Work Text:

The jet was quiet, caught in that spell of late-night flights, time suspended in the air. Every movement, every noise from both the machine and its occupants seemingly subdued and gentle- reverence for the long day lived. At one end, Rossi and Spencer played a near silent game of chess, while others spread out to read or sleep, each recharging as much as they could. Tara and Emily were at the other end, seated across from each other. Emily had multiple files opened in front of her, and Tara a book, though neither were paying attention to the words on the page. Instead, they were each focused on their phones, and the private text conversation clearly taking place. It was getting a little old for the rest of the members of the team, to watch the pair go through such great pains to conceal their relationship and still fail miserably.

JJ had been the first to catch on, noticing Emily’s blush one Monday morning when the blonde had asked how her weekend had been. Emily tried to brush it off, of course, but when Tara made a similar fumble mere minutes later, all became clear. It wasn’t like JJ minded the lying, she could understand why the two of them would want to keep their romantic life separate from their work life, it was just that the lying was so bad. Neither of them ever seemed to come up with a plausible story for when JJ knew they had been together, and instead relied on a strategy of just hoping no one asked. After watching them text back and forth for minutes without even bothering to turn a page, JJ decided it was time to have some fun.

How’s the book? JJ texted.

Tara at least had the wherewithal to not respond immediately, maintaining the ruse that she was reading and not staring at her text messages. It’s good! she finally responded. Have you read it?

Yeah! Penelope and I read it together last year. When it was revealed that Perry and Saxon were the same, she threw her book across the room. JJ had her.

I actually haven’t gotten to that part yet, Tara responded quickly.

Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry! From where I’m sitting, it looks like you’re reading the very end, so I thought you had gotten there already. JJ smirked to herself.

It’s alright, was all Tara could come up with to say back.

Come over for an apology dinner? Will and I have been meaning to invite you for a while. JJ sent.

That sounds great. Tara’s eyebrows furrowed. My calendar is up to date, so if you just wanna look at it and see if there’s a time that works for you guys? It should be shared with you.

JJ didn’t bother responding, and instead went to her calendar app to create an event for the dinner with Tara. She added Tara and Will, and then Emily before titling the event “Double Date” and sending the invites. She could barely contain her laughter as she watched the two women get the notification, look up at each other, and then turn in their seats to look at her. JJ just winked at them before turning back to her paperwork for a smile. A few seconds later, her phone pinged to let her know that both had accepted their invites.

Notes:

Sorry this is a day late! It's been a crazy few days with work. Hopefully I'll get Day 6 up later today and then we'll be back on track- tho no promises as I'm literally posting this during a Zoom meeting lol
