Work Text:
Walls seemed to close in on anyone who had been in the same spot for too long. It's human nature to want to explore and travel and it foes against that nature to be confined. It was why the idea of prisons was initially found to be a good idea. But they weren't, especially for those who were considered criminally insane. Then it wasn't a punishment more so a challenge.
And (Y/N) (L/N) loved a challenge.
She had never followed rules. It was one of her bad habits according to her partner Hannibal. He had said it over dinner that night but both her and her other partner, Will, knew that he didn't truly mean it. They both knew that Hannibal adored the rebellious side of his girl.
Once caged, Chilton knew that it would only be a matter of time before one of the three tried to escape. Hannibal had his mind games, Will who could put himself into any situation and (Y/N) who had a problem with anyone and everyone. It was only a matter of time after all. But they didn't, all three were model patients of Dr Chilton's and to his own mistake, he grew lax with them and sorely paid the price.
(Y/N) was fast-fingered, he didn't notice that she managed to dislocate her thumb to slip out of handcuffs and retrieve a paperclip from a desk when she was being moved throughout the hospital. It only took seconds and he never question why her hand constantly hurt for a while. It was just one of those things.
It took nearly a month after for (Y/N) to use the paperclip to pick a lock and slip away from her cell. The Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane was dark at night and it's easy to ignore a shadow in the corner of the room. By the time (Y/N) was found missing, she was on a plane to France.
Hannibal and Will wouldn't be long behind her, not with how desperate Jack Crawford was to find Buffalo Bill. She just raised the stakes slightly.
