Work Text:
Eret had a choice to make.
War had crept in, slowly and then at once all-consuming. In a matter of days, Wilbur's flights of fancy about turning his "hot dog van" into its own independent nation had gone from fun and entertainable to painfully real, and Dream's protests had turned from light and chiding to... well.
Another barrage of arrows assaulted the L'Manberg army's current base of operations as they sat huddled and silent together. Dream's words rang out in Eret's head again. White flags. By tomorrow. Or you will be DEAD.
"What are we going to do."
They could tell that Tubbo wasn't really asking the question; none of his peers had the answer, and they all knew it. The siege was inescapable, insurmountable, and utterly draining of the entire team's hope for victory.
Wilbur and Tommy seemed to have retained some spark of defiance through the battles. Although he sat stock still and stared straight ahead at almost all times, they knew Wilbur was always listening, always thinking, always plotting. He'd come up with something in the end. They all knew that, as much as one can know their dearest hope to be true. Tommy, on the other hand, sat with his arm around Fundy, humming quietly to the child. He was so young - they both were; for Prime's sake, Tommy was only sixteen - too young to grow up in a place like this one.
Today, like most other days, they simply sat and took the blows. Luckily, a base of obsidian and blackstone kept them safe from flaming arrows - they'd been scarred by Dream's TNT before, too, and built up almost to the point of overkill. The windows were nothing more than slits in the wall now, only letting out the most careful of bow shots. Everything was built to last and protect. They were soldiers, after all.
Perhaps another day soon they’d launch an attack. A more hopeful day - a day they could pretend that this wasn’t a losing battle.
Eret had a choice to make, and they didn’t want to choose the wrong side of history.
When night fell, they decided, they’d make that intention clear to the Dream SMP.
