Fax Machines and Trick-or-Treaters

Summary:

Hawks knew it would be a good idea to visit Endeavor on Halloween

Notes:

Hello!

Just a dumb little thing I thought of because I had a cute interaction with a co-worker and a fax machine, and decided to make it Halloween just because.

Please enjoy

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Good Evening!” Hawks bellowed in his best Dracula-type voice as he swooped down onto the sidewalk with his best vampire stance for the group of trick or treating kids.

“Don’t worry kids, that’s not a real Vampire, just a glorified chicken,” Burnin rolled her eyes as the group of kids began jumping around excitedly for the pro hero.

“Maybe so, but this chicken brought candy!” Hawks said, shooting her a triumphant smirk before leaning down and pulling out Hero labelled lollipops for the kids.

“Psst, you get an extra one for dressing up as my favorite hero,” He whispered to a little girl dressed as Endeavor, after a short chat with the parents and posing for a few pictures with the group. “Maybe if you come back later, he’ll be here.” He added, smiling at the way her eyes lit up as she skipped back to her parents.

“Looking good Burnin, how do those not catch fire?” Hawks asked, eyeing her mummy costume.

“Custom made,” She shrugs, “Endeavor is upstairs.”

“Aww, what makes you think I didn’t come here for you?” Hawks asked, feigning hurt while she gave him a look. He was obvious and he knew it but he didn’t care. “I’ll try to get him to come down so you can take a break from candy duty.”

“Yeah, good luck with that,” Burnin chuckled with a wave as Hawks made his way up to Endeavors Agency.

The place was unusually quiet, almost eerily so since normally it was bustling with hero activity. Hawks wandered around, admiring the Halloween decorations. He wondered if Endeavor had anything to do with it or if it was all the sidekicks or admin. Probably the latter. The no nonsense hero didn’t really seem the type.

“Endeavor-san?” Hawks asked, poking his head in through Endeavors slightly open office door but finding it empty. The agency wasn’t that big, he had to be around somewhere, so Hawks kept looking. Only to find the large man leaned over the office printer and grumbling to himself.

“Need some help there, Big Guy?” Hawks asked with a chuckle, causing the Hero to almost jump out of his skin.

“Hawks!”

“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you!”

“No, it’s okay. I was lost in thought, trying to get this damn fax machine to work,” Endeavor said with a huff, looking uncharacteristically adorable with a light blush on his cheeks, paired with what Hawks assumed was a Halloween costume over his hero suit.

“What’s the trouble? Maybe I can help.”

“I need to send this document to Fat Gum Agency, but I pressed on Fourth Kind as well and I don’t know how to take it off.”

“You poor thing,” Hawks grinned up at him as he took a step toward the printer touch screen.

“If you’re going to make fun of me, then you can leave,” Endeavor grumbled.

“I’m not, I promise,” Hawks lifted his hands defensively, “You should be able to just press it again and it’ll come off.”

“I think my fingers are too big for the screen,” Endeavor mumbled.

“Well, when all else fails, just press this reset button and start over,” Hawks smiled as he cleared the screen and pressed the button for Fat Gum’s Agency fax.

“Thank you,” Endeavor said quietly as he placed one page on the glass and lowered the lid.

“Are you sending all of those? You should put them in the feeder,”

“Yes, but they’re double sided.”

“Gods you’re so cute,” Hawks laughed, grabbing the paper off the glass and taking the remaining stack from a blushing Endeavor.

“See this send setting button here? Go in there and it’ll give options for double sided. I suggest this one since it will make them read like a book. The back page being upside down is just confusing.” Hawks explained as he tidied up the stack of papers, placed them in the feeder and pressed the start button.

“Thanks Hawks,” Endeavor said quietly, looking a little embarrassed over the ordeal.

“No problem, glad to help!” Hawks smiled, “Where is everyone anyway?”

“Burnin is giving out candy, the other sidekicks are on patrol, and more of the admin have small children so I told them to go home for trick or treating,” Endeavor explained.

“Aww, Endeavor-san, you big softy!” Hawks said, nudging him in the side lightly, though it just earned himself a glare.

“I like your costume by the way, what are you supposed to be?” he asked as he eyed the ripped-up clothes that the older man was wearing.

“A werewolf. My daughter picked it out.”

“I like it! But I feel like something is missing. What are you not wearing?” Hawks grinned

“Nothing.”

“Oh come on big guy! I won’t laugh, I promise. Please,” Hawks pleaded using his best puppy face and trying not to jump for joy when Endeavor rolled his eyes and rummaged through his pocket to pull out a fluffy wolf ear headband.

“You promised,” Endeavor growled after he had put them on and Hawks had to cover his mouth with his hand to kids his smile.

“I’m not laughing! I think you look really good.”

“Oh... well thank you. Your costume is nice as well. You look very... cute.”

Now it was Hawks’ turn to blush; the man made him feel like a silly school girl most of the time and he couldn’t have cared less. Not when those bright blue eyes focused on him so intently.

“Thanks Endeavor!”

“So, what are you doing here?” Endeavor asked, taking the papers from the machine and heading back to his office.

“Just visiting my favorite hero. Hey, wanna go down and hand out candy?”

“No.”

“Why not? The little kids are so cute in their costumes! Don’t you want to see them?”

“I’m sure they are, but I’m also sure they don’t want to see me.”

“I dunno, I saw the cutest little girl dressed up like you earlier and she seemed pretty bummed that she couldn’t meet you.”

“Don’t make things up just so I’ll do what you want.”

“I would never! I swear she was; you can ask Burnin! Come on, it’ll be fun! I’m sure Burnin could use a break. You gave everyone else a break, it’s only fair!”

Which was exactly what was needed to convince Endeavor to give out candy with him on the sidewalk for the remainder of the evening. Some of the kids were afraid of him, but part of that was just from the sheer size of him. The man was huge, it was hard not to be intimidated by his presence; but more often than not, with a little help from Hawks, the kids warmed up to him immediately, some even asking for hugs. Endeavor would shoot Hawks a baffled look each time, but Hawks could tell he was enjoying himself.

“I don’t think I’ve ever signed so many autographs,” Endeavor said when things had gone quiet and they packed up for the night.

“I told you, more people like you than you realize!” Hawks grinned.

“I’m sure most of them were just being polite because they wanted yours.”

“Maybe some of them, but less than you’d think. Some of them didn’t even look at me! You don't give yourself enough credit, Number One. The people like you!”

“Alot of that is still because of you,” Endeavor shrugged. “You like me and everyone likes you, so by proximity, they’re starting to like me too.”

“Maybe so, but it doesn’t change the facts.”

“Why do you like me?” Endeavor asked quietly.

“You’re my hero!” Hawks smiled.

“I’m serious.”

“So am I! I’ve looked up to you my entire life, idolized you, I wanted to be just like you! You’re the reason why I became a hero.”

“Were you disappointed when you got to know me?” Endeavor asked, not meeting Hawks’ eyes.

“Absolutely not! If anything, I like you even more since I know you’re a real human with real problems.”

“You like me more than that too, don’t you?” Endeavor asked after a long moment of silence and Hawks felt himself blush.

“Am I that obvious?” He asked, though he knew the answer.

“Apparently, but I didn’t know until someone brought it up a few days ago. I’m... not very good with those things.”

“It’s okay Endeavor-san, don’t worry about it. Let’s just pretend you never found out about my little crush and we can continue the way we always do. I’ll be chatty and annoying; you’ll be grumpy and professional and we’ll save lives.” Hawks laughed nervously.

“I don’t think I want to do that...”

“Oh.” Hawks said, worrying that he might have ruined the friendship already with his stupid flirting. He should have known it would make the man uncomfortable! He did know it made him uncomfortable, he just couldn’t seem to control himself around the Flame Hero. “What do you want to do then?”

“I’d like... can I... Would you like to have dinner with me sometime?” Endeavors bright blue eyes stared into Hawks’, filled with nervousness and accentuated by the deep pink blush of his nose and cheeks.

“Wha... really? L-like a date?” Hawks gasped. Of all the things he imagined Endeavor ever saying to him; inviting him on a date had never even crossed his mind as a possibility.

“You don’t have to! I just thought.... forget it, it’s a stupid idea.”

“Yes!” Hawks interrupted before Endeavor could spiral any farther. “I’d love to go on a date with you.”

“Yeah?” Endeavor asked; his lips turning up into a faint smile as Hawks nodded happily.

“Yes,” Hawks smiled as he unlatched the large window exit, “Okay, I’m going to go before I end up saying something stupid and ruin this moment. Call me and we’ll set something up.”

“I will,” Endeavor said, his small smile stretching into the first real smile Hawks had ever seen from him and it made his heart race from how handsome the older man looked. He’d make it his mission to see that smile much more often.

“Good. See ya around, Number One,” Hawks said, lifting himself up to press a quick kiss to Endeavors cheek before soaring out the window with a wave and a smile he couldn’t stop if he tried.
