Home is Where the Heart Is

Summary:

Tony comes home from a business trip.

Notes:

Trying to get back into the habit of writing, and so, here's some fluff for you. This is a continuation of a previous story, it was born from whether Tony would do the same thing that Steve did in the other story.

Work Text:

Tony had been on a long business trip to Japan when he finally lands back in the New York, he had been away for three weeks dealing with a collaboration between Stark Industries and an up-and-coming tech company that created something he wanted in on. Mostly because the tech would be helpful for the Avengers and safety is key when it comes to the team, while there he met with workers from the Japanese branch of S.I. and toured the factory there stopping at R&D to see what they were up to there. But honestly, he was happy to be home again, the only reason he had gone in the first place was because Pepper had asked him to, she knew he was the best person for the job when it came to talking about tech with almost anyone.

Getting into his car, because as much as he would have loved for someone to pick him up, he also didn’t want to deal with anyone else, he was peopled out at the moment and all he wanted was to get home to his family and cuddle with Steve on the couch and maybe eat some pizza.

“Hey, my girl Friday, what is everyone up to?” he asked as he drove away from the airstrip, he had landed on farther away from N.A.F. because they were in the middle of servicing the quinjets and so he hadn’t wanted to inconvenience them by landing there.

“Hello Sir, welcome back home, The Captain is at the house with Morgan, Harley is at a school event with friends, and Peter is at the New Avengers Facility working on solvents for his suit with Dr. Banner.”

He couldn’t help but smile, it was such a domestic thing just knowing where everyone was, Peter and Harley would both show up once they were done and ask if he had brought them anything from Japan, they were both obsessed with something so it was easy to make a list of things they would want, but he swore he would only ever get each kid one thing whenever he went on a trip. Morgan was the easiest because she was still obsessed with Hello Kitty, and the Avengers, but he only got her a Hello Kitty plush because anything Avengers related was given to her by the Avengers because each of them were obsessed with becoming her favorite, her current was Spiderman, but she’s biased as she adores her brother.

And then there was Steve, his beloved, he got him some chocolates and sweets, because Captain America looks like the physical perfection of Thor’s family, but he has the worst sweet tooth. Tony always knew to put extra chocolate chips in Steve’s pancakes, his favorite dessert, Strawberry Shortcake, the man was a bottomless pit of energy, and it’s great when they’re alone, but when the kids are around and they’ve all had their fill of sugar, Tony knows to run off to his workshop and putting it in lockdown so that they can tired themselves out and leave him alone.

As he pulled up into the driveway to the house he couldn’t help but remember the last time one of them had been gone for a long time, he also remembered Steve flinging their children around to get to him. The thought put a smile on his face, Steve loved him so much that he would do anything to get to him, and while Tony doesn’t condone what he did, he still loved the big lug just as much. He wondered how long he had with Steve before the boys came home, Morgan usually had a nap around this time of day so he figured they would get a good hour to cuddle before they would have to worry about dinner, though take-out sounded great, he had a craving for pizza and wings, Japan had great food but there’s something about sitting at home with pizza and his family while watching a movie that just made everything better.

There was a fresh layer of snow on the ground as he got out of his car, not far from the entrance of the house was a ten-foot snowman, which means either Scott or Bruce had been here to babysit Morgan at some point in the last few days. He couldn’t help the smile on his face, this was something he never knew he wanted growing up, but it was the best thing that had ever happened to him. All of these people in his life were more family than his own, excluding Jarvis and his Aunt Peggy who had always been there for him, but this was the best thing that could have happened after everything that he had gone through.

He walked into the house through the back door, taking his shoes off in the mud room, he hated tracking water and dirt through the house, it was hard enough to keep it clean with two teenagers in the house, he didn’t want to add to the mess. The kitchen was clean, the only thing in the sink were a few bowls and spoons, he really hoped that Steve fed the kids because he had the tendency of letting them eat whatever when he was left alone with them, Tony usually meal prepped before he left but he had been gone a long time and with two superpowered human beings in the house it was impossible to keep it stocked full of food.

The living room had a full blanket fort set up, inside was Steve reading to Morgan while the television had one of those lofi scenes playing the in background. Morgan was sitting next to Steve as he read each line to her, stopping every once and a while to ask her to tell her about something in the story before continuing. That’s when he realized that he was jealous of his own kid because he wanted to be cuddled up next to Steve, which meant he now understood why Steve had done what he had done the last time he had come back from a mission. Without another thought he rushed into the fort, picked up Morgan and tossed her on the couch before cuddling up in Steve’s lap, book be damned, he wanted a hug from his husband.

“Good to see you too,” Steve said as Tony snuggled into his neck taking in the smell of his husband, he always smelled so good, Steve used Old Spice, which Tony hated for himself, but on Steve it smelled like home.

“I missed you,” Tony answered.

“Did you miss our daughter, because I remember the last time this happened you were angry that I threw her at the couch.” Before Tony could answer the was a squealing laugh coming up from behind them before Morgan climbed on his lap and cuddled into the two of them.

“I like when you and papa do that,” she said, and Tony couldn’t help but smile and pull her close so that he could hug her.

“I missed you too baby girl,” he said kissing her on her head, “how was papa, did he take good care of you while I was gone?”

“Papa had to call Uncle Bruce,” she started before Steve put his hand over her mouth picking her up off of Tony’s lap and tossing her back on the couch.

“Go call Peter and Harley,” Steve said which made her squeal and run off to the phone.

“Do I even want to know,” he asked but instead of answering him Steve kissed him and honestly Tony decided that asking later would be better.

It wasn’t until everyone was in the house, including some of the Avengers where Tony learned that the meal prep that Tony had left had only lasted a week because that’s what happened when three Avengers stayed over, as they all didn’t trust Steve alone in the house without burning something to the ground just to get Tony to come home sooner. It took Bucky, Natasha and Bruce a whole week to keep Steve calm, so he didn’t run off to find his husband in Japan.

“Did you miss me that much?” Tony asked as they got ready for bed.

“I’ll always miss you Tony, I hate when we’re apart for too long,” Steve pulled him close, one hand on Tony’s back, the other was touching his face. “But also, there was a call, and someone sprayed me with something, apparently that made my need to see you stronger, hence the back up.”

“Why didn’t they tell me that part?”

“Because they also worry about us, they call us the mom and dad of the team, so they worry about us all of the time, but they’re just as invested in this relationship working out as we are.”

“They’re our family,” he said with a smile. “Now, was this spray like sex pollen like they have in fanfiction.”

“Tony, how many times have I told you to stop really stories about us.”

“I know, but I like them, it’s fun to see what people think we get up to, they’re wrong most of the time, but sometimes they write things that I want to try.”

“Kinky old man,” Steve said to him before kissing him with everything he had.

“You’re the kinky old man,” Tony countered when they finally pulled apart, “You may look young, but you are not that young.”

“Yeah, but you like it.”

There was a light knock on the door for about five seconds before it burst open and all three kids burst through the door.

“Oh good, you two didn’t start anything,” Peter said, and Tony couldn’t help but groan into Steve’s chest. It had happened once, and only once, Friday usually warned them before the kids showed up. “We’re about to start the movie.”

“Yeah, whatever,” Tony said pulling away from the warmth of Steve, “Let’s watch the movie, is the food here?”

“Yes, and Uncle Bucky is putting in on plates, we had to take the fort down because there’s too many of us now,” Harley said before bouncing on the bed before Morgan launched herself at their feet. “Uncle Clint showed up with Wanda and Vision.”

“So, full house,” Steve said, and the kids nodded “Okay, well get marching down kids.”

They all started the walk down, and while Tony could act annoyed about all of the people in the house, every single one of them was family.

“I hope we got enough food,” he said, and Steve laughed.

“We can order more if we have to,” Steve answered and took his hand, pulling Tony to his side, and honestly it was the best homecoming he could have had.
