Work Text:
"You've been using an awful lot of personal time lately," Bailey said, startling Arizona as she updated a patient's chart on a hallway computer.
"Oh, Bailey! Hi! I didn't see you there." Arizona turned so they were face to face. "Yeah, I guess I have. Is that a problem?"
"No. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing I should be concerned about," Bailey said, pulling something up on her tablet. "Nothing in your personal life, I mean."
"Nope," Arizona smiled. "Everything is super. Just spending more time with Sofia. Sometimes I feel like I take her and her choice to be living here, with me, for granted. That's all."
"Mmhmm. I just find this strange. Usually I have to shove you out of the hospital in order for you to take a sick day. Now you're taking personal days. You never took time off before." Bailey raised an eyebrow.
"Well, I'm not sick. Just spending time with my daughter." Arizona was anxious for this conversation to end. It seemed like an inquisition.
"Well, you started taking Wednesday afternoons off about two months ago," Bailey said, tilting the tablet toward Arizona, displaying a spreadsheet of what appeared to be employee hours.
"I didn't know you were keeping such close tabs on my attendance," Arizona said.
"No, it's just a tool. To keep me in the loop. So, Grey tells me that Sofia and Zola get out of school at noon on Wednesdays."
"Yep," Arizona nodded, being polite despite the fact that she felt exposed. "They do. And I usually pick Sofia or the both of them up, and we do something, like get our nails done or go to the movies."
"Well, that's all well and good, but, you see," Bailey scrolled down the spreadsheet, "then you started taking Mondays and Fridays off, like this past Monday. Only, I know for a fact that Sofia was staying at Grey's house this past weekend, so you weren't with her on Monday."
Arizona took a deep breath and smiled. "Bailey, is there any issue with my work? Any complaints from patients?"
"Nope." Bailey set her tablet down on the nurses station. "None at all."
"And I thought we agreed that, as head of the department, I can do a portion of my paperwork from home and have more flexible hours."
"Yes, we did."
"So why all the questions, Bailey?" Arizona set a hand on her hip, feeling a sense of relief when Bailey's pager began to sound. "It looks like you're needed, and I'm needed for surgery. It was super catching up," and with that, Arizona made her way towards the elevator.
She pulled out her phone and typed a message.
Bailey's onto us. Don't wait for me at the hospital. I'll pick you up at home and we'll go to the airport from there. And don't act suspicious in your interview!
"Robbins! I haven't seen you for a while," Richard said, grabbing a tray as they waited in the cafeteria line.
"I know! I've just been so busy, and I'm sure it's the same for you and Catherine." Arizona smiled, handing the woman at the register some money for her lasagna and salad.
Richard nodded. "Of course. When aren't we busy?" He scooped some tuna fish onto a plate, and set some money down on the counter, following Arizona to an empty table. "But I was surprised you didn't come to Catherine and my Easter brunch."
"Well, I appreciate the invitation, but I was visiting my parents with Sofia." Arizona smiled tightly.
"Oh, where do they live?" Richard arranged his tuna onto some bread, carefully cutting his sandwich down the middle.
"Maryland."
"Oh, that's strange, I could have sworn your name was on the OR board when I came into the hospital to check on a patient that evening."
Arizona shrugged. "It must have been a mistake. I wasn't here."
"And didn't you say that Sofia was going to spend Easter with Torres? And go to Mass?"
"Oh," Arizona said, awkwardly pushing her food around her paper plate. "Callie was with us. In Maryland."
"With her ex-in-laws? That must have been rather uncomfortable."
"Nope, we're all making it work. For Sofia, of course." Arizona smiled.
Webber smiled. "Of course."
Arizona nodded, pulling out her phone to type a message.
Missing you already. How was your flight? If anyone asks, you spent Easter in Maryland, and you went to Mass there. You were never in Seattle.
"Hey, do you want me to come over after work?" Carina whispered in Arizona's ear seductively. They were doing research on their project in the lab, and it was getting late.
"Oh, I can't. I'm sorry," Arizona said, scooting away as much as she could manage while remaining in her chair. "I have Sofia tonight."
"I thought you said she's with her other mom, no?" Carina asked.
"Oh, um, she is. She's coming home though. Late. Her flight gets in tonight, and, um, it gets in late," Arizona awkwardly managed.
"I can be – what do you call it? – intelligent with my time."
"You can use your time wisely?" Arizona suggested.
"Yes. Perfetto, si?"
"Si– I mean, no. Not perfetto. I have stuff to do for Sofia. I have to go wash sheets and clean ...stuff." Arizona smiled apologetically.
Carina finally took the hint. "Ah. Rain control, then?"
Arizona furrowed her brow. "Rain control?"
"You know, controllo della pioggia. When you reschedule something for when it isn't raining, but speak, um, figuratively."
Arizona smiled. "Rain check?"
"Si," Carina reached out for Arizona's hand. "I'd very much like your rain check."
Arizona didn't think her clarification would be interpreted as an offer, but before she could tell Carina there wouldn't be a rain check, Carina had already opened the journal and resumed their research. It'd become a moot point.
Once Arizona got into her Volvo, she sighed, leaning against the headrest. She felt guilty and gross. She needed to come clean.
I may have inadvertently, accidentally lead DeLuca's sister to the idea that we may have sex at some indeterminate time in the future. She asked me to see her tonight, and I said no, of course, but then she asked me for a rain control, so I suggested she meant rain check, but she interpreted that as me offering her one. But I didn't mean it like that at all. I just was wondering if that was the term she was looking for. I just feel disgusting. I'm so, so sorry. I'd never do that to you. Not again, anyway. I love you.
"Ah, so, there's the tumor?" Arizona asked, pointing at a pregnant woman's brain scan.
"Yes," Amelia said, a wicked smile forming on her face. "What's that?"
Arizona turned around. "What's what?"
"What's that? On your finger?" Amelia probed. "You saw that, too, guys, right?" She nodded towards Karev and DeLuca.
"I mean, it was all shiny under the backlit scans," Karev shrugged.
Arizona blushed, but before she could take the shiny item in question off, Amelia grabbed her left arm, finding a ring adorning her left ring finger.
"What is this, Arizona?" Amelia asked teasingly.
"It's a ring," Arizona said, as if it were obvious.
"It looks like a wedding ring," DeLuca said, worry becoming evident in his voice. "Did you and my sister–"
"I don't think so." Amelia said, examining it. "This is Callie's ring, isn't it?"
"No, it's not." Arizona said, but those words died on her lips, because Amelia tugged the band off of her finger, examining the diamonds along the outside before turning to the inscription on the inside
"With you, I'm complete," Amelia read.
"Those are very generic wedding vows," Arizona claimed. "It's–it's a family heirloom."
"If I recall correctly, Torres said that in her vows," Karev commented, smirking.
"Oh," Amelia said, laughing to herself. "So, you've finally made things right and now order has been restored to the universe?"
"What?" Arizona took the ring back abruptly. "No, I just wanted to wear my ring for old time's sake. I'm feeling nostalgic. That's all." She left the room and began walking down the hall, but Amelia followed her, quickly catching up.
"I'm not buying that," Amelia said.
"Calliope is in New York, with Penny, and they're happy–"
"Don't give me that. We all knew she and Penny weren't going to last."
Arizona turned on her heels to face Amelia. "We all did?"
"Well, everyone but you. But you love her. You've always loved her. So you weren't in a place to be objective." Amelia tilted her head, pulling Arizona into the attendings' lounge. "What's going on, Robbins? You've been acting strange. Look, I know we're not all that close, but everyone can tell something's up with you. And usually we'd ask Kepner what's going on, but she's not really… well, she's not really being Kepner at the moment."
Arizona smiled tightly. "Yeah. I'm worried about her."
"We all are," Amelia said, "but stop trying to change the subject."
"Look, I don't mean to be all secretive and standoffish. It's just– Look, you're right, Calliope and I are trying again. It's just, the hospital rumor mill has not been very kind to my relationships in the past. And I really want to make it work this time."
Amelia smiled wickedly. "I always liked you and Torres together."
Arizona blushed. "Could we keep this between us for a while? Calliope is moving back here in eight weeks, when her contract is up, and then everyone's going to know. Until then, I just want to keep Calliope to myself. We're in our pretty, pink bubble, and I'm not ready to pop it yet."
"Can do," Amelia said, smiling. She hadn't seen Arizona this happy in a while. Her face still lit up every time she mentioned Callie. "Just answer me this. Are you guys engaged? Because that looks like a wedding band to me."
Arizona looked at her sneakers, a blush rising from her chest, trying to contain her smile. "I do have an engagement ring," Arizona said, tugging at the gold chain around her neck, revealing it from beneath her scrub top. Laying beside the heart pendant that came with the chain, a gift that feels a lifetime old, sat a stunning diamond engagement ring. "So, um, we actually got married. And legally this time. It was a sort of spur of the moment thing when I was in New York this past weekend. She proposed on Saturday night, and we got married at the courthouse on Monday morning, before I flew home. And I remembered to take one ring off today, but not the other."
"Damn, Torres has good taste in rings," Amelia laughed. "Oh, and then you came over and picked Sof up from Mer's. I remember. I can't believe you had just gotten married! I'd have opened some champagne. For you, of course. Not for me or for the kids." Amelia's pager started sounding, and she examined it. "Gotta dash. But, congratulations, Robbins," she said, patting Arizona on the shoulder on her way out the door.
Arizona smiled after Amelia, pulling out her phone.
I think I reined in the rumor. We should be good for now. Love you.
A reply came in almost instantly.
Love you, too, Mrs. Robbins-Torres.
"You guys paged me?" Amelia asked, walking back into the neuro scan room, finding Karev and DeLuca where she'd left them.
"Yeah," Alex said. "So, what did Robbins say?"
"She and Torres are back together. And get this – they're married again." Amelia said.
"Yes! I've got to go tell Webber. I think I won the bet." Karev was smug.
"And I'm out a hundred bucks," DeLuca grumbled.
