Kacchan's Waking Nightmare

Summary:

Bakugou Katsuki wakes up one morning to find himself in a nightmare; Deku's dead, Katsuki had a mental breakdown, never went to hero school, and the blonde resides in a mental institute. Or does he? Is the mental asylum real, or has the past year of U.A. only been another mental episode? What is even real anymore?

This is a one-shot drabble so far.

Update on 08/22/2024: This is no longer a drabble. Currently working on a full series and plan to update soon.

Notes:

It's been a while, hasn't it? I've been working all this time, writing a novel, applying for jobs, and trying to stay sane in this insane world. How about you?

Anyway, this idea has been rattling in my mind for a while. I've been torn if there's much I can do with it beyond a short drabble, but before I dedicate much of my time to making an entire fanfic miniseries based around this concept, I wanted to know your thoughts. In the meantime, enjoy what I have so far!

Chapter 1: Drabble (Preview)

Chapter Text

Bakugou Katsuki was living a fucking nightmare.

He remembered the previous night as vividly as any other. Or did he? It was the end of the last week of the school year, Class 1-A finally finished their final exams, and Deku of all people somehow managed to pass alongside the blonde without messing up. They even went above and beyond to get near-perfect scores, but of course, the future No. 1 Hero outpaced All Might's successor by one perfect. Not a perfect 100%, but just enough of a margin to show his extra friends and classmates. Yet unsurprisingly, Deku took the loss in stride, smiling and congratulating Bakugou in a way that made the normally explosive student nod firmly back. Then, Kirishima and the rest of the so-called 'Bakusquad' heard about his achievement and went over the fucking Moon. They acted almost no different than the extras who sang praises about his Quirk back in elementary school and junior high, only this time, they literally dragged his ass from his dorm room to the private party the rest of Class 1-A was holding in the lounge room. Everybody was there, even Aizawa-sensei, who couldn't have acted any prouder in his own special way.

Bakugou tried recollecting each singular detail he could; Deku's (wholesome) laughter as somebody told a funny story, his bright green hair, his smile that could put any spotlight to shame, and his happy demeanor that always made Bakugou jealous annoyed. He tried remembering what Kirishima's shirt looked like with spilled cheese on it and what music Raccoon Eyes danced to. How much Tape Face and Dunce Face made fools of themselves, trying to flirt with the girls. Round Cheeks' proud grin as she described surviving her exam. The Pervert being put in his place by Icy Hot, who occasionally glanced at him across the room, but more out of respect than hostility. Bakugou remembered giving a firm nod as well, especially after having learned about the half-and-half bastard's bastard of a father. Never before had he wanted to punch somebody before. Katsuki tried remembering more from that night; listening to rocking songs provided by Ears and Ponytail's expensive surround system. Laughter at an hilarious anecdote that made him laugh, much to the extras' surprise. The number of times Glasses chopped the air as he lectured a classmate on what they could/couldn't do during the party, all while Aizawa-sensei napped in his sleeping bag nearby. Which food he ate, how much fruit punch he drank, the moments leading to him wandering upstairs...or did he go outside?

However the night ended, Bakugou Katsuki expected nothing for the weekend. He certainly didn't expect to wake up early in the morning, dressed in dull gray clothing, in a dull gray room, with a springy bed, few of his belongings, none of his school notebooks, let alone the uniform he crudely wore.

No, he did not wake up in the Heights Alliance dorm room. It was a plain room, in Mustafu's resident asylum. The local mental institution. He recognized the shirt's logo from somewhere, at the back of his mind.

Safe to say, Bakugou was fucking pissed and several variations of confused. When he tried using his Quirk on the locked door, the blonde was shocked when the expected explosion never came. Then, he finally discovered the Quirk-suppressing collar on his left ankle. Minutes of angry shouting and pounding on the walls later led to two orderlies bursting in the room. They held him down as a nurse injected him with something forcing him back to sleep.

He woke up later, strapped to his bed. "It's for your own safety, Mr. Bakugou. You've unfortunately had another mental episode, it seems..." the psychiatrist muttered in resigned disappointment. "You were making so much progress until now."

"Fucking progress on what, exactly?" he snarled at the doctor. "I'm a U.A. student, goddammit! How did I fucking wake up here?!"

"Mr. Bakugou, as we've stated before," Dr. Somu, according to his nametag, told him, "you're not a student a U.A. High School. You've never had the opportunity to become one, not since your...your mental breakdown two years ago."

Katsuki glared with a raised eyebrow. "Mental breakdown? What the fuck are you talking about?"

"I'd normally tell you to keep watching that tone, but that's not important at the moment..." Dr. Somu sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose and exhaling as he looked back up to the blonde teenager with saddened eyes behind his glasses. "Katsuki, you need to remember what happened wasn't your fault. After the police told you about what happened, you suffered from a sudden case of psychosis, and the loss of your Quirkless friend caused you to create delusions that forced your parents to send you here, to this facility."

Bakugou heard a pin drop somewhere in the back of his mind. He warily asked, "What do you mean 'the loss of my Quirkless friend'?"

Dr. Somu sighed deeper. "I mean, after the sudden death of your childhood friend, Midoriya Izuku. Poor boy. Your guilt and shock over his apparent suicide triggered a mental illness, which is why you are here, in our care. However, we still have hope for you yet, Mr. Bakugou. There's still hope for you to recover..."

It was official; Katsuki had woken up in Hell.
