Work Text:

This sucked.

It was october 31st. Halloween night! And instead of getting ready with his group of friend for a night of fun, Luffy was stuck to this stupid hospital bed. Okay, it miiight have been his own fault for fracturing his femur but really, he could just get a cast, some crutches and painkillers and be fully operational! So what if his leg couldn’t move? He could live without it until it healed! But no. His stupid, awesome boyfriend refused to discharge him. ‘It’s only been 3 days Luffy, you can’t get out yet.’ He’d said. Pfft, he’d had worse in his teenage years and had been able to move and do what he wanted in spite of it!

But Luffy couldn’t exactly hide from his boyfriend, even less since they recently moved together. Plus, he knew all of his friends’ places. So he resigned himself to celebrate one less Halloween in his life and sighed as he watched the shadows get longer while the sun started to set.

Said jailer knocked on his room’s door, entered without waiting for an answer and placed his backpack on the ground.

“Still moping I see?” Torao asked. His only answer was a pout as he looked at his boyfriend.

"Want a kiss?"

Now, Luffy was never much for physical affection, Torao being the only exception he ever met in his life. He loves giving hugs to his friends. But cuddles and holding hands and hugs and kisses with Torao were special because they made his tummy tickle but not always. Which is why his boyfriend learned early to ask and that thought always made Luffy's chest warms up because Law would always make sure he was comfortable and happy. He really has the most awesome boyfriend even if he was a tyrannic jailer!

He smiled brightly, he knew it would lightly lift his sour mood of being stuck in a hospital bed while the year's funniest night was going on.

"Yes!" He answered and leaned up, eyes closed and lips slightly puckered.

But nothing came. Neither Torao's warm tattooed hand on his cheek nor dry, thin lips on his. His eyebrows scrunched up and he opened his eyes…

To see Torao's confused face and his hand lifted up with a single chocolate kiss between his fingers.

Soon, that confused look morphed into a smirk as the silence stretched on.

"Never thought I'd see the day you'd put food in second place."

Luffy could feel his cheeks warm up and he laughed between his teeth. "Stupid Torao you should have said so!" He falsely complained and then came the hand he had been waiting for. This time, he looked up in pools of gold and his heart did this thing when he was close to Torao. As if it squeezed real hard. The smirk didn't leave his boyfriend’s lips when they pressed on his own smile, pecking once, twice, thrice and backing up to press one last kiss on his forehead. Luffy couldn't help the giggle leaving him as Torao straightened

"You totally did that pun on purpose!"

"I may or may not have done it on purpose. Can't prove it." The surgeon answered while handing the chocolate to him. Luffy didn't waste any time to unwrap it and throw it in his mouth, moaning at the chocolaty treat.

"You're lucky I'm stuck in bed!" Luffy teased but it made him remember his predicament and his mood dropped as he looked out the window at the setting sun. All his friends were probably starting to dress up by now, ready to go party, gouge themselves in treats and Usopp was probably starting to prepare some of his tricks to scare Chopper, Brook and Nami. Missing it all was torture.

Luffy felt something drop on his waist. He looked down to a paper bag, then up to look at Torao, tilting his head on the side questioningly. He didn't miss the small color blossoming on the taller one’s cheeks.

"There, now stop looking like a beaten puppy." Was his only answer. Luffy fetched in the bag and was surprised to see his pirate costume he wore almost every year.

"You're letting me out?!" Luffy almost shouted excitedly.

"No way." The younger man deflated. So cruel Torao. "You're still healing you over excited-monkey. But I know how much you love this capitalist holiday." Luffy rolled his eyes at that. Torao ignored him. "So I have a surprise." That lifted Luffy's mood a little.

"What is it??"

"It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you. Now, get changed, I will come back in a few."

"Okay!" Torao left the room and Luffy pulled off his shirt to put on his white blouse, red sash, black coat and put the tri horned hat upon his straw hat and wore both at the same time. He noticed the pants and boots weren't there, probably because his boyfriend knew he couldn't put them on with his broken leg.

Once dressed he looked at himself with his camera phone and was satisfied. He could barely stay in place. Then it hit him. Toaro wasn't supposed to work today. Had he been called at the last minute? He did mention Halloween night was always a busy one with accidents caused by alcohol infection…or something like that, yeah. But if he didn’t, that meant Torao came on his day off to see him! Sometimes, Torao was not cruel.

After another fifteen minutes Law came back to his room and the sight of him made Luffy's heartbeat stop AND accelerate. Weird. Torao was dressed with his earlier black jeans and black turtleneck, but what gave the reaction was the ragged cape, demon horns twisting beside his head and fake blood on his hands. He could also see pointed canines and-

"You have a tail!!" Luffy finally exclaimed after his initial gasp. With his golden eyes, Torao really looked like a demon.

Torao chuckled while approaching. "Of course that's the first thing you'd notice."

"It's not the first thing I saw but I can't believe you're wearing it!" Luffy laughed.

"Yeah well, it came with the horns. Plus I can't really put on my mad surgeon costume in a hospital. Y'know, scaring the patients and all that."

"You still put fake blood tho!"

Torao smirked again. "What's Halloween without a little gore? Now," He said while taking the wheelchair from the corner of the room. Luffy seemed to understand and beamed at his boyfriend.

“We’re going for a walk?”

“Something like that, yeah, would be a shame not to show your costume.” Luffy scooted as carefully as possible to the edge of his bed and, with practiced ease, got into the wheelchair. He was pretty much a champion at getting around with it by now. Torao would always say it wasn’t an accomplishemnet people should strive for. Mostly because people shouldn’t be that often hurt. Luffy thought otherwise, of course. It also wasn’t always his fault he got hurt! This time was an exception...

Once they got out of the room Luffy stopped his wheelchair and looked up towards Torao.

“Well, where do we go now?”

“Well, when you want candies, which house do you go to?”

“The… decorated one? Wait. Are we going trick or treating??” Luffy’s eyes sparkled and he could feel his cheeks stretch with how impossibly wide his smile was. He started wiggling in his wheelchair.

Torao couldn’t contain his own smile, golden eyes softening at the sight. “Yeah, but there’s one condition, the other patient rooms are off-limits.”

“Alright!”

And thus started Luffy’s Halloween night with Torao by his side. Starting of course with Shachi and Penguin, who were on duty but as soon as Luffy approached the nurse’s desk with all the ghost and pumpkin decorations both stopped momentarily their tasks.

“Hey guys! Trick or treat!” Luffy asked with a smile and presenting the pumpkin pail Torao had also brought.

“Happy Halloween Luffy!” Shachi greeted,

“Nice disguise Lu!” Penguin complimented. “Gonna spend Halloween night at the hospital?”

“Yep! It’s a surprise from Torao!” Luffy laughed between his teeth, cheeks warming at the thought of how his boyfriend was nice to have organised something like that for him.

Both nurses lifted their head to look at Law with knowing eyes and a smirk on their lips.

“Isn’t he nice?”

“Right? Nice disguise by the way.”

“Shut it you guys.” Was all Torao answered looking away, probably embarrassed. Luffy didn’t know why, it was really nice of him! He should be proud.

“Hey! If I don’t get treats you guys’ll get the trick!” Luffy brought the attention back to him, shaking his pail.

“Aye, aye captain.” Shachi answered and both men fetched candies behind the desk and gave him.

“Don’t you guys have more?” Luffy pouted.

Both laughed. “Come on Luffy, gotta leave some for the others. Bepo’s kids are going to pass soon y’know.”

“Aaaaalright. See ya later guys!”

Luffy waved and rolled away, Torao behind him.

Surprisingly, the man had actually enrolled all of his hospital staff friends into the game. Next, they went through Bepo's pediatric wing. The huge man was even wearing a panda costume! Which thrilled the kids in his care and were wearing halloween disguises too. He played with them for a little while, being a pirate captain and making his crew of small werewolves, vampires, princesses and other monsters follow him to find their next treasure. Aka Bepo’s stack of candies. Once their booty was collected, Luffy and Torao headed to Ikkaku and Clione in radiology, Jean Bart at security and Uni at the hospital main desk.

Everyone had decorated their work space with ghosts, monsters, skeletons and more, making the adventure through the hospital even more enjoyable. Luffy was really grateful for Torao’s effort and the man seemed happy to follow him everywhere, even holding his pail as it was getting full. His demon costume made more than one head turn as the strict surgeon didn’t seem like the type to celebrate such a holiday. And it was the case, if Luffy wasn’t there he would probably be working, skipping on the fun. Silly Torao, he sure was lucky to have him around.

When they seemingly had gone around all of the hospital wings they could go without disturbing the staff, Luffy's pumpkin pail was pretty full. As they got back in the elevator to go on his room’s floor, the young man looked up at his boyfriend.

“Thanks for tonight Torao! I had a lot of fun!”

Torao raised an eyebrow. “You think it’s already over? Can’t be a successful Halloween night without some proper scare, right?”

He then swiped his card on a magnetic case in the elevator and pushed the basement button. What was down there?

Like the rest of the hospital, the whole hallway was lit up when they got out of the elevator. But everything was eerily… Silent. It was a bit cold too.Torao then decided to push him, giving Luffy’s arms some rest. One of the neon flickered and the young man couldn’t help but be a little excited at this adventure. He had never gone to the hospital’s basement despite his numerous trips to it. They passed many closed doors until one was slightly open. On the door was a zombie decoration, which meant there might be some candies from one of Law's friends! Luffy took control of his wheelchair and rolled towards the door.

“Hey careful!” Torao warned out from behind him but the call of more candies was too strong. He opened the door and-

“Woah! We’re in the morgue?!”

Luffy could recognize the wall separated in squares with probably holes and rolling tables behind them. The temperature was even lower in the room. Usopp and Chopper would not believe it when he told them! He took out his phone and took a selfie with the doors as proof. That’s when he noticed one of the doors was open. A slight shiver went through his spine as he finally saw the embalming table with a sheet covering what was probably a corpse.

“Oh shit! Sorry Torao I shouldn’t have entered her- Woaaah!!” Luffy backed his wheelchair as fast as he could as he saw the corpse move, sitting up slowly. Despite his initial scare, he squared up and raised his fists, ready for a fight. ”Bring it, zombie!” He stated.

A snort came from the doorway which made him turn towards it and saw Torao quietly laugh while pinching his nose’s bridge.

“I can’t believe your boyfriend, man.” This time it was the corpse talking. Noya, Torao’s friend, got down from the table, putting the sheet back on it, chuckling.

“I can’t believe him either. Who freaking gets ready to fight a zombie?” exclaimed Torao.

“Well, I wasn’t gonna go without a fight!” Luffy defended himself. Then, the dots connected in his head and looked at the eldest of the room with huge doe eyes. “Torao… Did you just… Trick me?”

“I sure tried, yes. You usually get me, I thought I’d get revenge but apparently even in a wheelchair you’re ready for anything.” The man answered as he got closer to Luffy and knocked lightly on his head in a playful manner. Luffy couldn’t help himself and reached to hug his boyfriend from the side, smiling brightly up at him.

“I am! But I was really surprised! So you did succeed!” He encouraged Torao, squeezing his legs.

Noya came to them with a handful of candy, putting them in the pail. “Nevermind that I did all the work, hmm?” He teased.

“You did a good corpse Noya!” complimented Luffy.

“You surely did.” Added Law threateningly.

“Calm down boss, I know I’ll get my payment later.” Noya raised his hands in a placating manner, smirking. Torao rolled his eyes and thanked his friend for the, fortunately, empty morgue and help with his trick.

After that, Luffy and Law went back to the former’s room floor, booty in hand. They took the opportunity to give a scare to Shachi on their way back, laughing as the man had frozen in fright at the cold hands on his neck while sitting in his break. He had grumbled something along the lines of “I gave the treats why did I get the trick…” and left it at that.

As they got back to Luffy’s room, Torao helped him back on the bed as the evening finally took its toll on the younger’s body. After some painkillers and a change of clothes, Luffy sat in bed, unwrapping a chocolate bar. When no comment came from Torao he looked at him, a teasing smile stretching his lips.

“No ‘junk food before sleep’ advice?”

“What tells you you’re going to sleep?” Torao answered with his own teasing smirk.

“You got something else?” A huge excited smile replaced the teasing one.

“Of course.” The man then went to the slightly outdated room’s TV and opened it with the blu-ray player. He then came back to his boyfriend’s side and took his earlier discarded backpack, dropping its contents besides Luffy.

“Choose your poison.”

“Yaaay! Horror movies!” Luffy exclaimed.

They made short work of picking up a movie, putting it in the player and getting comfortable, him on the bed and Law on a chair. They ate the candies while looking at the slasher movie Luffy chose. After some point, in a slow moment in the movie, Luffy stretched over and pulled on Law’s turtleneck sleeve, the man having discarded his own disguise, staying in his shirt and having replaced his jeans by a pair of joggers.

Torao hummed in answer and Luffy pulled again. The man got the hint and smiled softly as he got up and climbed on the bed, careful of his boyfriend’s casted leg. Luffy immediately snuggled in his side, both of them slotting against each other like puzzle pieces.

“Thank you for tonight Torao, I had a lot of fun. You’re the best!”

“It’s my pleasure, love, you deserve it.” His boyfriend pecked the top of his head.

Luffy took a deep breath and melted into a puddle in the smell and warmth of Torao, as the man on screen got cut in half, organs and blood splashing everywhere.

Yup, this had been a perfect Halloween night.
