Hearing your phone go off, you jump awake. Moving to sit up on the bed, you glance over at your phone. Ryuji. You’re instantly confused, Normally he’d be asleep at this time, like most people, or he’d be pulling an unintentional all-nighter playing video games.
You reach for your phone and instantly hit ‘accept’, afraid you wasted too much time already.“Hello?” You speak softly and groggily, still just beginning to wake up. You’re met with silence on the other end. “Hello?” You say again, this time a little louder. You’re about to hang up when you hear the sound of muffled sobs. “Ryuji, are you okay?” You can hear your own worry in your voice. “C-Can you come over? I really need you right now.” You immediately throw the sheet off of you and rush to your closet. “Of course, I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
In a matter of minutes you’re dressed and rushing out the door and on to the street. You pause for a moment and glance at your bike chained up to its post. You know the subway isn’t running this time on night and didn’t know how much time, let alone noise, unlocking your bike would take. So you opted for another option, running. You knew you weren’t Ryuji speed, But with how he sounded on the phone, you hoped that would give you the adrenaline to get to him.
Within 5 minutes you got to Ryuji’s house. And for the first time ever, you were happy he lived so close. It wasn’t long before his home came into view. You push yourself harder only to suddenly stop at the sight of someone with blonde hair sitting on the porch with their head in their hands.
You feel your heart break at the sight. Normally Ryuji is happy, energetic, and being the upbeat person everyone knows him as. Yet this morning, he’d nothing like his normal self.
As you’re walking up to him your mind goes through all the possibilities as to why he’s like this. Did he fail an important test? no, none were coming up. Did he face a horrible person in the metaverse? he would’ve gotten mad, angry, not this. When you come face-to-face with him, your mind goes blank as you stare into his tear stained eyes. When he noticed you he slowly gets up from his sitting position and softly requests a hug by opening his arms towards you. You quickly accept by walking towards him and encasing the blonde in a hug.
For what felt like hours, the two of you stayed together. All around you could hear the sounds of Tokyo at night. Crickets chirping, stray cats meowing, cars honking, and people talking. It wasn’t until Ryuji pulled away that your grip loosened.
“Sh- She’s gone.” You looked at him with a confused look. Ryuji’s never mentioned another ‘She’ besides his mother. Then it hit you, A few months ago he mentioned his mom went to the doctor for a check up for a bad couch, but it was nothing serious then. “Come on, Let’s go to my place. This may not be the best place for you to be.” He nodded at your suggested before taking your hand and letting you lead him away.
Glancing at yourself in your mirror, you smooth out the winkles in your black outfit before turning away and making eye contact with the blonde who just walked in. “Are you ready?” The softness in your voice became a permanent tone during the past week since that night outside his house. Since neither of you wanted him to stay in the home he shared with his mother, or be with a relative he hasn’t seen in years, he was staying with you instead. Most of his time was spend in his room playing video games, the only time you saw him was during meal times. While you wanted to check in on him, you also knew he needed time to think about the sudden news and grieve for his loss.
After the funeral was complete, everyone was informed about were the dinner would be held. You got up from your seat and began to follow the crowd when a hand on yours stopped you. You turned your head slightly to see Ryuji looking down at the ground.
“Do you have a minute? I kinda need to say something before we go.” You turned your body fully to face him before telling him it was okay. “Thanks, I realized earlier that I never thanked you. You’ve been with me this entire week, and you coulda just said that ‘sorry for your loss‘ bullshit and left, but you didn’t.” You smile at his words when an idea came to your head “You’re welcome, I’ll always be there when you need me. Why don’t we skip the dinner and go get ramen instead?” The blonde perked up at your suggestion. “You read my mind.”
