Note: the Snap didn’t happen, but Tony still wielded the gauntlet, Steve was defrosted earlier too, they live in their lake house

Work Text:

It had been a long day for them, honestly Steve was exhausted after a mission and had decided to pick up his kids on the way home from SHIELD. He hadn’t seen them since he had left a week before, and he missed them, even though they were brats most of the time. He couldn’t help the smile on his face when he had gotten Morgan at preschool, the little girl running as fast as her feet could carry her, just so she could jump on him. Peter and Harley’s pick up from Midtown was less enthusiastic, but they’re teenagers what could they expect from them, they’re not his little boys anymore, though it didn’t stop Steve from hugging his sons.

When he and Tony had adopted Peter after the Stark Expo, they hadn’t thought that having a family was a smart idea, they were superheroes and that alone wasn’t the best environment for children. Steve had only been out of the ice for three years, and he and Tony had only been together for six months at the time. But once they became a family Steve wouldn’t have it any other way. Tony had brought home Harley after the fiasco with the Mandarin, the kid had helped Tony and had been living out of an abandoned garage, his family long gone after a terrible explosion.  Morgan happened later on, their sons had started high school and Tony had wanted a little girl. That was the first time that Tony wondered if they could have a genetic child, Steve thought it would have been impossible honestly, but leave it to Tony to find a way, though Thor helped a lot with his mother’s magic. For Steve that had been a weird year, but the end result had been a little baby that was half his husband and half him.

They talked the whole way home, honestly, he missed this, sometimes his missions were him having to stay in a silent quinjet before going into battle, or hearing the Avengers argue over one thing or another. He should retire, but it’s still too soon after Thanos for that to happen. Tony had recovered, but since they had their kids, well he had taken a backseat to the action as he wanted to watch his kids grow up. Steve wanted the same but with all of the new team members it made it a lot harder to pull away, especially since they were still digging out Hydra cells here and there.

Pulling up to their house, Steve sees that Tony had started raking the leaves, though the man was nowhere to be found, which meant he had given up at some point. Though it could have something to do with Thor’s hammer sitting on top of the cord for the leaf blower. Thor tended to visit a lot, especially if Bruce was here, but leaving the hammer there was an inconvenience for everyone except Steve who is the only other person who could lift it. He went around the car and started unstrapping Morgan from her car seat when a thought occurred to him.

“Whoever hugs dad first gets to pick what we have for dinner,” he said to his kids, who started running at full speed. Peter wasn't using his webshooters Steve guessed that they weren’t strapped to his wrists but his son could just be playing fair, Harley, who had start track his freshman year, was keeping up with his brother, while Morgan struggled to keep up with them. When the kids had made it half way, Steve realized that he wanted that first hug, he didn’t care about dinner, but he missed his husband.

He started running at full speed grabbing Mjöllnir on his way, he felt it pulling which meant that Thor was calling it back, his first stop was grabbing Peter and wrestling his son until the strap of the hammer was wrapped in the belt, just as it lifted Peter off the ground. Steve would have felt guilty if it weren’t for the fact that Peter had the Iron Spider suit with him at all times and saw the armor wrapping around him. Though not all of the way since it couldn’t get around Mjöllnir.

Harley, on the other hand was running at full speed now, he had been stunned at what Steve had done to Peter, but his middle kid couldn’t outrun his supersoldier father, not when he was on a mission. Steve grabbed him by the waist, they wrestled for a few moments before Steve threw his son into a leaf pile and rushed off towards the house. He had lost track of time during the fight to get to Tony that he saw Morgan reach the front door. She was small, but she wasn’t as fast as he was, he picked up speed and made it to the door as fast as he could, reaching his daughter just as she got to the living room. He grabbed her, hearing her squeal as he lifted her, before tossing her over the couch, her laugh was all he heard as he made it to the kitchen smiling.

The moment he caught sight of his husband he put his arms around the man and buried his head in Tony’s neck, taking in the scent of the man he loved the most. Though Tony was a little stiff, Steve wasn’t going to let go.

“Steve, those were our kids,” he said and Steve knew that Tony had seen everything.

“I know, but I wanted the first hug,” he answered nuzzling his face into Tony’s neck before rubbing their heads together.

“Are they still alive,” Tony said as he turned around the best he could, since he had a supersoldier behaving like touch starved panda. “Steve, you sent Peter flying.”

“He’ll be fine,” Steve said just as Morgan’s happy laughter came into the living room, right before she attached herself to both of her fathers’ legs, connecting the three of them.

“Papa, again,” she said and Tony just gave him a look saying that Steve would not be tossing his daughter on the couch.

“Dad,” Harley called out and now Steve wondered if he hurt his son, but as the teenager rounded the corner, a couple of leaves in his hair, the smile on his face meant that he was alright. Harley joined them in their hug, Steve ruffling the leaves off of Harley’s hair.

Just then he heard the sound of metal hitting the porch and Peter running into the kitchen to join them, “Why am I always last, I have superpowers.”

“Yeah, but you’re not Pops and his super everything,” Harley said as Peter joined in on the hug.

“Welcome home,” Tony said with a smile, kissing Steve, and then his kids one at a time.

“It’s good to be home,” he said with a smile.

"So, what's for dinner," Peter asks and everyone just starts laughing, it was definitely good to be home.
