Bird Watching Goes Both Ways

Summary:

Living on the outskirts of the kingdom had its benefits, being bird-watched by...BIRDS is not one of them.

Chapter 1: The Confrontation

Chapter Text

CAW!!

Here they come again…

CAW!!...caw...caw…

Those ravens are back…

CAW!! Caw…

They’re crowing and squawking at me again...the same time of day like yesterday, and the day before, and the past week…

Caw...caw…

Why do they come out when I'm alone…? Why ME ? Can’t they go harass some other cookies for a change? What’s so special about me?

It seems they’ve settled down now, right on cue as they stare at me to death like last time…! I...I can’t even bear to look back at them. Their beady pink and crimson eyes are too much for someone like me, I just want to do my regular outside work…

It wasn’t always like this, it used to just be me and the local trees in the kingdom. Only a few months ago was the first time I saw those creepy raisin bird things flapping from afar.

A few months ago...hey...that’s the same time that King from the old ages and that one arm girl came to the kingdom.

The one armed girl...what was her name again…? She was dark and wore a ragged cloak and had bandages covering her limbs, she was rather short too...pff!

“What is so humorous Ms.(Y/N)...?”

W-What?!

That voice...it came from the trees, from the crows…? No no...that couldn't be possible…!

“Who- who said that?!” I asked.

Her heart began to race. In a panic she dropped the items in her hand and looked around through the trees around her home and the crows settled upon them.

“So you can hear me but not see me...as expected.”

The sound of fluttering and scuffling started right behind her...Turning around so quick she almost tripped over herself.

This...Raven girl...she’s the one who I was just thinking about. Wait- did she read my mind or something?!

And there she was, face to face with (Y/N). Black raisin did not bother to lift her head but only gaze up to (Y/N); it made her appearance a lot more intimidating than she needed to be.

(Y/N)’s face was blatant with shock.

So it really is her...the one armed girl.

“Ummm, how- how long have you been in the tree? Like since the crows came here or….”

“...” Black raisin gave no response, only looking at her with a cold stare, half her face covered in her black cowl.

“Okay...Wait-! Did...are you the one that has been sending these crows around my house everyday?” (Y/N) asked with some offense waving her index finger.

“...”

“...Yes.” She finally says with hesitance.

(Y/N) could hear the reluctance in her tone, it spoiled her mood to say the least.

“Well please stop, everyday those crows stare daggers at me like I’m bird food or something! I can barely work in peace because of them!”

It was like Black Raisin’s walls came crumbling down at her words. She was visibly taken aback, her hand covered her nose and mouth to hide the fact that her face was flushed with embarrassment. It was clear she was not used to being talked back to in such a situation.

Black Raisin then straightened her posture in a more formal position, with eyes closed she spoke.

“M-My apologies miss (Y/N), I didn't mean to be- I didn't mean to come off in such a way...I-It won’t happen again ma’am.”

She was tripping over her own words. Much unlike how she acted before.

(Y/N) took a step back from her and asked her.

“Thank you, now, why were you watching me? Please answer this time.”

Black raisin quickly recomposed herself at that, though still hesitant she answered.

“…I’m a border guard. I prefer to work on my own, especially in the dark.”

Black raisin then looked past (Y/N) towards the sky and continued.

“Gingerbrave agreed to let me do this. I’m used to working in the shadows. My eye can see in the darkest dark, no one can avoid my sight. Especially you …” As she informed she bored into (Y/N)’s eyes with her peculiar left eye, the last part seemingly unheard to (Y/N).

(Y/N) relaxed at that, and continued with her queries.

“So...what’s with the crows following you around then?” She asked curiously.

She leaned her head to look up at the trees and dozens of sharp glares stared right back at her.

Quickly she swiped her head back to black raisin and shuddered.

Black raisin chuckled. “The crows are my friends, I can communicate with them,”

As she says this a crow settles on her forearm and snuggles it’s against her.

“I feel quite comfortable with them, my crows are more clever than some cookies anyways.” A slight smirk formed at the edge of her lips at that remark.

...Was that directed at me?

(Y/N) scratched her head awkwardly at the thought.

“W-Well that’s all cleared up, glad it was just you and not a murder of crows planning to actually murder me heheh…”

Black raisin was not amused at her joke, but still she stared softly at (Y/N).

“I guess I should get back to my garden now, I-I hope we can meet on more- more normal terms next time.” She stammered.

She began to take slow steps backwards towards her home, while the sun still shined bright as it was at noon, it felt like their interaction was for hours.

“OH-! And no more watching me in the trees okay? There’s no need to watch over me so much.” She stopped and pointed her finger at black raisin somewhat playfully.

(Y/N) then turned around and continued to her home. With a wave of Black raisin’s arm the crows began to squak and fly away.

“Hmph, very well. I will refrain from doing so for now on…but know this,” she finally said.

Black raisin glared at (Y/N)’s back, she wisped behind her and-

“I’ll always be watching you from the dark…” -she muttered in her ear.

Before she could even process what she had said, black raisin had already gone. (Y/N) swiped her head around quickly, but black raisin was nowhere to be seen.

She stood frozen in shock, contemplating whether whatever she just heard was real or just her nerves getting to her.

I think I should just go inside...
