Summary
When Father John Pruitt arrives on Crockett Island for the first time, Mildred Gunning has just been abandoned, first by her husband who has gone to war, then by the priest who has been stationed in her church all her life. She is not ready to trust him at once, and in his attempts to show himself worthy of her trust, maybe he ends up overachieving a little.
