”Umm, it seems I forgot something”, Kakashi said.
They had set their camp for the night, put up all the traps and barriers and eaten their evening snacks. Iruka was ready to go to sleep.
”What is it?” Iruka asked as he laid out his sleeping bag.
For the love of gods, please don’t tell me you forgot the rest of the food, Iruka pleaded silently in his mind.
He was very rarely sent on a mission with Kakashi, and Iruka was glad for that. He was already fighting the urge to strangle the man, and they had only been traveling for one day. A long day, as they had left the village at the crack of dawn, but still.
He might give into that urge if Kakashi had forgotten something crucial. He was not traveling hungry.
Kakashi stayed silent.
”Well, what is it then?” Iruka asked when Kakashi didn’t elaborate.
He just wanted to sleep. The diplomatic mission they were sent to wasn’t going to be challenging, but that didn’t mean he was going to ignore rest.
Kakashi was avoiding his eyes.
”My sleeping bag”, Kakashi finally sighed.
”Come again?” Iruka asked. He was sure he had heard that one wrong.
”I forgot my sleeping bag”, Kakashi said again, this time loud and clear.
Iruka just stood there and stared at Kakashi. He was dumbstruck.
”Seriously? Are you just trying to wind me up?” he asked.
”No. I really did forget it”, Kakashi said sheepishly.
It was autumn, and the nights were getting cold. There was no way anyone could sleep without the warmth of the sleeping bag.
Iruka could already see where this was going.
”You’re supposed to be an elite, a genius. How does one even forget something like that? It’s literally tied to the backbag”, Iruka whined and rubbed his temples.
Kakashi just looked at him.
”Don’t you puppy eye me”, Iruka warned him.
”Iruka, I’ll freeze to death”, Kakashi said.
”Then freeze”, Iruka deadpanned and Kakashi just pouted. His sad face was visible even through the mask.
”Damn it, Kakashi. Do I seriously need to start packing your things for you?” Iruka said with an eyeroll.
”Would you?” Kakashi asked with a hopeful voice.
”No, I would not”, Iruka said firmly, ”Now crawl in before I change my mind.”
They squeezed into the sleeping bag clearly designed for one person. The only thing making it possible was the fact that the bag was designed for one person and their weapons – without the weapons it was just enough to fit them both in.
”You’re making me suspect you forgot it on purpose”, Iruka said as Kakashi nuzzled closer.
He was behind Iruka, hand wrapped around his waist and head pressed against Iruka’s. It was a familiar motion, something he did every night when he was home.
”I might in the future”, Kakashi said softly and kissed his hair.
”If there’s an ambush, there won’t be a future. We’ll both die in this thing. I can barely move my hands”, Iruka said.
”Nah, this route is more than safe and your traps will stop anyone and anything”, Kakashi said with confidence.
Iruka sighed.
”I swear to gods this is the last mission I’m taking with you, ever”, he said.
”Sure thing”, Kakashi answered and kissed his neck.
Iruka smiled silently. They didn’t work well together on missions, but he couldn’t stay mad for long.
Especially when Kakashi seemed so at ease, his already steady breath lulling Iruka to sleep as well.
