Work Text:
It was late when Denji heard a knock on his window. Getting up he looked out to see a familair face. He hadn't seen her since the festival, since she told him the truth. Quickly opening the window to let her in. Reze climbed in without saying a word. She had been quiet. Almost avoiding Denji since their last date. She had to shift through her feelings and what she was going to do next.
“Are you okay? I was starting to get worried about you” Denji finally broke the silence between the two of them. She shrugged before sitting on his bed. “It’s odd, I tried to leave and forget this happened but I couldn't leave you.” Her tone was upset and sad. “I thought these feelings would go away but they aren’t.” Denji sat next to her and let her vent her feelings. She had always listened to him; it was the least he could do to return the favor.
She takes a moment before speaking again. “You said you loved me, even after everything I was going to do. Why?” her emotions started to show through the stone cold express she had been trying to uphold. Tears welling up in her bright green eyes that reflected off of the moon and street lights that filled the room.
The question made the blonde think. It had started as she was pretty and kind to him. A small crush that he thought he’d get over. After all Makima was his one and only at that point. That changed a week into his visit to her. He realized the crush was not subsiding, only growing with every time he saw her. It was different than with Makima and the lust he felt towards her.
“You are kind and listen to me. You are also pretty” Denji smiles and places his hand over hers. It was simple but it wasn't like he needed much. “You make me happy as well, everytime I see you it’s like the first time over and over again” he continued and squeezed her hand as if to show some form of affection.
Her cheeks heat up to a soft pink. Taking in what he had to say was a bit much. Reze had been raised to be a stone cold killer. Her childhood was nothing more than training to make her a manipulative killer. This wasn't the treatment she was used to. Soft touches and loving words were almost forine to her minus the front she would put up.
Tears soon fell as she kept thinking about it harder and harder. Denji wasn’t good at handling situations like this. Granted between Power and Aki he hadn’t even seen either of them cry. He sat there for a moment watching as Reze started to silently cry before moving a bit closer to her. “Hey, I didn't mean to make you cry. I'm sorry…”
He didn't like seeing her cry like this. In fact part of him hated it, hated seeing her so upset. Tears kept falling down her cheeks but she didn't pull away from him. She liked being around him. He made her smile and light at the smallest of things. The way he looked at her always flushed her cheeks. The girl loved him as well but didn't know how to say it.
Denji waited a bit longer before he pulled her into a soft hug. Something they had done before when the two of them were happy. Reze freezes up a bit as the other pulls her in. A few moments of silence pass before she lets herself start to sob. It wasn't quite anymore, as she sobs he pulls her in close. “It’s okay...” he says looking down at the smaller woman. He runs his fingers through her hair trying to sooth her.
Reze eventually stops sobbing and the two are once again left in silence. He continues to hold her close to him. She couldn't even remember the last time she had cried like that but it felt nice to let it out. It felt nice to be held by the one she loved. Taking a little longer to compose herself she speaks.
“I love you Denji” she says, her soft tone unlike before. The boys cheeks headed up before he wrings to her. “I love you too Reze” he gives her a kiss on the top of her head after he says it. While he was still unsure about why Reze had reacted the way she did, he knew he wanted to protect her no matter what.
Eventually the two lay down, and sleep soon takes them. Denji continuing to hold Reze through the night. Reze stayed and let him.
