the morning skies were a faint shade of pink as the brisk early fall weather permeated through the windows of the dorm. bent over the stove, yeonjun was spending the early hours preparing for the others’ awakening, preparing enough breakfast for a crowd. his own iced coffee sat untouched - he was too focused on the task at hand to consider it yet. today was one of their few and far between off days, and he was determined to make the most of it.
yeonjun could hear a rustling from one of the bedrooms down the hall. not yet 8 am, the creaking sound of a door opening raised the tips of his ears in awareness.
pat pat pat. the sound of kai’s sock-clad feet pattering down the hallway was unmistakable, being the only member to immediately put on socks when waking up in the colder months, clearly following the scent of the eggs which yeonjun had freshly cracked into the pan. As if on cue, kai popped his head into the kitchen, and the toast popped up and out of the toaster. acknowledging the younger’s presence, yeonjun peeked over to the sleepy kai, admiring the way his messy hair settled into easy waves overnight before turning his attention back to the task at hand, cracking another egg into the pan.
nestling his chin onto yeonjun’s shoulder, kai wrapped his arms around his waist. the perfect height to engulf the older’s frame in his embrace, the sleepy warmth still radiating from kai brought a comforting smile to yeonjun.
“mornin’ junnie,” kai said, grogginess clouding his voice.
“mornin’ sugarplum,” yeonjun smirked, knowing by how kai dug his chin in further that his cheeks would be tinted in embarrassment at the nickname. “what’s got you up so early?”
“smelled too good out here to stay in bed,” kai cooed, adjusting his stance to press a small kiss to yeonjun’s cheek, returning the flustered shy blush.
the eggs began to bubble as yeonjun attempted to wrestle closer to the stove to move them to the nearby plate, kai still latched onto his waist. the laughter and happiness of the pair were sure to wake the others just a few doors down, also eager to enjoy the meal and company of the duo. their days off were rare, but mornings like this one made all of their hard work worthwhile.
