Chapter Text

“You wanna what?”

“Stay home, alone with the kids.”

“But you hate sleeping alone…” Haru responded, he sat opposite his wife as they ate breakfast on a Sunday morning. Rin had Sora in a highchair, feeding her.

Haru sat with Riku in his own highchair. Sora spat out her food on to Rin's face and giggled, causing Rin to scrunch her nose and wipe her face.

Haru had work trip tomorrow and he would be leaving tonight, it was a four-day trip and he will be staying in a hotel, he usually takes Rin and the kids with him, so they can chill out while he’s working.

But Rin declined, which was surprising to Haru. He had no doubt she could handle the kids without him, even though they were only a year old, and Rin was a wonderful mother.

But there was this one thing, she had trouble sleeping alone, without Haru in the bed with her. Haru is afraid she’ll lose sleep over some PTSD from the cats room. Since they moved in together, Haru had learned how easy Rin slept in his embrace.

He had never really slept alone ever in their relationship, so four days would be something he didn’t think he should worry about, but with Rin; he did.

“Are you sure?” He asked

“Yes Haru, I don’t mind staying home.” Rin answered as she continued to feed their daughter.

“But, you took the days off of work...?” Haru told her slowly.

“Who says I can’t spend the four days with my two favorite people.” she replied sweetly. Haru coughed “Two out of three.”
Rin giggled.

“Ok, if you say so, but what about when you need to sleep?” Haru inquired.

“I think the bed will be fine with just me, but thanks.” Rin answered

“I meant, you never really slept alone, at least not for that long.”

Rin put down Sora's food and faced him “You’re sweet to worry, but I’ll be fine.”

“You’re not gonna do what you did when the twins were new-borns right?” Haru asked, remembering that time of events.

“I was not that bad!” Rin defensively remarked.

“Rin, you got up at three in the morning and watched them sleep for like two hours before I finally brought you back to bed.” Haru reminded her.

“I was up for their morning feeding.” Rin replied.

“It doesn’t take two hours to fed babies, Rin.” Haru stated.

“You don’t know that Sora has a crazy appetite.”

“Oh, no of course I wouldn’t know, I’m only her father.” Haru replied sarcastically with a grin. Rin rolled her eyes.

“I will be fine; you don’t have to worry about me.”

“I’m always gonna worry, but I do trust you, so I’ll say yes.”

“Thank you.”

“For now, if you change your mind, I’ll be packing bags.”

Rin rolled her eyes again and turned her attention back to their daughter. Haru smiled and went back to feeding Riku, who ended up burping in his face after two more spoonful's of breakfast.

As the day went on, Haru spent the day packing for his trip. As well as the three extra bags Rin insisted, he didn’t need because she wasn’t going. After dinner, when it was around 6pm Haru was on his way out, he had the bags on the floor by the door, ready to go. He picked up Sora from the play pen she was in. Rin stood by him with Riku in her arms.

“Bye bye princess.” he said sweetly to her as he gave her a small hug, he then whispered in her ear “Be good to Maman, she’ll miss me too much.”

Rin rolled her eyes after clearly hearing him. Haru returned Sora to the play pen that was in front of him by the window. He took Riku from Rin's arms and gave him a hug like Sora.

After a moment he didn’t wanna pull away. “Hey Rin, can I just take him and leave you two alone?”

“No.”

Haru pouted “Why not?”

“Because I said so, and you have work to do. A baby is a second job.” she explained. Haru frowned and kissed the top of Riku's head “I’m gonna miss you buddy.” he said before he set down in the play pen beside his sister.

Rin watched him as he made funny faces to the kids, them giggling in return. He finally looked up and faced her with a warm smile.

He gathered her in an embrace, she embraced him back tightly. She was going to miss him for the days he’d be absent. “Are you gonna miss your no. 1 favourite person?” He teased.

“What do you mean? My kid is right here” Rin responded. Haru softly grunted in response, then he sniffed in her scent and kissed her temple “I know I’ll miss you.”

“I’ll miss you too.”

Haru finally pulled away to look at her, he smiled and she caught his lips quickly for a soft kiss. He pulled away for a moment because he was certain the kids were watching.

He headed to the door and picked up his bag “Farewell my lovelies, I’ll see you after the war.” he declared as he opened the door. Rin waved as he walked out to the car.

Alas he was gone and Rin shut the door, she turned to her kids and smiled “I guess it's just us, sweetie pies. We’ll be fine, we’re all strong.”

Riku gurgled in response and Sora lurched up to be picked up, stretching out her tiny arms to her mother. Rin grinned and tickled under her chin.

A few minutes later, she had the kids settled on a play mat in front of the couch, where Rin had settled on to watch them. Rin loved to watch her kids interact. Sora was always loud and wanting attention, which Rin found a little overwhelming, but she got used to Sora's energy and always had fun with her daughter.

Riku was the quiet one, he would do strange things when he’s not being watched and he liked cuddles, a lot. But he wouldn’t beg for them. If he was lucky and someone was right by him, he would easily climb himself into their arms and stay.

Rin loved it, she loved to pick him and cuddle him after a long day of work. Sora loved cuddles too, she would scream for them when she wanted.

As she watched her kids, she saw how easy they got on no matter how different they were, Sora liked practical games with plushies that she could move around. Riku liked his ball. It was a small basket ball and he had no basket for it. His favourite game was throw the ball at Papan, it made Sora laugh a lot.

After about an hour, Rin noticed they were falling asleep, Riku almost fell over against the couch til Rin caught him. She picked up and had him against her hip ready to take him to bed, she was about to walk off when she remembered she was going to be leaving Sora alone for a moment. Usually, Haru would take her to bed when Rin took Riku, but he wasn’t here, he was out of town. So, she had two babies and one person to move them into the bedroom. Easy. Rin just decided to carry them both to bed.

She laid them down in their own beds. Each bed was a small white crib with a small pillow and a baby blanket. Sora had a cow plushie that she had tucked to her chest.

Riku had a horse plushie, he wasn’t as close to it as Sora was with hers, but he liked it by his head. Haru went on a shopping spree when they were expecting so when he found really soft animal plushies, he bought one for each of them with a smile and Rin went along with it for his smile.

Rin couldn’t stop grinning as she lay her kids to sleep, their soft sleepy faces made her melt every time she saw them in this state. They were her whole world, them and Haru. Her life would never be the same without them. A life without them would be a nightmare.

Once it was Rin's time to sleep, it was 11pm and she had herself settled under the covers of the bed she shared with Haru in their master bedroom. The room was just down the hall to the babies room.

She shifted and faced the spot where Haru would usually lay. The bed without him felt empty, she hoped Haru was wrong about her having sleep difficulties without him.

Just as he was on her mind, he called. Her phone buzzed from the table by the bed and she picked up happily when seeing Haru was calling.

“Hey.” she greeted.

“Hey, how are you?” he asked softly.

“I’m good, how was the journey?”

“Good, I’m in the hotel room now. How are my offsprings?”

“Sleeping, but they’re fine.”

“Do they miss me yet?”

“No.”

Haru went a little quiet. Rin grinned “Are you pouting?”

“No.”

“You went quiet.”

“Yeah, I'm shoving their gifts out the window.”

“Haru!”

“It was a joke.”

Rin rolled her eyes “What time does work start at tomorrow?”

“Not too early, but I’ll be sleeping soon, I’m pretty beat from the drive.”

“Driving away from your family so hard Huh?”

“Definitely I hate leaving you.”

Rins heart warmed at his sentiment “I hate seeing you leave.”

“I’ll be back soon, how are you holding up without me?”

“Fine, I got them to bed easily with no trouble.”

“Did you stare at them sleeping for two hours again?”

Rin softly exhaled “No.” she answered firmly.

“Just checking.”

“So, you got them gifts, what did you get?”

“It’s a secret.”

“C'mon, tell me.”

“No.”

“Haru,” Rin whined.

“He’s not here right now, can I take a message?” Haru responded teasingly.

Rin narrowed her eyes and whined again “Haru!”

“Very sorry to tell you, your husband has left the building, and he took the surprise gifts with him.”

“Haru, I swear-”

“New phone no Haru.”

“Can I have my husband back now?”

“Ok I’m back,” Haru replied sweetly.

“Very funny.”

“I know right, I should quit and become a comedian.”

“Hmmm.”

“I wanna keep the gifts a surprise.”

“Why, hiding something?”

“Yes, I packed Yuki in my bag.”

Rin snorted and Haru joined her laughter. After a little while of conversation Rin heard Haru yawn.

“Do you wanna get to sleep?” She asked softly.

“Yeah, I think so, will you be, ok?”

“Yeah, I will.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

“Okay, I love you, goodnight.”

“Goodnight, I love you.”

Rin hung up the phone and sighed, it was good to talk to him before bed perhaps it would help her get to sleep without trouble. She got herself comfy ready to sleep.

Alas that didn’t happen, she lay under her covers, on her pillow, her head turned and facing Haru’s empty space. The bed felt nothing but empty. The comfort of her husband’s scent and presence was gone, his scent lingering but it wasn’t enough to help.

She moved, tossed and turned to get rest for a while. She was tired, but not enough to actually fall asleep, falling asleep now felt uncomfortable. She groaned and left the bed; she entered the kid's room. Deciding that they might bring her some peace.

She found them in their cribs sleeping peacefully, their faces always brought a smile to her face. She remained there for a while, staring softly at the little ones. She was exhausted but didn’t want to leave them.

An idea came to her, what if..?? It seemed like a strange idea, but if it worked, it would fine. After debating in her head for a few minutes, she gave in and decided to do it.

She moved her babies into her bed, she laid them down with their plushies. They remained in their slumber, so it was easy for her to slip in between them.

She laid with her back down and had Riku on her leaning left side with Sora cuddled up to her right. She felt peace, and finally fell asleep cuddling her most precious children.

When Rin woke, she was facing her right, she woke to find two wide eyes at her. She smiled and found Sora tapping her nose with her tiny finger.

Rin held Sora’s hand lightly and kissed her little finger, making Sora giggle at the affection. Rin joined her giggles, waking up with her children was one of the purest things Rin's ever experienced. She lightly rolled over and found Riku still fast asleep against the pillows. Rin left a small chaste kiss against his head and turned back to Sora, who climbed onto Rin with her plushie held tight.

Rin smiled as she played a small game with her daughter, Sora lightly moved the plushie against Rin's stomach, making it look like the little cow was walking around.

Rin kept her fond smile on her as Sora played. Rin kept keen focus in amusement to this till she felt a small tug on her arm. She turned over and found that Riku had woken. She smiled at her sweet baby boy, sleeping with them was so natural and comforting, she would never give them up for the world.
