"Ya know, you really shouldn't do that in bed." Alex turned to the bedside table and snorted the thin line of coke he had cut up on an old Metallica CD through a rolled up £20 note.
Miles laughed and flicked the ashes from the end of his cigarette onto the hardwood floor. "That's rich comin' from you, love. I reckon we all have our little vices, but we all need somethin' t' help get us through the day."
"Yeah, yeah, I s'pose you're right. Wow." Alex sniffed as the coke made its way into his bloodstream. Miles watched as Alex's pupils gradually dilated, taking over his soulful brown irises completely until his eyes looked like two bottomless black holes.
"That'll never get old," Alex declared, pressing his lips to Miles's cheek with a wet smack. "It's such a rush, so excitin', like. Like -"
"Like you could take on the world, beat Noel Gallagher's arse in a fistfight, take over the seat of government in a peaceful coup, and be Britain's benevolent dictator PM. I know it, Al, you've said as much before."
He took another drag on his cigarette and passed it over to Alex, whose face twisted in disgust as he held the cylinder reluctantly between his thumb and forefinger. "Whatcha want me t' do wi' this?"
"Take a puff for yourself, or just put the bloody thing out. I've found it's not doin' me much good. Just snuff it out on top o' that old CD case, there's a good lad."
Alex's face fell. "But Mi, I can't do that! That's the copy of Load me dad bought me for me eleventh birthday. It's special and got sentimental value, like."
Miles sighed and rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I mean, just 'cause you used it to snort a line of coke off of, that doesn't make it any less valuable to ya. What the hell, Alex. Fine, gimme it."
Alex's eyes widened. He sniffled, and Miles knew he was about to cry. A few tears seeped out of the corners of his eyes and trickled down his cheeks.
"No. I'll put it out. You're right, it's downright stupid o' me to hold onto summat for sentimental reasons. Bullshit. I never liked Metallica, anyway."
He mashed the filter on top of the plastic case, stubbing it out. He pressed so hard on the case that he cracked it. Miles gasped, but Alex just shrugged and looked bored. He opened the case, took out the CD, and crushed it to pieces. He hissed when one of the small polycarbonate plastic shards sliced into the skin of his pointer finger.
"Alex! Good grief, that's enough." Miles took Alex's finger and licked the tiny beads of blood. "Stay 'ere with me. Your high's gunna wear off soon enough, and then you'll crash pretty 'ard. I don't want ya doin' this shite without me 'ere with ya, got it? Al, d'ya hear me? Well?"
When he didn't answer, Miles looked over and saw that Alex had fallen asleep.
