the crisp fall air seemed to lay over the park in a wave, the setting of the sun dropping the temperature a few degrees. resting comfortably on a bench just meters from the river, the two admired the way the skyline turned into a sea of lights. after weeks and weeks of promotions and schedules, yeonjun and kai were finally enjoying a quiet evening, opting to take a stroll downtown, eventually ending at han river.
the world seemed quiet, too quiet, and it became one of the few times since their meeting where they could cling to each other without the worry that they would end up on the news. they had walked to their destination with ease, fingers interlaced, eyes peering over at one another periodically just to see the joy on the other’s face.
reaching into his small bag, yeonjun pulled out his phone and tangled headphones, passing the latter to kai to unravel without saying a word. the younger smiled, and took the mess of cord, easily completing the silent request. after this many years, they had become accustomed to not needing to say out loud what they needed, it always seemed that the other knew exactly what they were thinking. kai handed the headphones back to yeonjun, reveling in the way their fingers met for a brief moment.
yeonjun had spent the moments in which kai was preoccupied by quickly opening up spotify, searching for the playlist he had made a few weeks ago for this very moment. the glow of the title ningning ♡ was able to be seen by kai, and he couldn’t hide the smile that lit up his face.
plugging in the headphones, yeonjun passed one to kai before putting one in his own, leaning over to rest his head on kai’s shoulder. the sweet melodies yeonjun had chosen brought back memories of their first trainee days, when they had all shared the music they enjoyed. now, this specific song had more meaning, a way of wordlessly communicating the feelings they felt for each other.
reaching his arm around the older, kai pulled yeonjun closer to him, the older’s forehead resting in the nape of his neck. the temperature around them continually dropping as the evening progressed meant they had to stay close for warmth, but truthfully they’d do this in the heat of summer. the light of each room upon the skyscrapers was visible, all turning on in rapid spontaneity.
sitting back upright in his seat, yeonjun turned to kai, eyebrows raising in endearment. kai returned the fond gaze, placing a quick kiss to yeonjun’s lips before pulling backward, checking to make sure there were no onlookers. yeonjun had always admired how kai could get lost in the moment so easily, not remembering that anyone could see them.
“you’re too precious,” yeonjun cooed, pulling himself back into kai’s chest, wrapping his arms around his waist.
“i just love you a lot,” kai blushed.
“i love you too, sugarplum,” yeonjun replied.
the moon slowly began its descent as the pair sat on the bench until it became too cold for their thin jackets to bear. tomorrow, they’d wake up and be back to their normal routines. but for tonight, the world was theirs, and the sparkles in each other's eyes were not left ignored.
