    After the fight on the helicarrier, the Winter Soldier doesn't return to Hydra, but isn't fully cleared of its brainwashing, either. It failed at its mission the first time, and its operational status is in sharp decline. But it has a new plan:

    The asset will gain Rogers' trust by pretending to be his "best friend", James Buchanan Barnes. The target will not expect an attack from “Bucky”, so killing him should be simple.

    (But only if it can successfully ignore the frequent, vivid flashbacks which keep surfacing from Bucky's past life.)

    <Recalibrating.> The asset will impersonate “Bucky”. Killing Rogers will be straightforward. The mission will be completed.
