Work Text:

Derek sighed as he made his way over to the coffee pot in the break room, making yet another lot of coffee's. It was almost 4 in the morning, yet the team was forced to stay and work their most recent case. It was one of those cases were every moment was critical, where the smallest bit of information could be crucial to solving it.

They had been working on it for almost a week, but they were so close to finding where the bodies were dumped, and Hotch ordered everyone to stay overnight to work it out.

Derek had to actually fight to keep himself awake as he made coffee for himself and Spencer, dumping four packets of sugar in one and 2 in the other. He knew it wasn't the best idea to be having this much caffeine in one night, but there was no other option.

He lingered in the doorway of the conference room and sighed, watching as his co-workers ran themselves ragged trying to solve the case. JJ and Emily were leant over the table, seemingly arguing over something on the case file. Hotch nor Rossi were nowhere to be seen, but Derek figured they were in Hotch's office.

Spencer was also nowhere to be seen, until he walked further into the room and saw the young doctor asleep, head resting on his folded arms. He looked so peaceful as he slept, curls slowly falling over his face with every breath.

Derek felt bad for waking him up, but he knew if they wanted to solve the case, they'd need Spencer to help.

"Hey, I bought you some coffee" Derek watched as Spencer lifted his head and smiled sleepily, eyes still half shut as he reached for the mug.

"Thanks" Spencer said, taking a sip and smiling slightly at the sweet taste. "Didn't mean to fall asleep. I've just been staring at this file for so long, my brain has turned to mush”

Derek chuckled as he sat on the corner of the table, smiling at the way Spencer was trying to keep himself from falling asleep again. If he could, he'd take the kid home and let him sleep on the couch. But he couldn't do that, so he'd settle for fuelling him up with coffee every few hours.

"You deserved a little break anyway" Derek took a sip of his own coffee as he looked down at his friend. "How about you sit back and relax while you drink this, then worry about the case after”

Spencer hummed in thought, looking up at Derek with a soft smile. His eyes glistened with something the older man couldn't quite make out, but was also too tired to try.

"I might just do that" He put his coffee on the table and stood up. "Right after a Bathroom break"

"Thanks for the coffee"

Spencer smiled, leaning closer and pressing his lips firmly on Derek's, before walking away.

Derek's jaw dropped in complete shock and he was sure he was spilling his coffee all over the floor, but his couldn't care less, because Spencer just kissed him. He did it so carelessly too, like it was something they'd be doing for years.

He swallowed and looked over to his colleagues, frowning when he realised no one saw. He was relieved no one was paying attention to see the kiss, but he was also annoyed that the man he had been in love with for years has just kissed him and no one saw it.

He ran a hand through his hair and sat down, taking the file Spencer had been looking at. He did his best to focus, tried to distract himself with the case, and even tried to engage in conversation with JJ to keep his mind busy, but all he could think about was Spencer, and how soft his lips were, how perfect they felt on his. He could still taste the sweetness of sugar and vanilla lip balm on his lips, and his heart raced.

Spencer came back almost 10 minutes later and smiled at him as he sat back down, and all Derek could do was stare dumbly at his friend.

"You okay? You look a little worried there" Spencer raised an eyebrow at him as he chewed his pencil, perfect lips wrapped around it so enticingly, and Derek couldn't take it anymore.

"Come with me" Derek stood and grabbed Spencer's arm, dragging him out of the room and through the hall until he found an empty room.

"What? Is everything okay? Did you figure out something to do with the case" Spencer looked at him with those brown puppy dog eyes, lips pulled into a confused frown, and god he looked so cute.

"No, no this isn't about the case" Derek chuckled, mainly because he couldn't believe Spencer truly didn't know what this was about. "You kissed me"

Spencer looked horrified, jaw dropping so fast Derek swore he heard a crack. "What? No I- When?"

"When you left to go to the bathroom, you thanked me for the coffee and kissed me" Derek could see the way Spencer was processing what he said, and could see the exact moment he remembered.

Spencer buried his face in his hand and let out a noise between a laugh and a sob, turning around and backing away. He seemed to be laughing, but Derek could see the way his shoulders were shaking, could tell he was panicking.

"Hey, Spence, it's okay" Derek reached for his arm and tugged him closer, gently prying his hands away from his face. His heart jolted a little when he saw the tears brimming in his friends eyes, and was quick to wipe them away before they could spill.

"Why are you crying? Don't be upset" Derek pulled the younger man flush against his body and buried his hand in his curls, gently pushing his head towards his chest.

"Because! I probably just ruined our friendship, all because of some stupid kiss" Spencer sniffled, but didn't pull away. Derek ran a hand down his back and frowned, though the younger man couldn't see it.

"Spencer, why would you think that?" Derek gently prompted Spencer to look at him. "I didn't mind it, in fact- I liked it"

"You liked it?" Spencer whispered. "What do you mean?"

Derek laughed, shaking his head unbelievably at the confused look Spencer was giving him. "I mean, I liked it. And I like you"

Spencer actually gasped this time, colour draining from his face so fast Derek was afraid he might actually pass out.

"You like me. As in... like, like?"

"Yes, Spencer. I like like you. I am in love with you, even" Derek smiled brightly, and watched as Spencer took in the information with a confused frown, before doing the same.

"I cant believe this is happening" Spencer laughed, resting his forehead on Derek's shoulder. "If I had of known randomly kissing you was the best way to get your attention, i'd have done it years ago"

"Spencer?" Derek laughed, moving his hand slowly down Spencer's sides until they settled on his thin hips.

"Yeah?"

"Kiss me again"
