Work Text:

“Go see your kid.” Eddie gives a warm smile, one the mother returns as she turns to head back to her son’s room.

Eddie exhales. “I’m gonna go see mine,” he murmurs as he starts heading towards the exit.

“Eddie.”

Eddie turns back around to see Buck jogging up to him. “Hey, uh, if-if it’s not any trouble, can I—“

“Come on.” Eddie interrupts, already knowing what he’s asking for as he motions to the exit. Buck smiles weakly and they head out together, saying their farewell to Bobby and Athena who smile after them.

They waste no time heading back to the fire station where they change out of their uniforms, grab their bags, and head to Eddie’s house.

Or, home.

They get out of their vehicles and Buck looks over to see Eddie basically dragging himself towards the door. He looks exhausted and it’s understandable.

“Oh, my boys,” Carla’s voice rings in when they open the door. She walks up to them and checks Buck’s face out, squeezing Eddie’s arm in a worried manner.

“We’re okay.” Eddie assures her. Buck nods in agreement and Carla sighs. “Good. Chris is asleep in your bed. He doesn’t know what happened but he said he wanted to wait up for you but I didn’t let him so I allowed him to go to your bed, if that’s okay.” She explains.

“It’s perfect.” Eddie promises.

Carla smiles lightly and leans up to kiss their cheeks. “You boys get some rest now. I’ll see you later.” She grabs her purse and walks out.

Eddie sets his bag by the door and starts walking in the direction of his bedroom, but he stops when he doesn’t hear Buck’s steps behind him, making him turn to face his best friend. “Hey. You coming?”

Buck shifts from foot to foot and Eddie walks back up to him. He meets his eyes, then takes his hand in his, lacing their fingers together.

“Come on,” Eddie whispers. “Let’s go see our kid.”

Buck smiles warmly, the same smile that’s reserved only for Eddie. He squeezes his hand and Eddie leads them to the bedroom. He opens the door and they look in to see Chris fast asleep on the bed.

“He looks so peaceful.” Buck murmurs. Eddie nods in agreement and tugs him to the bed. They only let go of each other to lay down on each side of the little kid and Eddie slides his arm across his son, finding Buck’s hand again.

The movement wakes Chris and he blinks confusingly, looking from side to side to see both men. “Dad? Bucky?”

“Hey.” Eddie and Buck greet at the same time.

Chris smiles, but he’s still confused. “Are you guys okay?” He asks. Eddie nods, tilting his head to press a kiss to the side of Chris’ head. “Yeah. We’re okay, bud. We’re just—we’re really glad your our son.” He admits.

Buck’s face lights up and Eddie smiles sleepily at him. Buck nods as well, picking his head up to kiss both of their foreheads. “Very glad. Get some rest, both of you.” He says.

Chris giggles quietly. “You guys are weird.”

Eddie and Buck laugh softly, cuddling into their kid’s side as sleep falls over him in seconds once again.

When Eddie’s eyes find Buck’s, he sees the man already staring at him and gives him the same smile. “Stay?”

Buck nods in response and Eddie hums lightly. “I love you.” He whispers. Buck squeezes his hand and reaches across with his other hand to run his fingers through Eddie’s hair. “I love you.” He replies in the same tone.

Eddie leans into his touch, falling asleep a minute later. And soon, Buck follows behind, finally content with his family.
