Work Text:

Like clockwork, Lan Xichen was awake when the first ray of dawn began to bloom behind the curtain of their bedroom window. He reached out with his arm to his side, searching for Jiang Cheng's warmth that was like a balm to his broken soul.

Lan Xichen slowly turned to his beloved, and inhaled softly..

A-Cheng.. my light, my being, my heart...

And like clockwork, the almost unbearable lightness he would feel from thinking about his beloved during those first moments of the day was followed by that absurd, sharp urge to make sure that his A-Cheng was still breathing.

Lan Xichen found himself staring at the rise and fall of his beloved's breathing. Minutes must have passed by, Lan Xichen was not sure and quite frankly not really caring too much if had been for hours.

He then slowly, almost dreadfully so, placed his head on Jiang Cheng's chest, turning his head slightly so his ear was gently pressed to the thumps of his A-Cheng's heart. I could make music with this, he mused, his mind of a musician began to compose a few strings of notes to that rhythm.

A-Cheng's birthday is coming soon, will there be enough time to finish it, will A-Cheng like it or perhaps he will think it is too much, or too shameless or maybe I am the one not enough for him or..

"Huan-ge, you're thinking too loudly," Jiang Cheng slowly opened his eyes with a small smile on his still-sleepy-soft face.

"I'm sorry, my heart, did I wake you?"

"Not really.. but I had the weirdest dream of being in this party. There was a giant cake rolled in, really cliche. And then," squeezing Lan Xichen's peachy behind which brought a yelp to Lan Xichen's lips, "you jumped out of the cake and started singing Happy Birthday to me. Pretty sure you were naked. Yup, you were."

"A-Cheeng~" Lan Xichen whined while lightly thumping Jiang Cheng's arm with his fist, which Jiang Cheng quickly grabbed and brought to his lips for a gentle kiss.

Jiang Cheng sat up and brought Lan Xichen to his lap, gently pressing his forehead to Lan Xichen's.

"Happy Birthday, Huan-ge."

"I love you."

"I love you."

"Forever in time you will have my heart."

Each declaration by Jiang Cheng was followed by a lulling brush of Jiang Cheng's lips on Lan Xichen's cheeks and forehead and nose, and Lan Xichen suddenly felt a prickle of tears in his eyes. The last word from Jiang Cheng was followed by a devouring kiss on Lan Xichen's trembling lips.

"I love you too, A-Cheng, always."
