Work Text:
Kageyama welcomes the cool breeze that grazes his flushed cheeks and sighs. He’s been running for quite some time now, trying to desperately clear his racing mind and he’s only now just considered stopping.
He wants to scream.
He’s feeling like a complete idiot—an utter fool, and coward at that given the fact that he’s currently running away from his problems, as one should.
Because he seemed to have stopped at the nearest neighborhood park, Kageyama doesn’t scream and instead kicks some gravel across from him. He slumps over one of the empty park swings and bangs his head against the iron holders.
It’s been a long and exhausting day, all Kageyama wants to do is go home—but he can’t, because Hinata’s home, and he can’t bear to face him after the coffee shop fiasco a few hours prior.
If only Yamaguchi had stopped him from making a fool of himself sooner, then maybe, just maybe, Hinata wouldn't have found out about Kageyama’s enormous crush on him. It would have surely saved him the worry and stress of having to find a new place to stay in.
Perhaps he could cajole Tsukishima and Yamaguchi to lend him their couch for a few weeks.
Kageyama groans in frustration and lets his head fall back. Staring up at the twinkling stars, he wishes he could somehow launch himself into outer space as long as he didn’t have to deal with his life at this very moment.
“Idiot—you’re a complete idiot Tobio Kageyama”
He digs his feet into the gravel, and wonders if Hinata is already asleep. Maybe he can sneak into their apartment as quietly as possible, and set an alarm for like five a.m. Maybe he can avoid Hinata for the rest of their lives. If he finds the correct pattern—
Impossible.
Hinata is a morning person, highly unpredictable and prone to wake up at even four a.m. He adores waking up at ass o’ crack in the morning, and Kageyama would rather not risk running into him this way.
The idea is absurd anyways.
Tsukishima and Yamaguchi’s creaky, old and lumpy couch will have to do for the next few days. It’s either that or he moves to China or something.
“Fucking finally!” comes a loud screech that startles Kageyama out of his thoughts and he nearly topples off the swing in a mess of limbs. “Where the hell have you been?” Hinata screams, doubling over to pant excessively, staring back at him wide eyed and frazzled.
“I uh, well, you know—around?”
Kageyama shrugs a bit and scratches the back of his neck.
“Why would you run off like that? You’ve had me worried sick, and! You weren’t answering any of my calls—or anyone’s for that matter!” Hinata accuses, hands going on either side of his hips, still struggling to catch his breath.
“Could be bad phone service, who knows?”
“Tobio, you can’t—you can’t just run off like that and not tell anyone” Hinata says desperately, he takes a step closer to him and Kageyama in turn takes one step back. Hinata gives him a hurt look, and Kageyama feels the ugly claws of guilt claw at his chest.
“So I had a sudden urge to go for a run”
“Back at Tsukki’s coffee shop—” Hinata swallows, “did you...did you mean what you had said?” he asks, letting his hands fall limp on his sides.
“What does it matter, Sho? You’ve got that cute girl from your advanced physics class that confessed to you, you said you liked her, and I—well I’m trying to deal with things and get over certain feelings I feel” Kageyama says, cringing at how inarticulate he sounds. Why are words and sentences so hard to form around Hinata nowadays?
“Please—please don’t do that YamaYama” Hinata pleads walking closer and taking Kageyama’s hands in his. He gets on the tips of his toes and noses at Kageyama’s chin, hugging him around his torso. “I uh, well—I actually...I actually really, really like you Kageyama” he mumbles, pressing his face into Kageyama’s chest.
“I thought you liked—”
“I made her up” Hinata sighs, “I wanted to see if I could make you jealous”
“Hinata, what the fuck, you asshole!” Kageyama exclaims, pinching Hinata’s sides.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I was running out of ideas—it’s not like you showed any signs of caring anyways” Hinata tells him, hugging him tighter.
:Why didn’t you just say something?”
“Well why didn’t you?” Hinata retorts, pulling back to look at him.
“You’re my best friend, Sho, I didn’t want to ruin anything between us with what I thought were unrequited feelings. Who would make me pancakes with strawberry smiley faces in the mornings if you suddenly realized it was awkward being around me and my feelings? ” Kageyama laughed.
“You’re an idiot, YamaYama” Hinata drawls and Kageyama grins.
“I’m going to kiss you now” he whispers inching closer. Hinata’s eyes fall close, and Kageyama presses his slightly dry lips to Hinata’s own soft and plump ones. They both smile into the kiss, Hinata pressing closer, coaxing Kageyama’s lips open. They both moan at the first graze of their tongues, and Kageyama thinks he could literally do this for the rest of his life.
“If you ever—and I mean ever, run off like that without letting anyone know about your whereabouts—you’re in deep, deep shit Tobio Kageyama”
“Yeah, yeah” he grumbles, pulling Hinata in for a deeper, much lewder kiss this time.
