Work Text:

Most of your uni friends spent their weekends out at bars or karaoke; for you, the majority of your Friday nights were spent with Okuyasu. You’d struck up a friendship with him and his gang at school, but there was something about him—his impetuous behavior, his way of being fiercely protective of you right away even though he barely knew you, his ridiculous sense of humor—that drew you to him almost immediately. You started gravitating towards each other more and more every time your group went out for the night—you found that by the end of the evening, you were usually off at a table by yourselves, talking for hours about anything, making terrible jokes and telling inappropriate stories. This slowly transitioned into inviting him over on Friday nights under the guise of helping each other study for classes, but usually with it turning into a night of watching movies or playing video games together, with the excuse that you both studied best when you took lots of breaks to recharge. The night almost nearly ended with the two of you, overtired from hours of laughing and talking, falling asleep together on the couch; some nights you quietly excused yourself, covering him with a blanket as you tiptoed off to your room, but most times you stayed on the couch with him, absorbing his warmth and enjoying the accidental touch of his skin as he stretched out across you and occasionally nuzzled against you.

You’d spent some of this particular evening together baking cookies in your cramped kitchen, laughing as you bumped into each other at every turn, falling over each other as you tried to get into the oven while he flung the fridge wide open, trying to find a snack to munch on while the cookie dough was mixing. His hand has found its way around your waist a couple times, and it seemed like he lingered a little longer than normal; touching was not something particularly rare between you (with arm punches, hugs, and playful hair-ruffling a regular occurrence) but this felt different, as his fingers occasionally grazed the sliver of skin between the top of your jeans and the bottom of your shirt as he placed a hand on you as he squeezed past you. You tried to shrug it off, convinced that you were making something out of nothing—that your meaningless crush on your tanned, broad-shouldered friend was nothing more than that, a silly crush.

It was a stormy Friday night in Morioh, a steady rain pattering against your windows, a slight damp chill permeating your apartment. The TV flickered in your dimly-lit living room, the sound a low hum that hung in the air. You quietly watched the screen as you gently stroked the back of Okuasyu’s neck, as he softly snored away next to you on the couch. He had fallen asleep earlier than usual tonight, tired from a long day of classes and warmed from the hot cocoa and sugar cookies you two had made earlier. He was curled up next to you, his head in your lap and one arm resting on your thigh; you absentmindedly played with his hair and softly stroked his arm while you finished the last of the movie you two had been watching when he first nodded off. As the credits rolled, you shifted slightly and Okuyasu stirred, grumbling unintelligibly, as he stretched and shifted in his spot next to you. He rolled on his back to look up at you and rubbed his eyes. “Oh no,” he said groggily, “did I fall asleep? What’d I miss?”

You chuckled and patted the side of his face. “Pretty much everything, Oku. It’s okay though, I can tell you about it in the morning over breakfast.”

He smiled and closed his eyes again, settling back in. “Mmm, I like breakfast. I want eggs. And toast. And coffee.”

You chuckled at how extraordinarily endearing he was when he was groggy, as you shifted on the couch, gently moving his head off your lap as you sat on the edge of the cushion and moved to get up. “Hey, I’ll go get you a pillow and a blanket and then I’m gonna head to bed. Be right back, okay?”

You felt his hand grab your wrist as you started to get up off the couch. “Stay with me?”

You turned to look at him. “Wait, what?”

“Just…stay with me? I can’t sleep without you here,” he said, sitting up. “S’why I like coming over—I mean, not just so I can sleep!” He paused and looked down at the floor, trying to avoid your gaze. “I—I really like spending time with ya, it’s the best part of my week. It’s just, ya know, extra super nice that you’re so warm and soft…” He trailed off, and sat quietly for a moment. “I just like fallin’ asleep here, okay? So…could you maybe stay?”

You were a little taken aback, but the fact that he trusted you, that he felt safe enough to fall asleep with you, made you feel a warmth in your chest you hadn’t expected. You sat back down next to him and clasped his hand in yours, setting it in your lap. “That’s…really sweet. I like it when you stay over, Oku. It’s nice to have someone else here with me.”

He smiled and a look of relief washed over his face. “I’m just happy to be here with ya.”

“Well…then why don’t you come to bed with me?”

“A-are you sure?” he stammered, suddenly seeming reluctant at the suggestion. “W-we can just stay out here, we don’t have to do that.”

“No for real, come on. Let’s get comfy, this couch kills my neck after a while.” You took his hand and led him to your room, and gestured towards the bed. “I’m gonna go get changed, you can do the same if you want,” you said, rifling through your dresser for your sleep shorts and a t-shirt. “Be right back, don’t go nowhere.”

“I won’t,” Okuyasu said, sitting down on the edge of the bed.

You padded off to the bathroom and changed into your pajamas, quickly brushing your teeth and splashing some water on your face. You didn’t want to leave him alone too long—you were a little concerned that he might back down at the last moment and bolt back out to the living room, and all you wanted was for him to feel like he could be comfortable around you. You came back into the bedroom, finding him still looking stiff and a little panicked, only now he was he just in his t-shirt and boxers. You walked over a placed a hand on his shoulder while you told him where to find a spare toothbrush, hoping maybe he would feel a little calmer about the whole thing once he had had a moment to collect himself in the bathroom.

He came back to bed, and quickly shut off the light on his bedside table. His face and well-built body were softly illuminated by the lamp on your side as he stood at the edge of the bed, seeming uncertain about whether or not to join you. His hesitation to join you was almost charming, and you found yourself gazing at him longer and more affectionately than you intended. You quickly came to your senses and reached over and threw the covers back on his side, patting the mattress. “Come on,” you said with a smirk, “I won’t bite.” He laughed uncomfortably at your poor attempt to make him feel more at ease, and crawled under the sheets and settled in—he laid stiffly with hands at his sides, staring at the ceiling, his mouth pulled into a tight straight line and his body tensed. You reached over to your bed table and shut off the light, then turned over on your side to face him. You stretched your arm out and gave his forearm a squeeze, startling him. “Hey, Oku, you know you can like…get comfortable? You don’t have to just lay there.”

He turned briefly to look at you, then back up at the ceiling. “Oh, I-I’m fine, I’m comfortable just like this.”

You gently stroked his arm, stopping to hold his hand. “For real though, you said you like it here because I’m warm and soft, so why are you so far away from me?” You scooted up right next to him, pressing your forehead into his upper arm. “It’s okay. This is just like when we’re on the couch just a little more…intimate.”

He swallowed hard. “Y-yeah? This is okay?”

“Of course,” you said softly. “Let’s get cozy.”

He rolled over onto his side to face you, and pulled the covers up close that you were both enveloped in warmth and softness. He took a moment to look you over before he reached up to stroke your hair, letting his rough hand come to rest on your cheek as he gazed into your eyes. He pressed his forehead to yours and inhaled deeply, then let out a long sigh. You smiled as you reached up and caressed his face, gently running your thumb along his scar, then tracing along the underside of his sturdy jaw. You stayed like this, hands softly stroking each other’s faces, as you both breathed deeply, the warmth from each other’s bodies beginning to lull you each to sleep.

“I really like this,” he said with a low growl, traces of sleep starting to overtake him.

“Me too,” you said, feeling your body relax under his touch. “I’m so glad you’re here with me.”

He pulled away for a moment, seeming almost like he wanted to say something to you, but instead he closed his eyes and pressed his mouth to yours, the hesitation and uncertainty that had seemed to have been overtaking him just moments ago melting away as your lips met. The kiss was tender and soft, much gentler than you had imagined it would be, and your eyes fluttered closed as he pressed into you, holding his warm mouth to yours.

You let out a small sigh as you pulled away after the kiss, your heart fluttering with excitement, feeling your face begin to flush. He smiled at you sheepishly, his tanned cheeks turning a deep shade of crimson. “Sorry, I hope that was okay. I’d ah, I’d been wantin’ to do that all night and, well…this seemed like a good a time as it was gonna be, ya know?”

“I’m glad you did,” you said, planting a small peck on his cheek and wrapping your arm around him to squeeze him tightly to you. “Let’s do more of that in the morning.”

You rolled over onto your other side, scooting yourself closer to Okuyasu to nestle in as the little spoon, and he practically purred as you settled in. Your back pressed into his muscled chest and you felt the steady, rhythmic motion of his breathing against you. He wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you close, sighing deeply in your ear. “Don’t go nowhere, okay?”

You interlaced your fingers with his, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “I won’t go anywhere, Oku. I’ll be right here with you all night.”

“Good.”

It wasn’t long before you heard him softly snoring, his warm breath tickling your ear, as you slowly drifted off to sleep, thinking of the many morning kisses to come.
