Work Text:
Kris wandered around Castle Town, looking for anyone they could recognize. They didn't exactly know how they arrived in Castle Town, but they had vague, blurry memories of getting ready for the ballroom dance there.
They had chosen a cobalt blue, calf-length dress to wear, with off-the-shoulder tulle straps and an A-line skirt with a magenta sash. They put bright, sparkly earring studs in their pierced ears. Their long hair was done up in a small, loose bun at the back of their head. They wore silver ballet flats for dancing comfortably.
Some of the Darkners were dancing to the slow waltz playing, while others were just chatting away in various corners around Castle Town. Kris wanted to dance, too. They perused the crowd, looking for someone to dance with. They spotted a monster who was dressed in a nice black tuxedo and pink bowtie, and was about the same height as Kris. The monster locked eyes with Kris, and a warm smile lit up his face.
"I've been waiting for you," he said as they approached him.
Kris felt theirself blush. They couldn't tell if he was trying to be romantic, or merely polite, but his voice was comforting and soft. He had familiar eyes, but Kris couldn't quite place him. They trusted him, though.
The monster reached his hand out to Kris, and they shyly took it. He led them out to the middle of the town to dance with him. Something about the way he moved captivated Kris. He gently rested his hand on their hip, still holding their other hand, and began to sway in time with the music, never taking his eyes off them.
Kris felt their heart thumping in their chest. It was a strange and new sensation, unlike the feeling they got when they were nervous or full of dread. This feeling was lighter and sweeter and made Kris come alive.
They swirled around Castle Town together, bathed in a mysterious blue light. The music made Kris forget about everything else. The monster twirled them under his arm, and then the two of them locked eyes again.
The monster held Kris closely, and leaned forward to whisper into their ear, "Kris, I'm so glad you came."
Stunned, Kris looked into his bright pink eyes. How did he know their name? Suddenly, it dawned on them. "R… Ralsei?" they stammered quietly.
"I've missed you," Ralsei said, hugging Kris close to his body. He felt so fluffy and warm, and he smelled like buttercup blossoms, exactly how Kris remembered.
Kris returned the hug, letting out a sigh. "I thought I lost you," they breathed. They were so relieved that he was back in their arms.
"I'm here," he told them, holding both of Kris' hands in his, and gazing into their eyes intently. "I won't let go of you, if you won't let go of me."
Kris couldn't stop their tears from falling silently down their cheeks. "I won't," they promised.
They were finally Home.
