A Second Chance

Summary:

In a desperate attempt to change the fate of the Koopa family before it is sealed, Hip Koopa gives up his physical existence for the sake of an elaborate spell. This spell could give his family another chance— in another lifetime, that is. Nearly a thousand years later, the reincarnates of the seven Koopalings roam that very same island, unknowing they are mere carbon copies of who they once were. An uneasiness fills in the hearts of the Koopalings, as they begin to realize there’s something quite extraordinary about the lives they live— and it goes much deeper than the body that lies beneath the garden.

Notes:

This story includes characters from the 90’s cartoon known as “The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3”, which I HIGHLY recommend if you’re a huge fan of the Koopalings!

If you haven’t watched the show, here’s a little background info to get you caught up:
The Koopa Kids in the cartoon were early iterations of the Koopalings we know and love today— their names were different because their official names were not published until after the show began; hence the names Kooky (Ludwig), Bully (Roy), Cheatsy (Larry), Hip (Lemmy) and Hop (Iggy), Kootie Pie (Wendy), and Bigmouth (Morton). Even Bowser was named “King Dad”, and Kamek was named “Wizenheimer”, who was an old koopa wizard or something who lived alone in the woods. All of these characters do appear in this story, so it does help to have watched the cartoons to recall their behaviors.

I hope you enjoy this story! Questions and other feedback highly appreciated.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Kooky felt the warmth of the sunshine as it hit his eyes from the window, and the coolness of the stone slabs of the floor beneath him. The light was enough to ease him awake from his slumber.

He blinks to bring his eyes to focus but regrets the decision quickly. Beneath his left eye, he feels the soreness of his skull. He becomes aware of the aches in his bones and the exhaustion his body is overcome with, as he lifts himself by his hands and knees, and sits back in a daze. Examining his surroundings, he recognizes the easternmost corridor of the castle. The light shone through one of the numerous windows near the top of the tall stone walls, its dying color peering in and splashing the room with a beautiful golden orange color.

He began to feel uneasy. It was evening when he’d last remembered being conscious, and here the sun was setting again… How long had it been since he’d ended up here?

He feels sick now, tasting blood in his mouth and throat too. He runs his tongue along his teeth, everything’s intact… surprisingly. He can’t remember how he’d ended up in this place.

Chills went up his shell, and the shadows the sun couldn’t reach seemed colder. Out of instinct Kooky looked around for King Dad. He’d been pretty upset when they’d failed their last mission… Perhaps he was the reason for all this. His hips felt sore at the moment, though he recalled the soreness from another previous encounter with his father.

He didn’t remember what he’d done, as he couldn’t remember anything anymore. The incidents all blended into one. If he continued to stay here, he risked another encounter. Kooky hated to admit such a thing, but these types of situations happened often. He wondered who else dad had gotten to by now.

Pushing through the pain he stands up and limps hurriedly down the corridor, desperate to relocate somewhere he could not find him.
