Work Text:

It’s a little hard to pinpoint when exactly it happened, but sometime within the last eight months of sharing a living space with Tobio, Shoyo had found himself a cozy little morning routine.

He’d wake up first at half past six, take a quick shower in their shared bathroom. Every time without fail, the minute he’d come out, the rich smell of coffee would envelop his senses. That meant that Kageyama was up and fixing them a bit of breakfast before they’d each have to quickly run off to their corresponding classes.

It was nice, and Shoyo really appreciated it.

However, this morning when he woke and exited the shower, there weren’t any sounds coming from the kitcher nor were there any lovely and yummy smells accompanying said sounds. Shoyo noted that it was weirdly silent, more silent than Shoyo was ever used to.

He’d still gone back to his room to change into his outfit of the day, and waited to see if Kageyama would emerge from his room soon.

He didn’t, and Hinata worried.

At first he figured maybe Tobio had woken up early and gone on to class without sparing him a word due to their argument from the previous night. Shoyo bit his lip nervously and sighed  thinking back to last night’s events.

Maybe Shoyo had overstepped, but he figured the two of them were friends, and he was worried about Tobio’s inability to look after himself as well as his slightly reckless behavior. He had to let him know. Tobio had been slightly blindsided by Shoyo’s sudden fierce scolding and had immediately switched into defensive mode.

Hurtful words were said, and neither had said goodnight to one another, opting to skip dinner —which Shoyo often cooked since Tobio always took care of breakfast.

Shoyo sighed.

Perhaps he really should've just kept quiet. He hated arguing with Tobio, it was quite too reminiscent of their first few weeks as roommates. It wasn’t a fun time, and it had only served to stress Shoyo out to the point of crying.

He took a look at the time, and groaned, if he didn’t leave within the next ten minutes, he would surely be late to class. Mrs. Yamamoto was unforgiving to late students and Hinata wasn’t in the mood to get locked out of class.

He made his way towards the front of their apartment to grab his bag and shoes, but noticed that Kageyama’s own bag and shoes were still there. So he was still in his room. Shoyo frowned, no stranger to Tobio’s petty antics, and turned back to walk towards Tobio’s room.

He knocks once, twice, softly as to not upset his roommate, and waits.

“Kags” he says, voice barely above a whisper. “Kageyama, please quit being this way. Look, I’m sorry if I overstepped last night, I won’t bring it up again. You’re going to be late for practice. You know what coach does to those that are late to practice”

There’s no response and Hinata frowns.

Against his better judgement, he throws Kageyama’s bedroom door open and stomps into the room ready to give him a piece of his mind. He stops in his tracks when he catches sight of Kageyama still in bed. He’s burrowed deeply into his sheets, and his breathing seems a little ragged.

Shoyo hastily runs to Tobio’s side, pulling the sheets off of him a little to have a better look at his friend. He gasps when he sees how sweaty and pale Tobio looks, bangs matted to his forehead. Hinata reaches to touch his forehead with the back of his hand, cursing when he’s met with the burning temperature of Kageyama’s skin.

“Damnit Kageyama, I told you to have a warm bath before bed. You just can’t ever fucking listen, can you” Hinata growls.

Tobio in turn struggles to open his eyes in order to glare at his annoyingly loud roommate. He tries to fight Hinata’s wandering hands in order to pull his covers back up, but he has little to no energy in him. His weak attempts to swat Hinata away fail, and his hands fall limp on his bed.

“Leave me alone” Tobio whines, screwing his eyes shut in a weak attempt to stop the room from spinning.

“Like hell I will! If you won’t take care of yourself, I will” Hinata tells him with a tone that leaves no room for arguing. Kageyama wants to be mad, he really does, but in the very back of his mind he thinks it’s kind of nice to have someone care about you this much.

How annoying, Kageyama thinks albeit fondly.

“This isn’t the time to be stubborn Kags, come on, help me out here. We need to get you into the shower” Hinata heaves, trying to get Kageyama to sit up. “Think you can take a quick hot shower without passing out in there?” Hinata asks, crouching between Kageyama’s legs and looking up at him with genuine concern.

It makes Kageyama’s body feel warmer than it already is, and he can feel the prickling sting of his blushing ears.

“I think so,” he mumbles, looking away.

“Kay’ big guy, then up we go” Shoyo takes one of Tobio’s hands in his and helps him rise from the bed. “You go shower, and I’ll take care of this, okay?” Hinata says and nudges him towards their bathroom.

Kageyama, for once in his life, listens to Hinata’s instructions, and makes his way towards their restroom.

Cracking his neck, Hinata huffs a determined breath and gets down to business. By the time Kageyama has emerged from the bathroom, Hinata has switched out his bedsheets and started on a bit of chicken noodle soup.

“Hey, so give me a few minutes and—”

“And what?” Kageyama asks, drying his hair with a towel. He’s not gone back to slip into regular clothes and his muscular body is full on display, water droplets clinging onto the divots of his muscles.

“I uh—right, uh, I’m making you some soup. Should help a bit, and you can take some cough medicine afterwards alright” Hinata says, avoiding his gaze.

“Sure, thanks” Kageyama tells him.

“Go put on some warm clothes, being half naked isn’t going to help your cause!” Hinata exclaims, a blush high on his cheeks. Thankfully, Kageyama once again decides to listen to him and heads back to his room to change.

It’s only a few minutes later that Hinata makes his way back into Kageyama’s room with a tray of warm chicken noodle soup, with some fresh cut up fruit along with a glass of orange juice. (Hinata googled what type of juice would be best to serve someone with a cold, turns out orange juice works just fine.)

Setting the tray next to Kageyama’s bedside table, Hinata shakes him awake once again. Kageyama groans, and blinks his eyes open.

“I know, I’m sorry, I promise to let you rest as soon as you eat something and take this medicine” Hinata assures him. With minimal grumbling, Kageyama sits up in his bed and let’s Hinata place the eating tray on his lap. “Would you like me to feed you?” Hinata asks, and for a second Kageyama thinks he’s fucking around with him, but when he turns to look at him, Hinata looks back at him with genuine care all over his face.

Kageyama blushes a bit, thankful his face is already slightly flushed due to his fever and shakes his head.

“Alright, I have to go clean up in the kitchen. I’ll be back to check on you in a bit. Eat everything in that bowl and please for the love of God, drink up the medicine”

Hinata slinks back out of Kageyama’s room and a warmth that has nothing to do with his sudden cold spreads through Tobio’s chest. He happily drinks up his soup, and obediently takes the medicine and fever reducers Hinata placed on his bedside table.

“Alright, good boy” Hinata teases and Kageyama, who is feeling way better than he was feeling an hour ago throws a pillow in his direction. “Rest up, and feel better, okay?”. Kageyama nods, and slides back under his covers. “You yell out for me if you need anything, alright?” Hinata tells him.

“Hey, I uh, well—thanks, Sho. Sorry for causing you so much trouble today” Kageyama mumbles before Hinata makes it all the way out of his bedroom. “And sorry about yesterday, I—it’s been a while since anyone’s shown me genuine care. I was out of line for the things I said last night. I really do appreciate you looking out for me. I promise to try and do better”

“That’s all I ask for,” Hinata laughs softly. “You know, back at home—when I was younger—anytime I’d get sick or catch a cold, mom would jump in bed with me and cuddle me until I fell asleep, '' Hinata tells him, walking back to his side. “Does YamaYama want some healing cuddles?”

Kageyama hesitates, not knowing if Hinata is fully serious or not. Before he even gets the chance to say yes or no, Hinata is lifting up the covers and sliding in next to him.

“I—”

“Shhh” Hinata shushes him, manhandling him in a way he didn’t think Hinata would ever be able to, given that he is slightly smaller and less built than Kageyama himself. He places his arms around Kageyama and surprises him with a light kiss to his forehead. Kageyama’s last thoughts before giving in to sleep is that he’s quite lucky to have met Hinata Shoyo.
