Chapter Text
“What the hell?!”
*Hva faen. I glanced at my mother, she smiled half-arsed, in a bit apologetic way. Then she turned her back on me and pretended to be looking for something in the wardrobe. She has always hated all confrontations and my facial expression in such moments, so she has always tried to shirk from it. It pissed me off, I really wanted to walk over to her, turn her to face me, but I stayed where I was, paralyzed and unable to move even an inch. So I repeated my question:
“What the hell, mum?”
“Just what you’ve heard, Kris… Varg”, she quickly corrected herself. “And don’t raise your voice. I have a headache.”
I kept staring at her with disbelief.
“Is it some kind of a sick joke? Why on Earth would we move out? To Oslo? In a month?! If this is a joke…”, I gulped louder than I expected. “…then it’s not funny at all.”
“Varg,” she stated firmly, finally turning to face me. I was looking at her pleadingly. “Try to understand. I just… I met someone. You knew about it. You have met Helge, after all, and you liked him. And he liked you.”
“I saw him once,” I rolled my eyes. “I don’t know this guy, mum! I don’t know shit about him. And now, I’m supposed to live with him!”
“Varg, language!”, she admonished me. I really felt like laughing, that situation was just pathetic. “Besides, I got a better job position in the clinic in Oslo. I’ll be a department head…”
I stopped her.
“And what about me?! Have you ever once thought about me before you had taken this decision?! No. And my band? And Nina…?”, my voice faltered at the end. “Do I have to leave behind my whole life in Bergen just because you met a new lay?!”
“Kristian!”, she hissed, using my deadname. She has always done it, trying to spite me. Nevertheless, I withstood the glare she gave me. “That’s enough. And this is decided. You’ll start your second class of the high school, this is the best time to move out. There are much better schools in Oslo. Still, Helge and I have postponed longer so that you could finish the first class…”
“Oh, this is so thoughtful of you!”, I yelled in an ironic way. My mother sighed.
“Inform Nina and your friends”, she said, completely ignoring my remark. “After all, you’ll be able to see her every weekend and other free days! It’s not the end of the world, young man.”
“Yeah, sure”, I scoffed, feeling the tears of anger filling my eyes. I blinked, unwilling to show my weakness at that moment. “Right. You don’t have any friends anyway.”
“Kristian!”
“And your relationship is more important than mine! How can you be such an egoist?!”, I groaned.
“Don’t you dare speak like this to me,” she snapped. “It’s going to be a perfect test for your relationship. Helge and I, have been travelling to and fro for months. You’ll see if Nina turns out to be faithful to you.”
“Can you even hear what you’re saying?”, I laughed artificially. “How can you speak with such contempt about a girl I’ve been dating for over a year now?”
“I’m not speaking about her with contempt, Kristian. It’s just…”
“You’ve always hater her anyway,” I scoffed.
“That’s not true. I see her as irresponsible and crazy, but it doesn’t mean I…”
“It’s the same for me,” I cut short.
“Oslo is a bigger city. All the concerts of your favourite bands take place there. You’ll see, you won’t regret it. Helge has a son in your age, as you know, and I’m sure you’ll like each other, he also listens to heavy music,” she added as if she wanted to tempt me.
“Fuck this”, I replied and strode to the hallway. I put the shoes on and took the necessary things with me. When I was at the door, I heard my mother’s voice behind my back:
“Where are you going at this time?!”
“I’m going out!”, I replied shortly. “And don’t you dare stop me!”, I added and dashed out of the house.
