Work Text:

Fred yawned and rubbed his heavy eyes whilst the shop lights went out, he locked the door behind him and apparated home.

With it being the school holidays, the shop hours were longer and Fred didn't get home until late at night - most often when you were putting the kids to bed.

The young witches and wizards flooded Weasley's Wizard Wheezes to stock up before the new term, although you missed the support of your husband - you were over the moon with how well his business had taken off.

By fifteen months old, your twin toddlers were fast learners, already walking, talking and causing trouble. Their constant energy had you worn out and exhausted every night but you wouldn't change it for the world, the two of them reminding you of their father who you loved more than anything in the world.

After over an hour of trying to get the twins to bed and the two of them refusing until you cuddled them and sang to them, they had finally fallen asleep in your arms, both clutching onto you - you would've placed them in their cribs and started on dinner for you and Fred, but you were that drained you had fallen asleep with them.

To get himself through the working day, Fred constantly thought about you and his sons: the day you told him the news, your bump growing, the tiny feet kicking from inside your tummy, the sound of their heartbeats, to the day they came into the world.

Despite coaching them to say your name and 'mummy' your boys always dawdled and called out for their dad, often trying to say 'Fred' when they were being fed in their high chairs.

Whenever Nana Molly and Grandad Arthur came over they couldn't believe how much they took after Fred, Molly often had private words with you in the kitchen.

"You're going to need plenty of sleep, dear"

"When they reach their teen years you'll be over the moon that they're off to Hogwarts!"

You couldn't help but chuckle at Molly but she was right - you did need plenty of sleep and if they were anything like your husband when he was a teen, you'd rather have them causing mischief at school than at home.

Appearing in the front room, Fred took off his blazer and shoes, walked into the kitchen your red, yellow and green peppers were left spread out across the chopping board.

Wondering where you were, Fred walked past the nursery and into the bedroom until he realised the night light had been left on.

Entering the nursery, the sight of you and his boys fast asleep melted his heart.

Your ginger-haired sons in each arm, their heads laying across your chest and their tiny hands clinging onto your loose-fitting maternity top as if they depended on it.

Fred didn't know what to do, he wanted to grab his camera to take pictures but he knew how easily these moments shifted, especially when he would leave the room to capture moments like these.

Instead, he stood in the doorway and stared at the three of you, his heart pounding in his chest and tears of happiness forming in his eyes.

Fred moved silently across the room to get closer, the younger twin opened his eyes for a moment but was too tired to stay awake, falling back asleep - not seeing his father smiling at him.

Thankful for not waking the three of you up, he planted a kiss on the dozing twin, lifting him up into his arms slowly and gently so he could put him in his crib.

The older twin still fast asleep tightened his grip on your shirt when Fred took hold of him, after nearly two minutes of trying to pry him from you, the toddler let go, still sleeping, Fred placed him in his crib too.

And there you lay, fast asleep in the rocking chair you were once held in as a child by your parent, night after night.

Fred wiped the falling tears of happiness from his eyes and placed a long and soft kiss on your forehead, making you open your eyes slowly.

You yawned and tried to speak but Fred placed his index finger over his lips.

"They're sleeping" he mouthed "let's have dinner and get to bed"

Following Fred into the kitchen, he waved his wand and the peppers fell apart into small squares, the chilli finally ready in the pot.

"Sorry" you murmured quietly, wrapping your arms around your husband.

Fred smiled and kissed the top of your head, feeling like the luckiest man in the world "don't ever be sorry, tonight has been one of the best nights of my life"
