Chapter Text
Izuku has always thought of midnight as a special time.
His first kiss was at midnight on new Year of his second year at UA. His husband proposed at midnight on their anniversary four years later. They moved into their house together at midnight on Izuku’s birthday.
But there was nothing substantial about a random midnight in the middle of February.
There was a knock at the door.
Izuku was already awake since a villain attack the day before had left him with a mountain of paperwork. Shouto had scolded him for being so reckless, but in the end he’d completed the job and no lives were lost.
He stood from his office chair and stretched, groaning as his back cracked ominously.
Okay, maybe he had been a little reckless.
He glances at the clock just to check. Four zeroes stare back.
He watches the last turn to a one before sighing and walking towards the hall. Shouto is slipping on sweatpants when he gets to the juncture between the kitchen and their front entrance. He must’ve been grabbing a midnight snack judging by the open peanut butter and half-eaten banana on the counter.
They make eye contact for a moment, both with equally confused expressions.
Izuku gestures to the door, Shouto shrugs. He keeps walking. Izuku looks through the peephole and grasps the handle and begins twisting when Shouto comes up behind him.
He swings it inward.
Standing on their front porch is-
“No one?” Shouto mumbles, sticking his head out of the threshold to investigate, “Or at least not anymore.”
But Izuku is more focused on the small basket sitting on their front porch.
And the two infants laying inside it.
-
After having a quarter-life crisis for a moment, Shouto’s sharp intake of breath snaps him back to reality.
“Are those-”
The one on the right yawns, its tiny, blue eyes peeking open to stare at the two men.
Izuku crouches down and presses a hand on each of them. Still warm, breathing is good. He takes a small hand in each of his and turns them this way and that. No signs of hypothermia.
“Living human babies?” Izuku finishes for him, “Yes, Sho, I believe they are.”
The one on the left sneezes, alerting Izuku to the fact that someone left these children on their front porch, alone, in 20 degree weather.
“Shit, Sho we gotta get them inside.”
“But what if-”
“I don’t care if it’s a trap, they're obviously alive either way and they need to be checked over. Plus no one knows we live here.”
They had moved to a quiet neighborhood on purpose. A break from the chaos and danger that fills life as a pro hero. A nice place where their friends and family could gather. And apparently jerks who like to abandon cute babies.
Izuku frowns at the thought.
No one should know they live here, so hopefully, this was just a fun little coincidence. Well, not really fun or little, except for the literal babies.
Izuku snaps out of his thoughts, picking up the basket and bringing it into their house. Shouto locks the door behind them. They take out the babies, laying them on the couch, before thoroughly checking them and the basket for any sign of tampering.
Shouto hums, letting the smaller of the two clutch to his pointer finger, “Well, doesn’t seem to be a trap, or involve villains at all actually. Probably just need to get them warmed up and take them to the police tomorrow.
The thought sends an ache straight to Izuku’s heart, “Well, uh, maybe we watch them for a few days. Make sure there really isn’t anything wrong with them? The number one and two heroes should be able to handle a couple of babies, eh?” He nudges Shouto’s elbow playfully.
Shouto gives him a strange look. Almost like he’s asking if Izuku is being serious.
“Izuku, are you being serious?” At least his Shouto Reader is working.
He fumbles with words, not wanting to give away the fact that he’s already attached to the babies and doesn’t want them to go into the foster care system like Hitoshi. “Uh, well, I-”
“Izuku if you’re insinuating you want to keep the children- '' Damnit, Shoto knows him too well.
Tears gather in Izuku’s eyes, “I just- Sho they don’t have anyone- and we have more time available now that the hero commission changed our mandatory hours- and we’ve been talking about starting a family-” He cracks his knuckles, “I just thought maybe it’s meant to be, you know?”
Shouto sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose, then he looks at the baby who still latches onto his finger. He unlatches it and reaches down to pinch the chubby little cheek above it. Then he moves on to the other, smoothing the white wisps of hair on its head.
He glances over to the blanket they were left with. A raggedy, itchy old thing. “And you’re sure there was no note? No one’s coming back for them?”
Izuku double checks. Shaking his head when nothing falls out.
“Well,” Shouto picks up one of the cute little feet and wiggles it around, “mother will be thrilled.”
Izuku stares, “You- you're serious?”
Shouto smiles softly at his husband, then looks back at the babies, “Unfortunately, I believe I’ve grown quite attached.”
“I’ll call Tsukauchi in the morning!!” Izuku squeaks, jumping and wrapping his arms around Shouto.
“Izuku,” He wheezes.
“Sho?”
“Where are they gonna sleep?”
-
They ended up sleeping on the couch, a wall of pillows separating them from harm, and each other. And as for Shouto and Izuku? Well they didn’t sleep.
Izuku looks over from his spot in Shouto’s lap to the clock on the microwave.
“It’s 5, I’m calling him.”
Shouto yawns in agreement.
The babies had actually been quite peaceful, only waking to cry once after Shouto had opened the door coming back from the store. Just grabbing some essentials, baby formula and diapers. Enough to last a few days before they could get help. The babies looked about a week old, so Shouto just guessed on the brands.
But now, they are awake. Big eyes searching Izuku’s smiling face as he leans over their beds to coo at them.
“Hello, darlings!” He lets them both latch onto a finger each, waving their little hands around as they stare at him. “How are you both doing this morning?”
The smaller one makes a gurgling noise.
Izuku nods, “That’s good to hear.”
Shouto stands in the doorway, kicking off his shoes, behind him follow Recovery Girl and Detective Tsukauchi.
“You know,” He smiles as he enters the living room, “we can’t keep calling them babies forever. They’re gonna grow.”
“Nope!” Izuku grins down at the two, nuzzling his nose with the bigger one, “They’ll be little forever, isn’t that right?”
“Well, you two can discuss names while I check them over, dear.” Chiyo taps Izuku’s thigh lightly with her cane, “C’mon let me have a look, you have an important discussion to have with Naomasa over there.
“Detective!” Izuku hops up after carefully removing his fingers from the death grip they were under, one of the babies makes an unhappy gurgling noise and Izuku gives it a brief glance before walking over to the two men in the kitchen.
“Midoriya! Good to see you. Been busy I see, number one hero and dad of two? Todoroki informed me you would like to, er, keep the babies?”
Izuku looks to Shouto, a last-minute option to back out. Shouto looks as determined as ever, giving him a curt nod.
“Yes sir, we would.”
“Alright, I did bring adoption papers, which if signed today can be certified in less than a week. ‘S fast since you’re trusted members of the community, I have no doubt they’ll be approved. Now, would you like to tell me what exactly happened last night?”
“Of course,” Shouto speaks up, rubbing a hand on Izuku’s lower back, “We had been awake already, Izuku doing paperwork and I grabbing a snack. We heard a knock at the door at midnight-”
-
By the time Shouto finishes his retelling of the previous night’s events and they’ve both signed the adoption papers, the babies have been thoroughly checked and deemed safe and healthy by Chiyo.
“What can you tell us?” Izuku asks, leaning back into Shouto’s arms.
“Well for starters,” she grins, “you are now the proud fathers of two twin baby girls, congratulations.”
“TWINS?!” They both shout, by some miracle not stirring the twins sleeping on the couch.
Chiyo chuckles, “You had to consider it a possibility, just because their eyes are different colors doesn’t mean they aren’t related after all.” She looks pointedly at Todoroki.
“Oh my-” Izuku chokes, “Shouto, twins!!” He tugs on his husband’s sleeve, who nods robotically.
“So they’re the same age?” Shouto rasps.
Chiyo nods, “According to my checkup, miss green eyes is bigger, and I believe older. They’re both healthy and happy, but won’t be for long if you keep them on your couch. Have you chosen names?”
Izuku nods, “We did.”
“The smaller one, the one with blue eyes, is Rei. After my mother.”
Izuku nods, “The one with green eyes will be Mayumi. Both Midoriya.”
Chiyo shoots a knowing glance at Shouto and smiles, “Well, congratulations boys. I can’t believe my two troublemakers are parents. Time flies.”
Tsukauchi snorts, “Good luck, they’re gonna be a handful.”
As soon as the two leave, Izuku starts sobbing.
Shouto laughs, rubbing his back as tears of his own slide silently down his face. “I’m surprised you managed to hold it in this long, love.”
“Sh-shut up!” He cries, smacking him lightly on the shoulder. “Oh, g-god we’re parents, Sho!! Oh god I need to call my mom and all might and Ochako and Kacchan, oh god what’s Kacchan gonna say, and IIDA-”
“Izuku, love, calm down, please. I think you’re scaring the girls.”
True to his word, the twins have started sniffling like they’re about to cry.
“Oh no!!! Babies, it’s okay,” Izuku has always been a sympathetic crier, somehow Shouto doesn’t think that’s going away any time soon. Soon all three are sobbing together.
Shouto sighs. He signed himself up for this.
He grabs his phone and dials the only person who has experience with these kinds of things.
“Aizawa-sensei, we need help.”
