Work Text:

Azura sat there in the lunchroom, her head rested in her hands, a relaxed smile on her face. Suddenly, a peer of hers sat down next to her. It was her best friend, Lycidia Talbot, a werewolf in the beast keeping track. She had bright yellow eyes, dark blue hair, and wolf like ears and a tail.

“Hey, Zuri,” she greeted before taking a bite out of the huge slab of meat she called lunch.

Azura didn’t respond, she just let out a relaxed sigh.

“Uh, hello, Boiling Isles to Azura,” Lycidia said as she waved her hand in front of her friends face. Azura didn’t flinch, it was like she wasn’t even there.

Lycidia finally looked in the direction of what Azura was staring at, and suddenly it all made sense. A couple tables away, she could see a witchling with brown and peach hair, purplish brown eyes, and brown sleeves with purple leggings, signifying she was in the fortune telling and construction tracks. She had an apple in one hand, a romance novel in the other, and a small smile on her face.

Lycidia smirked, “Oh, I see, Tansy Bellona.”

Azura let out another longing sigh. She had a huge, burning crush on Tansy, and her performances in the school’s drama club certainly added fuel to that fire. Her performance as Elphaba in their production of Wicked especially stuck out in her mind. She had always had a slight attraction to Tansy, but the moment she heard her sing “Defying Gravity,” that’s when she fell head-over-heels for her.

“You should go ask her out,” Lycidia said with a mouthful of meat.

Azura, snapping out of her trance, sputtered. “Wha— I— she— no way!”

“Why not,” the young werewolf asked, “you really like her, don’t you?”

“Of course I do,” Azura said, “but what if I mess it up, what if she says no, or even worse; what if she says yes and the date goes really bad?!”

Lycidia placed a hand on Azura’s shoulder. “Azura, look at me! I promise everything will be fine. You just need to calm down and breath, okay?”

Azura took a couple of deep breaths, calming herself down. “Okay, I’ll do it, I’ll ask her out.”

“Great,” Lycidia said, getting back to her meal.

Azura stood up, “I’ll do it right now.”

Suddenly, before she could take a single step foreword, the bell rang, signifying the end of lunch.

“I’ll do it after class,” she said, walking out of the lunchroom.

After class, Azura stood there, watching from behind a corner as Tansy put her books in her locker. This was it, it was do or die time. She took a deep breath in, and marched over to her.

Upon reaching her, Tansy turned around. “Oh, hey, Azura,” she said with a smile.

With just those three little words, almost all of Azura’s composure and confidence melted away, replaced with a nervous mess. “Oh! Tansy,” she said with a nervous chuckle, “you’re here! I mean, of course you’re here. This is school, and you go here with me.” She then stood there for a moment, completely silent. “I’ve been talking for too long,” she whispered.

Tansy raised an eyebrow, “Are you okay?”

Azura chuckled nervously again, “I’m fine, better than fine.” Then, to compose herself, she took a deep breath in. “So, Tansy, I saw that the Boiling Isles Players are doing a production of ‘Heathers’ this Friday night, and I was wondering if you’d like to go... with me... as a... date?”

Tansy let out a tiny gasp, “I’d love to go out with you!”

“Really,” Azura said in equal pats relief and joy.

“Of course,” Tansy confirmed.

“Great,” Azura exclaimed, “I’ll pick you up around 5.”

“See you then,” Tansy said before walking off.

Azura waited until she was completely out of sight before swooning and sliding down against the lockers.

The week came and went, and it was finally Friday night. Azura was so nervous, she had to make that night perfect. She had gathered her family into the living room, hoping to get their thoughts on her outfit for the night.

“So, what do you guys think,” she asked as she stepped into the room.

She wore a blue long-sleeve shirt with a black t-shirt over it, with the phrase, “Witch Please,” written on it in white. She also had on a pair of blue jeans and beige slip-ons.

“You look fine, sweetie,” Amity said, “the other five outfits were great too.”

“I’m not so sure,” Azura said, “I’ll go back and change.”

Luz quickly got up and caught her befor she made another wardrobe change. “Mija, it’s okay, there’s no need to be so nervous.”

“But, Mamá, I really like this girl,” Azura protested, “I don’t wanna mess this up.”

“Zuri, take it from me,” Amity said, “don’t worry yourself over the little things.”

“You are a smart, beautiful young lady with a lot to offer,” Luz said, “your date is gonna go fine.”

“Whenever you feel nervous, just stop for a moment, and take a deep breath,” Amity suggested, “trust me, it does wonders for you.”

Azura did as her mother instructed, and took a deep breath, she could feel all the insecurities and doubts fade away. “Alright, I’m going out on my date.”

She then grabbed Luz’s staff and marched out the door, “I’ll see you all later tonight.”

“Have fun, mija,” Luz said.

Azura then left the house, leaving Luz, Amity, and Zephyr alone in the living room.

“You guys wanna watch a movie,” Amity asked.

“Sure,” Luz and Zephyr replied simultaneously.

“Alright then,” Amity said as she grabbed the remote, “let’s see what they have on Hexflix.”

Azura walked up to Tansy’s front door. She knocked on it and waited a few minutes before she was answered.

Tansy stepped out. “Hey, Azura,” she said, closing the door behind her, “how do I look?”

She was wearing a purple, long sleeve shirt and a pair of short-legged overalls. Additionally, her hair was tied up into two large puff balls.

Azura’s face turned redder than a tomato. “Gorgeous,” she whispered.

“What,” Tansy asked.

“Great,” Azura exclaimed, “you look great!” She stood there for a moment, completely silent. “We should get going.”

The pair then started walking into Bonesborough. As they made their way through the town, they noticed some bright lights and loud noises. As they rounded the corner, they caught a glimpse at what the commotion was: the Carnival was back in town.

“Huh, didn’t know the Bonesburough carnival was tonight,” Tansy said, “wanna check it out.”

Azura pulled out her scroll to check the time. “Eh, why not, we have two hours before the show starts.”

“Great, let’s go,” Tandy exclaimed as she grabbed Azura’s hand and pulled her along.

The pair had a great time; they played games, won prizes, ate sugary carnival food, and even went on a couple of rides. Tansy kept clinging to Azura’s arms in he House of Horrors; it was a good thing they were in the dark for that, otherwise Tansy would’ve seen Azura’s face constantly turning the brightest shades of red.

Azura wanted to avoid the Tunnel of Love though, she was a way too nervous for that. They then caught a glimpse of their next ride: the Scarris Wheel.

“Let’s check out the Scarris Wheel,” Tansy suggested.

“I’m not sure,” Azura objected, “we only have thirty minutes to get to the theater.”

“Don’t worry, it’ll be quick,” Tansy replied before dragging Azura along with her.

The pair got seated, and the ride got started. They slowly rose up and until they finally reached the top of the wheel. They were about to go down, when they suddenly felt a jolt from their seat. They had stopped completely.

“Why did we stop,” Azura asked.

Tansy looked down and saw smoke coming from the ride’s control panel, and the operator running around like a scarred chicken.

“Looks like the ride broke down,” she said before turning to her date, guess we’re gonna be stuck up here for a while.”

“Nononono NO,” Azura objected, we’re gonna miss the show!”

“Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll have us down quick,” Tansy reassured, “besides, this isn’t so bad.”

“How,” Azura asked.

Tansy motioned for her to look forward. Azura looked and saw the amazing night sky, all the lights of the carnival, and the moon shining bright. It was like something out of a painting.

“It’s so beautiful,” Azura said, awestruck.

Tansy rested her head against Azura’s shoulder. “Yeah, it is.”

Azura mirrored her date and rested her head too. The pair just stared out into the horizon for a while, not saying a word... until Tansy piped up.

“So... why did you ask me out,” she asked.

“What,” Azura questioned.

“Why did you ask me out,” Tansy asked again, “what does someone as extraordinary as you see in someone as plain as me?”

“Are you kidding me,” Azura scoffed, “You’re the extraordinary one here: you have the most amazing singing voice, you’re a phenomenal actress, you’re so outgoing and confident, and you’re the most beautiful girl in Hexside!”

Tansy blushed feverishly, “You think I’m exceptional?”

Azura blushed as well, “Well... yeah.”

“I always thought you were exceptional,” Tansy explained, “you’re the daughter of the two most powerful witches on the Boiling Isles, the school’s star grudgby player, you get amazing grades, you’re so fearless and adventurous, and YOU are the most beautiful girl in school!”

Azura’s face turned even redder. “You really think that highly of me?”

“Well, yeah,” Tansy said, “it’s the reason I’ve... sorta... have a crush on you...”

The pair were silent for a moment. “You have a crush on me,” Azura asked incredulously, “I’ve had a crush on you!”

“Really,” Tansy exclaimed, “I’ve been wanting to go out with you for so long, I’ve just been too nervous to ask!”

Azura chuckled, “Same here, I was like a bundle of nerves when I asked you out.”

The pair started laughing. Here they were, two young witches who liked each other intensely, but both were too nervous to make a move. And now, they were on a date, they couldn’t help but find it funny, and relieving.

“So,” Azura asked, “what do we do now?”

Tansy gave her a suggestive smirk, “I think I have an idea.”

Azura instantly knew what she was thinking. She put a hand on Tansy’s cheek, Tansy rapped her arms around Azura’s neck, the pair’s faces slowly got closer and closer to each other. They shut their eyes, opened their mouths, and shared a passionate first kiss.

It was like nothing either had ever experienced before, like if fireworks and electricity had a baby. Neither of them almost didn’t want to stop, but they had to get air eventually. The couple slowly separated their lips, as if trying to prolong the sensation of the other’s lips on their own.

Azura and Tansy opened their eyes and stared deeply and lovingly into the other’s. “That was...,” Tansy said.

“Extraordinary,” Azura finished.

Just then, they felt a jolt from the ride again. They were starting to move downward.

“Looks like they got the ride fixed,” Tansy said.

“Yeah,” Azura agreed as she checked her scroll, “and we still have time to make it to the show.” She grabbed Tansy’s hand, and quickly ran in the direction of the Bonesborough theater. “Come on, let’s go!”

The following Monday, in between periods, Azura got her books from her locker. “Hey, Zuri,” Lycidia greeted as she walked up to her friend, “how’d your date go?”

“Hey, you,” Tansy greeted Azura as she walked up to her.

“Hey, yourself,” Azura greeted back before she and Tansy shared a small kiss.

“Huh, guess that answers my question,” Lycidia observed.

“Come on, we don’t wanna be late for class,” Azura said.

The trio then walked to their next class, with Azura and Tansy holding hands all the way.
