ivory is a selkie leaving behind the ocean for something she can’t quite name. she’s running. she's chasing. she’s trying to be normal in this small town in the mountains, landlocked with a freshwater lake and a quaint little cabin. the person who last lived here didn’t go quietly, but the lake is always hungry. she swims, sometimes, just to sate the itch beneath her skin, but oftentimes she leaves her pelt behind. it feels like tempting fate. as if she needs an excuse.
sven is on a mission. this wasn’t the life he pictured for himself five years ago, fresh out of college with a degree in civil engineering and the skills to get himself fired for running his mouth. he’s still helping people, he argues to himself at night, not by building bridges or dams but by hunting down the monsters that lurk in the night. he still sketches sometimes on long train rides and deep into the night on stakeouts. a beautiful suspension bridge. steel cables and glass gates.

In retrospect, he should have known better.
Molly assumes it’s a misunderstanding; it wouldn’t be the first time his infernal heritage has caused him trouble, someone of small mind and smaller sensibilities taking exception to his presence and assuming he’s up to no good. Point being, he isn’t overly surprised when he’s approached by two Crownsguard asking that he please come with them.
They’re polite, apologetic, and he’ll kick himself later at how easily they take him in, how completely he buys it. It takes him longer than it should to realize they’re not headed to the city’s stockade, to realize they’re going the wrong way. When he turns to one of them to ask where they’re going, that’s when everything goes to shit as the man at his back clocks him on the back of the head and the world goes dim and watery. Before he can react, the man hits him again and Molly crumples, everything going dark.
