The moment the doors shut, Law was at Penguin's side, kneeling in his friend's blood.
"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry," Shachi was saying over and over, kneeling over Penguin's unmoving body. His shaking, bloodied hands tried in vain to soothe some of the hurt he had caused under Doflamingo's magic, smoothing Penguin's short hair back, where it stayed, slicked with blood. "I'm so sorry."
"Save it," Law said shortly, elbowing him out of the way. "You're in shock. Go sit down. San-ya, here. I need you."
Sanji went to crouch by him, but suddenly Law pushed him so he fell, landing on his butt hard.
Sanji glared, still unable to speak without setting off the explosive bracelets, but Law wasn't even looking at him. One of Law's hands was on the back of Sanji's calf, the other holding his heel, raising Sanji's leg so he could see the bottom of Sanji's shoes.
"I can patch him, but there's too much blood. I need fire," Law explained, eyes darting about quickly as he studied the sygaldry on the soles of Sanji's shoes. "Earlier, when you activated these, there was fire. How?"
Sanji kicked Law, sending the other man falling back into the pool of blood. Law scowled at the petty payback, even as Sanji hopped to his feet and tapped his shoes together three times. He struck one heel against the stone of the roof, firmly resisting the force of the shoes trying to do what they were made to do and send him flying. The compression and energy ignited the layer of air directly in contact with the shoes, wreathing them in flame.
Law nodded and peeled back the torn remains of Penguin's clothing, and indicated where Sanji should step. Sanji did, and Penguin screamed and thrashed. Law held him down.
"Steady," Law said in a low voice. "It's only for a moment more."
He glanced up at Sanji, not for any longer than a second, but there was such easy partnership there, and deep gratitude. It was hard to accept that in exchange for stepping on a near-dead man with magically burning shoes. Sanji felt a bit guilty, almost like he'd taken a gift meant for someone else.
It was a relief in more than one way when Law finally motioned for Sanji to step back, and started to work his signature blue-white magic instead.
