Chapter Text
Technoblade had never expected to live in the apocalypse for so long. In fact he should’ve never made it past the first week.
He had been by himself for a long time, even before the apocalypse started, which should have been a death sentence for any other person. When was the last time anyone stayed to themselves successfully in any apocalypse movie? The survivors were always in groups or survivor camps. Never alone.
He also had to admit he had never had much interest in weaponry, he had taken self defense lessons and could use a knife if he needed to but with anything else he was thoroughly lost. Not that that lasted for long after the infection became an issue.
With all the odds stacked against him, the apocalypse had been far from kind to Techno, at every turn he seemed to meet Death well too close to comfort. Yet every time she seemed to meet Techno with the mercy to live another day.
The first time it happened it was the first week of the outbreak, as he was running from a horde a car came barreling right towards him. As Techno dove away he could feel the car just barely scrape by him as it landed squarely in the horde behind him.
The poor person in the vehicle barely had a chance as the horde broke in and tore him to shreds, yet it left just the opportunity for him to escape without injury.
On the second, a horde of the infected snuck up on Techno, armed with only an axe and adrenaline he fought tooth and nail to make it out alive. Every zombie in his path was slaughtered mercilessly, and just as soon as it started it was over and he collapsed inside of a shoddily barricaded house. The only substantial injury healing into a rather nasty scar that somehow remained uninfected.
Techno thought it was just a fluke, some insane stroke of luck. Oh how he was wrong, yet who could blame him? If he had gone back and told himself everything he had lived through his past self would never believe him.
The fifth incident, the one that changed how he saw everything. A survivor had caught him in the middle of a supply run, Techno should’ve heard him coming. In no time there was a gun to his head and the promise of death. No matter what choice he made it should’ve ended the same way.
Technoblade had handed over his supplies and prepared for his final moments. There was no other option, no way to protect himself, but the skittish man seemed to pause for a moment.
In a moment just a moment he dropped his gun, backing away from something behind techno. The man ran, as fast as he could, into the streets outside of the ruined store.
As soon as the man left, Techno hastily grabbed the gun and turned around, just to find nothing there. Startled and not wanting to test his luck he gathered everything he could, keeping the pistol that nearly took his life.
Technoblade wasn’t typically religious, but after the fifth he started to leave monuments and offerings during his routine. Anything he could spare that another survivor wouldn’t pick up or find useful he would offer to her. Never once did he forget to leave something for her.
It worked, everytime without fail He would survive every encounter he faced, and every day he would set something aside just for Lady Death.
Today was different, Techno was about to do something crazy. It was already crazy enough for the average person, but even for him it was testing his luck.
Technoblade was going to go into the city.
Everyone knew entering a city was a death wish, and Techno wasn’t stupid, but all of his traveling was growing tiring. He wanted a safe place to himself where he could rest for once, where he could finally settle after the year or so in the apocalypse.
There was no way he was going to a survivor camp. Not after the first and only place he entered tore itself apart from the inside, like an animal gone rabid. No one saw the signs before it was too late.
It had been the worst scare of his life, in his escape he became deathly injured, his wounds slowly infected as he barricaded himself in a small cottage miles away.
(In his weakened delirious state he could’ve sworn he saw a figure watching him, and Techno knew she would keep him safe.)
In the morning Techno skipped his typical morning routine in favor of travel, the city wasn’t too far and he needed to do something important before daring to go inside.
Just outside of city limits he began to prepare, his axe easily tore through the metal of a nearby car. Everything came apart as smoothly as it could be, with Techno not quite knowing enough about cars to know how to take it apart properly. Not that he needed anything in particularly good condition for what he was making.
After the car was successfully torn apart he found a flat enough piece of ground and began to build, simple bars and the top of a battery began to form the structure. Pieces of metal became crude walls to protect the shrine from the elements.
Techno took extra care with the inside, taking the cleanest piece of fabric found in the car and laying it out at the bottom of the shrine. Then came the most important part, pulling out a small pouch he pulled out the most important relics and put them on the fabric. A handful of coins, some teeth, a finger bone, all meaningless to anyone but him and Lady Death. Holding the last piece in his hand he placed it with care in the middle of the shrine.
It was the bullet that nearly killed him all so long ago, and today it would be the most important offering he could ever give.
Technoblade would survive the city.
