.”

She nuzzles her nose into Lena’s hair and kisses her head softly.

“Yeah, we’re going to need a good nights rest. My place or yours?” Her intentions are definitely not pure.

“Yours,” says Kara as she shuffles out of the booth after Lena.

Kara’s ride up the elevator to the Catco floor is nauseating. She’s slightly bouncing up and down with her arms wrapped around paper work in front of her chest. She can’t help but think that people have already seen the tabloids this morning. They have to be out already, but she didn’t dare look at a news stand to find out. Soon enough the real article will be released.

Kara takes a deep breath just before the doors open. She looks up from her feet to see a few of her coworkers looking at her for a little too long. They know. They have to. And that’s okay, Kara thinks. She has to remind herself that she and Lena talked about this. It’s completely fine. There’s only one person that she hopes to avoid.

Of course, that one person is making his way over to her right now.

“Hey, Kara, did you ever get the chance to reconsider going out for a drink?” William asks, still as hopeful as last time. At this rate, he has to be the only one who hasn’t seen a tabloid.

Kara rolls her eyes.

“I’m really busy today. I don’t have time for this right now.”

She sits down at her desk and sighs. There is no need to be worried. It does not matter what anyone else thinks. She is in love and doesn’t care who knows it.

“Hey, Kara. Do you want to read my article before I give it to William?”

Nia stands at the front of Kara’s desk with her draft in hand.

“I want to make sure that I got your history and your quotes right,” Nia continues.

“Of course, take a seat while I read.” Kara gives Nia a bright smile and takes the draft.

Exclusive: L-Corp CEO Lena Luthor and Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Kara Danvers were seen Thursday night looking closer than ever during a late dinner at one of National City’s most romantic date night destinations.

The pairs’ relationship began when Kara Danvers entered Lena Luthor’s office to ask a few questions about the CEO’s alien detection device. Ever since that first article was published, Luthor has been the subject of many of Danvers’ hit pieces.

A business relationship turned to friendship as they were seen together throughout the city. After Luthor purchased Catco Worldwide Media, the two became partners in their work. When I reached out to the pair, they were more than eager to confirm that they took their relationship to the next level.

“We’re together. I won’t go into detail, but somewhere along the way Kara became more than my best friend.”

Kara confirmed their relationship with a statement of her own.

“I’m pretty sure I fell for her the moment I walked in to her office the first time we met.”

What’s next for National City’s newest power couple? For now, that question remains unanswered. We are eager to learn what these two have in store for us.”

The article is accompanied by a sweet photo of Kara and Lena laughing and holding hands.

“Oh Nia, it’s perfect. Thank you so much.” Kara hands the draft back over to Nia

“It’s not problem at all. I would do anything for you two.” Nia stands up but leans in to whisper.  “I’m going to drop this off at Williams desk. Feel free to listen in. See you at game night!”

Kara smiles and Nia walks over to Williams desk across the Catco floor.

When Nia gets there, Kara begins to eavesdrop.

“William, I finished my celebrity piece.”

“Wonderful Nia, I’ll glance over it and send it through.”

Nia nods and glances back at Kara. Kara bites her lip and focus’s her eyes back on William just in time for him to look over the article.

Kara watches as his eyes flutter. She can hear his heart racing. He scratches the back of his head. If Kara could read minds she would probably hear him regret every time he’s asked her out.

William immediately gets up and take the article to publishing. He’s looks red in the face and walking a bit too fast.

Kara makes herself look busy as he heads in her direction.

When he’s directly in front of Kara’s desk, he clears his throat.

Kara looks up from her laptop that has not even been turned on yet.

“Uhh.” William clasps his hands together, trying to think about what he’s going to say next. “So I.. I’m sorry.”

Kara didn’t expect such an upfront apology.

“Oh it’s..” before Kara can get a word in, she here’s a very familiar voice speak up from behind him.

“Hello William.”

Lena walks up from behind William with another brown paper bag in her hands.

William only waves back, clearly still recovering from reading that article.

Kara sits back in her chair when lena comes around to sit on the edge as if William was never there.

“Hi darling,” she greets Kara with a smirk.

Lena traces Kara’s jaw line, giving her enough time to pull away before she rests her hand on her jaw.

Lena leans down to kiss her. Kara let’s her.

Kara is flustered when she pulls away, with her wide eyes looking up at Lena and then right back to William.

“You actually do have a good reason..” William looks up at Lena, who is still wearing her smirk, and back down to Kara who is nervously smiling at him.

“The best reason,” Kara says, looking back up at Lena.

Notes:

Not really sure how to write a magazine article so bear with me.
