Work Text:
"I may have paged pediatrics, but I wanted a doctor, not a kid from the station!" the doctor snapped at you, a little annoyed.
"Dr. (Y/N) (Y/L/N), I'm a doctor," you said a little bored. After all, it wasn't the first time you had been treated like this.
Sure, you were young and it didn't really help that you looked a lot younger.
Nevertheless, you had the same path behind you as all the other doctors, so a little respect would not be out of place.
But the more it happened, the more you got used to it.
"Sure, and I'm actually the Easter Bunny, but let's not tell anyone." he winked at you and looked to his assistant "page Dr. Hayes." he requested before running down the hallway to the ER.
"Dr. Hayes is with his children and I'm on duty and I'd advise you to stand down once we get to our patient because the last thing I need is parents wanting another doctor just because some old man told them I'm too young," you said in a serious voice before walking past him.
Schmitt, who had followed the whole thing with wide eyes, ran after you with hurried steps.
"Good afternoon, I am Dr. (Y/L/N)." you quickly introduced yourself to the patient and the father.
"You're the new doctor?" came a surprising reply from the father, before he also looked at the doctor, who was now coming up behind you.
"Yes," he said curtly before looking to the boy.
"Tom Koracick." he introduced himself briefly.
"What happened?" he now asked the father as you carefully began to examine the boy.
"Austin started seizing, he hasn't been feeling well for a few days so I took a few days off," he explained before looking to you.
"Dr. Cormac Hayes." he introduced himself calmly.
"Interesting way to meet the new boss ." You said with a small laugh, hoping to ease the situation a little.
"You really hired her?" asked Koracick as he now began to examine the boy himself.
"Well, Webber and Bailey," he explained curtly.
"Didn't they look at the date of birth?" asked Koracick, slightly irritated.
You rolled your eyes in annoyance, but before you could really join in the conversation, the boy began to convulse again, his eyes turned white and his pulse and blood pressure rose dangerously high.
Dr. Koracick and you exchanged a quick glance before you started to treat Austin and took him to the operating theatre shortly afterward.
You knew this was a dangerous operation and you were only too aware that Dr. Hayes was going through hell.
You quietly gave Schmitt an order before getting ready for the operation.
Dr. Hayes was sitting in the waiting room, his mobile phone in his hand, the same phone he had been using a few minutes ago. He had informed his family and was now staring at the floor.
His legs were bobbing up and down and his thoughts would not let him rest.
Schmitt texted him over and over again about how the surgery was going, what step they were at and what his son's stats were, but still, he couldn't find any peace.
He wanted to throw something when a little girl stood in front of him.
She had blonde, almost white hair that fell in waves over her shoulders.
Her eyes were green and glassy.
"Can you help me?" she asked quietly, tilting her head slightly to look at Hayes.
"How can I help you?" he asked now in a calm voice, careful not to scare the little one.
"I'm looking for my mommy," she said now through tears.
Carefully he put a hand on her shoulder.
"Where did you see her last?" he inquired.
"Back there," she murmured softly before pulling on his hand to show him the spot.
Dr. Hayes knew he should have the mother paged, but every time he tried to talk to a nurse she started crying again, so he hoped that maybe the mother would call and he could then hand the little one over downstairs in the waiting area.
In the meantime he had her in his arms and walked with her through all the wards, he had started telling her stories to calm her down a bit.
His thoughts kept slipping back to his son, but he had to concentrate on the little one now because at least he could help here.
At some point, he had found out that the little girl's name was Tony short for Antonia and that she will be five in a few months.
He was about to ask more questions when he received a message from Schmitt.
Hayes had briefly thought about leaving the little one with a nurse, but then she would surely just cry again, so he took her with him.
"He passed the operation with flying colors," Koracick explained, before looking somewhat skeptically at the child in his arms.
"I thought you had two sons?" he huffed.
"The little one is looking for her mother, kept me pretty busy while I was almost freaking out," Hayes explained with relief when he saw his son and his son's stats.
"You've been walking around the hospital with the little one all this time?" asked Koracick, irritated.
"Every time I've gone to call a nurse to make an announcement she's been crying really bad, so I thought I'd wait for an announcement from her mother and walk around the hospital hoping to find her."
Koracick just nodded the whole thing off and before looking to you "She did well by the way for just being a kid."
"So that's the sound of compliments from men who are actually already seemingly dead." you returned just as bitingly, smiling slightly.
If he was going to go down that road, you weren't going to stop him.
"If you want, we can find her mother and you can stay with your son." Koracick offered without taking you up on your words.
Before Hayes could accept the offer, you took the little one from him. "There's no need," you explained curtly.
The two stared at you in confusion.
"Oh the little one belongs to me, I'm her mother." with these words you and Schmitt disappeared from the room.
"Thank you for your help my sweetie." you thanked your daughter before giving her a kiss on the forehead.
"And also a big thank you to you for getting her and telling her about the plan."
"Do I get a kiss on the forehead too?" Schmitt asked amused.
"You always do." you pressed a kiss to your best friend's forehead, laughing.
"Dr. (Y/L/N)." surprised, you turned around.
"Is everything alright?" you echoed in surprise when you saw Dr Hayes.
"Yes, everything's fine, he's starting to wake up. I wanted to thank you, not only for saving my son's life but for sending your daughter after me."
"I know how I'd freak out if my little ones had to have surgery. I thought a distraction couldn't hurt."
"You were more than right about that... my little ones? You have several children?" came his surprise, noticing how his question sounded. "I didn't mean that in a mean way or anything, I'm just surprised, they look so young," he explained himself.
"It's okay, I have two kids, the other one is just a year old," you explained smiling.
"Then your husband or wife must support you well right? I mean medical school and kids, if I had my boys at the time, I wouldn't have made it," he explained sheepishly.
"I'm single and neither husband nor wife for the last few years," you said laughing, especially liking his confusion.
"Do you have superpowers?" he now inquired with a laugh.
"I'm afraid not," you replied laughing.
"One of these days you really must tell me how you managed to juggle two children, studies, work and everything else. Maybe over dinner?" he asked cautiously.
"If Schmitt agrees to watch the girls, I'd love to."
