While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Summary:

A storyboard for Mega Man Recut that focuses on Dr. Light's relationship with his children.

Notes:

Version of the song used is Regina Spektor's version that was used in 'Kubo and the Two Strings'.

Work Text:

Part 1: Instrumental
(The song starts with a lab table that has various tools, blueprints, and robotic parts. That camera slowly pans down, certain blueprints are noticeable, as they are blueprints for things Dr. Light has built, including his kids. Stylistically, the paper is also 3-D, while everything else is 2-D. As the camera is panning down, the papers crumble and move slightly, although they move out of frame too quickly for the viewer to be able to understand where the papers are going. Before the instrumental ends, the camera stops and pans out to show that the crumbled papers now spell out "While my guitar gently weeps.")

Part 2: I look at you all, see the love there that's sleeping
(The shot cuts to Dr. Light, who is standing over an unfinished Proto. Dr. Light's hair and beard are made of folded paper and pop out as 3-D, opposed to the rest of his 2-D body. He smiles fondly at the robot he's working on, and gently cups his hand against Proto's chin)

Part 3: While my guitar gently weeps
(The shot cuts to Proto, who is now activated working with Dr. Light in the lab. Noticeably, there is nothing 3-D about Proto. As Dr. Light turns away from Proto to look down at his work, a 3-D tendril of paper snakes across Dr. Lights' lab work, crushing it in its grasp. At the sound of guitar strings, Dr. Light turns back to see Proto. There is a brief shot of Proto man, whose face is now 3-D and has completely unraveled into paper, revealing the tendrils are wild distortions of unfolded paper. The shot quickly cuts away to the next one)

Part 4: I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
(Dr. Light is shown alone in his lab. His paper hair and beard seem crumbled, and he looks devastated. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees the 3-D blueprints for Rock and Roll, and his hair and beard revert back to normal)

Part 5: Still my guitar gently weeps
(Dr. Light stands in front of the unfinished Rock and Roll, and although he seems happy, he also seems a little nervous and sad)

Part 6: I don't know why nobody told you
(Rock and Roll are shown arguing about something, but it's clearly just sibling banter. Neither of the siblings has any 3-D aspects to them. This scene clearly takes place before Wily became involved in their lives. Dr. Light looks bemused, but calls out to get their attention, trying to break up the argument)

Part 7: How to unfold your love
(As the twins turn to look at Dr. Light, Roll's arm becomes 3-D, highlighting the self-modifications she made to fight Wily, and Rock's entire body becomes encased in the Mega man armor, which is 3-D. Whatever Dr. Light was going to say dies on his tongue as he looks troubled)

Part 8: I don't know how someone controlled you
(The shot starts with a close-up of Dr. Light but zooms out to show he's looking at Proto man, who is fighting Mega man. Mega's angry face is visible to the viewer, but Proto's back is all that's visible since he's facing Mega)

Part 9: They bought and sold you
(The camera switches angles, showing Dr. Light's back as Mega and Proto fight. The camera zooms in to show Proto's face, as where the visor is supposed to be is made up of distorted, jagged lines of crumpled paper, leaving anything above his face indistinguishable)

Part 10: I look at the world and I notice it's turning
(Proto man changes positions as the shot zooms out, depicting the scene where Mega man defects to Wily. The edges of Mega's armor threaten to unravel, twitching angrily as he glares at Dr. Light. The brothers leave at the end of the shot)

Part 11: While my guitar gently weeps
(As the brothers leave, Roll comes in, Dr. Light almost collapses in despair, and his hair and beard unravel, making him look frazzled. Roll gently supports him back up, and they hug)

Part 12: With every mistake, we must surely be learning
(The shot cuts to Dr. Light visiting Mega after homeland security arrested him. Both look nervous, the edges of their respective armor and hair still looking battered and bent, but they start to smooth over as they tentatively smile at each other)

Part 13: Still my guitar gently weeps
(The shot cuts to Mega and Roll arguing, and even though things seem a little rough, Dr. Light watches them with a sort of tentative acceptance, understanding that even though they are not the robots they were when they were first activated, he loves them both and is proud of them)

Part 14: Instrumental
(The shot cuts to a pop-up book that demonstrates various Wily schemes. Whenever a page turns, a different scheme pops up, with every character being crude origami caricatures of themselves. The chapters these depict don't matter as much as the fact that the chapters can only take place after 'Ice age' and before 'Strange island of Dr. Wily'. As the score builds up to the next scene, the pages begin to flip rapidly, and paper begins to fly everywhere, and as one paper flies across the scene, it allows for a transition to the scene in 'Strange island of Dr. Wily' where Dr. Light and Proto talk to each other)

Part 15: I don't know how you were diverted
(Dr. Light tries to convince Proto to leave Dr. Wily, thinking that Proto might be afraid to leave after everything he's done. Proto's crumpled up face begins to unfold into his visor)

Part 16: You were perverted too
(As Proto explains that many of the better Wily schemes were his idea, his face fully unfolds into his visor, and Dr. Light gives him a startled look as if he is just seeing him for the first time)

Part 17: I don't know how you inverted
(As Proto leads the other bad-bots into Dr. Lights class during 'Campus Commandos' Dr. Light steels himself and shoots him with an electro-neutralizer pulse gun. Proto's face' which at this point has retained its crumpled up, but unfolded look, folds somewhat after being shot, the folds showing the face underneath the visor)

Part 18: No one alerted you
(Although Proto is unconscious, his face is still partially folded, revealing a stunned look in his eye. Dr. Light places his jacket under Proto, looking tired)

Part 19: I look at you all, see the love there that's sleeping
(The shot cuts to show Dr. Light confiding in Mega that he doesn't think there's any good in Proto. Dr. Light's beard unfolds slightly. But it's stopped by Mega, who quickly folds up back)

Part 20: While my guitar gently weeps
(Mega explains that he still thinks there's hope for his brother, causing Dr. Light to tear up with pride for the robot Mega has become)

Part 21: Look at you all…
(During the warship hunter chapter, Roll is presented a medal for her bravery, and Dr. Light glows with pride)

Part 22: Still my guitar gently weeps…
(When Roll asks if Dr. Light could give her new gear to fight Wily with, Dr. Light offers to give her a workshop. Roll's face lights up with excitement. Dr. Light mirrors her happiness with his own smile)

Part 23: Instrumental
(The Lights are shown fighting the bad-bots during the Mega- dreams chapter. The shot then cuts to show them going home after the chapter, with Dr. Light driving everyone back home while Mega and Roll lean on each other, asleep)

Part 24: While my guitar gently weeps
(The shot cuts to Roll yelling at Mega and Dr. Light for keeping Proto's origins a secret from her. Everyone's 3-D parts unravel a little due to the intensity of the situation. The shot then cuts to show Roll in her workshop, working on something angrily. Dr. Light comes in, looking ashamed. After a moment of awkwardness, Dr. Light apologizes for keeping the secret, and after letting out an annoyed sigh, Roll forgives him. The 3-D parts food back into place)

Part 25: Still my guitar gently weeps
(The shot cuts to show Brain bot after initially being activated. His glasses are 3-D. Later, Dr. Light gets a picture from his kids after they've taken Brain bot to California. He opens the picture to see Mega, Roll, and Brain bot smiling at the camera, Roll having pulled the boys in for a group hug. Brain bot looks a little sheepish and awkward, but less snooty than earlier, and Dr. Light smiles fondly)

Part 26: While my guitar gently weeps
(The shot changes to show Dr. Light looking shocked as Proto man defects from Dr. Wily during 'Bro-bots'. During this shot and onward, Proto is almost completely 2-D, but his scarf is 3-D. Dr. Light tearfully welcomes Proto back, and there's a few shots of the Light's just being a fairly normal family as everyone prepares for election day. Proto looks increasingly uncomfortable, but only Mega seems to pick up on it)

Part 27: Still my guitar gently weeps
(The shot cuts to Dr. Light looking devastated as Proto betrays him again, Proto's entire face immediately unfolding into indistinguishable, distorted chaos)

Part 28: Instrumental
(As the piano softly plays, the shot cuts to Dr. Light's lab, where a slow pan reveals that Dr. Light is looking at the blueprints that were used to create Proto. As 3-D tears fall into the blueprints, arms envelop Dr. Light into a hug, and he looks up to see Mega and Roll hugging him. He pulls his children towards him, the storyboard ending with the family quietly embracing)
