“I don't get it, I always try to be courageous.” The hot plates of takeaway felt warm against Kara’s fingertips as she tipped one of them in Lena’s direction, prompting her to take it.
Takeaway dinners now became much more personal since Lena had started coming over more often. Kara had managed to convince her friend to live more freely than her usual strict diet of veggies and protein in every meal, but Lena did insist on eating the takeaway on a ceramic plate instead of the plastic containers. “I don't understand why I can't pass that trial.”
Lena’s eyes shone up in earnestness as Kara tumbled down, settling on the couch beside her. She didn't feel pity for Kara, she knew that between her own secret and the strength of the SuperFriends they could work something out together. It was just a bit more unconventional than Lena could have ever imagined.
“I don't get it either.” Lena juggled the plate across her fingertips as she used the sleeves to cover them from the burning plate. Usually Kara’s slightly increased body heat worked out well for Lena, but sometimes Kara could never tell if things would be too hot for her human skin. Kara glanced at Lena’s hands in a solemn apology before Lena continued, “You have sacrificed yourself for so many people, you literally went to the phantom zone to save humanity!”
Kara mumbled in quiet anguish. “And yet there was still something I was doing wrong.”
Lena gave up with wrestling the hot plate and put it down to lead all of her attention to Kara. She hated seeing her like this and usually wished she could take all the responsibility from her shoulders. Maybe now she finally had the chance to do something right and do exactly that.
Slyly, Lena reached her hand over and rested it on Kara’s thigh giving comforting circles of affection to try and calm down her stress levels. “Well I may have a way to fight Nyxly without you needing to pass the gauntlet.”
Kara’s eyes softened in adoration, glancing down at Lena’s hand. She relinquished her own hot food, putting it down on the coffee table. Kara grasped Lena’s hand in her own, rubbing her thumbpad across the back of her hand.
“How?” She gently prompted.
“So you know I went to Newfoundland to learn about my mother?” Kara’s caresses kept her grounded.
“Yeah,” was the soft reply she was met with. Kara knew from spending so much time around Lena that it was hard for her to be open with others. It had taken years of friendship to get comfortable around each other and despite how challenging last year was for their relationship, connections like that don’t go away so easily. The spark between them was still there and it burnt brighter than ever after they both reunited.
“Well it’s complicated but it turns out that she’s a witch and apparently so am I.” Lena watched Kara’ eyes widen. Of all the things she could have said, that was not something Kara was expecting.
“What? Thats-,” Kara tumbled over her reply. She wasn't the most articulate when it came to surprises like this, and Lena had the natural effect that left Kara tongue tied and overstimulated when they were left alone together anyway. Her cheeks had puffed up, not knowing what to say, and not wanting to push Lena.
Kara released the air in her mouth with a gentle sigh. “Seriously?”
“Yes,” was Lena’s quiet response. “I mean, as you can imagine this is hard for me. I'm a scientist but I'm not sure I am ready to talk about it yet.” Not being in control was one of Lena’s biggest fears. Admitting to the existence of magic and her potentially harnessing its power scared her beyond belief. What if she wasn't enough and something went wrong because of her? It was something she has been battling with since finding out her mother was a part of a coven. Finally speaking about it out loud suddenly made it all real. “But there are things behind rational law and apparently my bloodline is one of them. Science might not be able to defeat what we are up against but maybe a combination of science and magic can and I feel like I owe it to everyone to learn as much as I can and I thought I could start with seeing if I could untether you from Nyxly.”
Lena’s admission of feeling like she was indebted to the SuperFriends despite sacrificing life and limb to get Kara back from the Phantom Zone made Kara’s skin crawl. Before the accident, she felt defeated by Lena’s behaviour, but actions speak louder than words and Alex had nothing to say except raving praise regarding her dedication to rescue Kara. It made her heart soar in ways she never expected to when it came to her feelings about Lena.
She quickly thought up an excuse to not make Lena feel like she has so much pressure on her and her apparent magical studies, “Well I will take all of your help with magic but um... I want to stay connected to her.” Lena’s eyebrows shot up in confusion and concern. “It could be an asset. If I could sense how Nyxly’s feeling maybe I can sense what she’s planning.”
Lena immediately met her with a rebuttal, “It could be painful and dangerous!”
Kara’s hand tightened around Lena’s that still rested against her thigh. She took a deep breath and slowly brought both of their hands to her lips with a kiss, before settling them both over her own cheek. A soft reminder that they were both here for each other for whatever the future demanded of them. “Nyxly is unlike any villain we have ever faced and if it gives us an advantage. I'm willing to take that risk.”
They were so intimately close to one another. Lena knew that it didn't matter the volume she spoke, Kara could theoretically hear any whisper from miles away, but their closeness demanded her to faintly whisper her reply. “I don't know what that gauntlet was about because you are the epitome of courageous.”
“I only know how to be courageous because of you.”
Their lips met in gentle harmony. Lena had been honest with her about her magic, it was Kara’s turn to be honest about her feelings in return.
Nxyly, at that moment from her hideout across the city:
HOW THE FUCK IS SHE HORNY RIGHT NOW?!
