First Snow

Summary:

Jungkook sets out to prove to Jimin that there is only one true romantic in BTS.

And spoiler alert?

It’s not Kim Taehyung.

Work Text:

Year One

Jungkook-ah?”

The lump on the bed doesn’t move.

“Jungkook?” Jimin climbs into Jungkook’s single, throwing himself over Jungkook’s side.

Jungkook makes a disgruntled noise.

“Wake up! Jungkookie, wake up.”

“Mmmph.”

“C’mon,” there’s definitely a pout in Jimin’s voice, “wake up, wake up, wake up!”

Jungkook groans, stretching his arms above his head. Still half asleep, he throws an arm around Jimin’s waist, pulling him down onto the bed with him and snuggling into his back.

“It’s too early, hyung,” Jungkook grumbles, “g’back to sleep.”

The idea is tempting, with Jungkook warm like a furnace against his side, but it’s snowing , the first snowfall of the year and Jimin wants to be outside with Jungkook, watching the snowflakes blanket the city.

“But it's snowing,” Jimin pouts, “I wanna go outside.”

“It’s cold,” Jungkook mumbles, “why would you want to be outside when it’s cold? The best part about winter is being all cozy in here where it's warm so you can laugh at all losers stuck outside.”

“They say if you see the first snow fall with someone you love, that you’ll be together forever,” Jimin says, eyes filled with wonder as he stares at the snowflakes falling gently outside. “Kookie! Kookie, look!”

Jungkook, who is snuffling into the blankets, promptly lets out a snore.

“Wake up!” Jimin complains, poking him in the side, “don’t you think it’s at least a little romantic?”

“What is?”

“Waking up to see the snow!”

Jungkook snorts, rolling over to bury his head in Jimin’s lap. Jimin’s hands automatically fall into his hair and Jungkook sighs, cuddling up close.

“Hyung, that’s not romantic, it sounds like torture.”

"It's not torture," Jimin whines.

"The sun's not even up yet, and we're awake, and you want me to drag my warm self out of bed to play in the snow. That kinda sounds like torture to me, hyung."

Whatever,” Jimin says huffily, throwing himself back into the bed with a flump. He rolls over, dragging the blanket over himself as he silently fumes.

Beside him, Jungkook begins to snore.

“Rise and shine,” Hobi singsongs as he knocks on their room door, “it’s time for breakfast.”

Jungkook rolls over with a grunt, hiding his face deeper in the covers. Jimin smacks his thigh and climbs out of the bed, pouting and sullen.

“What’s wrong with him?” Hoseok asks, confused, but no one answers.

Still, it all comes out at breakfast.

Taehyung and Seokjin are already awake and on the couch when Jimin pads into the living room. There's a soft wooly blanket pulled over their laps, and Taehyung's wedged his feet under Jin's thighs for warmth.

"It’s so early," Jimin says climbing across the furniture to press against Taehyung’s other side, “why are you guys awake?”

Taehyung yawns but his eyes are smiling. “We woke up early. I took Jin hyung to see the first snow.”

Jin slaps him on the knee. “Dragged me out of bed at the crack of dawn more like it.”

Still, Jin looks content, if the rosy pink blush creeping up his neck is any indication. “It was freezing.”

Taehyung rolls his eyes but underneath the blanket, Jimin can see their hands intertwine, and on the table are two sets of breakfasts, which means they watched the first snow together hours ago, and Seokjin came home to cook for them both and now they've been sitting here cuddling and holding hands under the blanket since.

They share a secretive look, and then Jin takes his hand back so he can continue playing Mario Kart.

“Wasn’t it too cold?” Jimin asks, unable to stop the sour twinge in his heart.

“Nah,” Taehyung says, “not with Jin hyung’s love to keep me warm.”

Jin honks, a gleeful cackling sound.

“You didn’t have to go all the way out,” Jimin mumbles, “you could’ve watched it from inside.”

“Ah, ah, ah,” Taehyung says tapping Jimin’s nose, “where's your sense of adventure? How would hyung know the depth of my feelings for him if we didn't brave the snow and ice? The cold is no match for my burning love and devotion.”

“It was cold,” Jin interjects, but he shoots Taehyung a small fond smile. “But Taehyung kept me warm.”

They’d probably go on saying more disgustingly cute things to each other but at that moment Jungkook wanders into the kitchen yawning and scratching his belly.

“Hey,” he says, “it’s snowing.”

Jimin gets up and storms right off.

“What?” Jungkook blinks. “Was it something I said?”

Year Two

Jimin wakes up alone, shivering and cold on his side of the bed. Instinctively, he rolls over to curl into Jungkook who always seems to run burning hot. Except when he does, Jimin finds the sheets empty and already cooling on Jungkook’s side of the bed.

Jimin frowns, huddling deeper into the comforters. The clock reads seven am; where could Jungkook be this early on a snowy morning?

They’d stayed up late last night, Jungkook editing clips on his laptop while Jimin sat with his feet in Jungkook's lap, giggling at cat videos on Youtube.

Groggily, Jimin pads downstairs to peek at where the camera crew are outside, setting up.

“Have you seen Jungkook?” He yawns, rubbing his eyes.

Their camera director shrugs, and points up at the mountain.

“He went hiking?” Jimin says, bemused, “in the middle of winter?

He frowns. “That doesn’t sound like Jungkookie at all.”

The air in New Zealand is crisp and cool. Jimin has just finished getting dressed and is coaxing his hair back into something that looks a little more manageable when he hears commotion from the crew outside, and a shout of glee that is unmistakably Jungkook’s.

“Hyung!” Jungkook is yelling, “Jimin hyung.”

Jimin opens the door, shivering when a gust of cold wind blows flurries of snow right in his face.

“Where did you go?” Jimin pouts, when Jungkook bounds up to him, looking like an overexcited puppy. “You left me alone.”

“I went to get this,” Jungkook says, proudly, holding out the largest block of ice Jimin has ever seen.

“What is this?” Jimin asks, bewildered.

He turns the snow block gingerly in his hands, inspecting it from every angle, but doesn’t find anything that would make it particularly interesting. It’s only been a minute but he can already feel the snow melting in his hands, seeping through the thick mitten of his gloves.

He turns to tell Jungkook as much but Jungkook is still staring at him with hopeful puppy dog eyes. If he had a tail, Jimin is sure it would be wagging.

“It’s snow,” Jungkook says, helpfully, “from the mountains!”

“Yeah,” Jimin says, poking at the block. It doesn’t give. “I can see that.”

“You said you like snow,” Jungkook says, peering at him, “I brought you the biggest piece I could find."

The snow is starting to melt, dripping all over his boots, and Jimin shivers.

“Do you like it?” Jungkook asks, and Jimin, feeling a little lost and hopeless, just looks back.

“I... guess?” Jimin says, finally, and Jungkook’s head droops. “I mean, I don’t know what you want me to do with it.”

“It’s for--” Jungkook sighs, his shoulders slumping.  “Never mind.”

When their interviewer asks who’s the most romantic in the group, Jimin doesn’t even hesitate before he points straight at Taehyung.

Jungkook who is watching the entire thing closely, looks monumentally affronted.

“Why do you think Taehyung hyung is the most romantic?” he demands, the moment their mic clips are removed.

Surprised, Jimin spins around to look at him. “Um. Because he is?”

Jungkook snorts, muttering under his breath.

“What?” Jimin says, bewildered, “who else could it have been?”

Jungkook looks at him, and Jimin just stares back, eyes wide and confused until Jungkook sighs, and turns away flushing. “Never mind.”

Obviously he does mind because for the rest of the day, Jungkook is grumpy and reticent. Jimin chalks it up to exhaustion until Jungkook follows Jimin back to his hotel room, slamming the door shut behind them both.

“Why’s Taehyung hyung the most romantic?”

“Huh?”

“That’s what you said in the interview,” Jungkook says, crossing his arms across his chest. It would be terrifying if he wasn't also pouting like a baby. The cutest baby Jimin's ever seen. Jimin resists the urge to coo at him.

“Isn’t he?” Jimin asks, laughing, “why? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong,” Jungkook huffs, throwing himself onto the edge of Jimin’s bed. He spreads his arms out, staring at the ceiling. “I was just curious.”

Jimin flops down next to him, bumping their shoulders. "Why? Do you think it's someone else?"

"No." Jungkook says, "I was just wondering why you thought so."

“I guess I was thinking about the time he took Jin hyung to the mountains to see the first snowfall,” Jimin says.

His voice softens at the memory. They’d flooded the group chat with cute selfies all day -- Jin and Taehyung cuddled up with matching mufflers as snow drifted all around them.

It was magical.

Jimin still gets misty eyed thinking about it.

“What’s so romantic about that?” Jungkook grouses. He plucks Jimin’s phone from his hand, scowling as he pulls up the photo of Jin and Taehyung’s backs, nestled against each other against the white background.

“Look at this! Jin hyung’s all cold and wet now. It’s not like Taehyung hyung went up the mountain to get him snow so he could stay warm and cozy inside—”

“That’s not the point,” Jimin frowns, pulling his phone back protectively, like the picture might hear Jungkook’s criticism and get sad. “The point is to see it together. To herald in the new year with the person you love."

He glances down at the photo, Jin leaning in to kiss Taehyung sweetly on the cheek. “It’s like a promise. You’re saying you’ll be together for every new beginning, and the start of every new year.”

“Oh,” Jungkook says quietly.

Jimin looks wistful. “It doesn’t mean anything if you can’t see it together.”

Jungkook looks at the longing expression on Jimin’s face and doesn't bring it up again.

Year Three

“Wake up,” Jungkook says, shaking his arm.

Jimin groans, burrowing deeper under the covers.

“It’s too cold to be awake,” he mumbles, voice sleep slurred, “go away.”

Jungkook is relentless, hauling him out of bed by the elbow. “C’mon hyung, get dressed, we’re going out”

Jimin pouts, rubbing his eyes and yawning. “Jungkook! It’s our day off and it’s cold! I wanna sleep in!”

He turns his puppy dog gaze on Jungkook and although Jungkook’s expression softens, he doesn’t budge. “Nope. No way hyung, we’re leaving now.”

“But I’m cold,” Jimin whines. "Why would you drag me out of my warm nest on a day we don't even have to be up till noon?"

Still, his complaints fall on deaf ears because Jungkook only bundles Jimin up in two cashmere sweaters and a padded goose-down jacket, before he stuffs Jimin into the car.

Jimin falls asleep on the car drive there, lulled by Jungkook’s soft acoustic playlist and the warm wooly blanket Jungkook tucks around him once he climbs in.

By the time the car comes rumbling to a halt, Jimin blinks open to the sight of the sun rising over the Hangang, soft morning light just spilling over the fresh white snow.

“Wake up Jimin-ah,” Jungkook murmurs, and Jimin feels a warm arm settle against the back of his chair, cradling his neck.

“Where are we?” Jimin yawns, obediently holding still so Jungkook can pull on a pair of woolen mittens for him and tuck his hair beneath a thick fur cap.

“It’s a secret,” Jungkook says mysteriously, and refuses to say anymore, even though Jimin whines.

“Are you going to murder me and hide my body?” Jimin asks, shivering when he pushes the car door open and the bitter wind bites at his cheeks.

“Probably at some point,” Jungkook says, with a smile, “but not today. C’mon.”

“Jungkookie,” Jimin whines, leaning into Jungkook’s side as they trudge forward, his boots making deep indents in the snow.

“We’re almost there,” Jungkook coaxes and Jimin sighs, looping his arm through Jungkook’s and obediently following him.

"We're here," Jungkook says when they finally make it to a quiet little grove. The sun is pulling clear of the horizon now, lighting up the sky in hues of pink and orange.

“Wow,” Jimin breathes.

Snowflakes drift lazily in the breeze, getting caught in Jungkook’s hair and eyelashes.

“Happy new year hyung.” Jungkook’s smiling, pulling Jimin in by his scarf so he can dust the snow out of Jimin’s hair, his hands infinitely patient.

“It’s… it’s the first snow,” Jimin says, with a wet laugh. “It’s the first snow of the new year.”

Jungkook’s arms are warm where he wraps them around Jimin’s waist. “I guess that means you’re stuck with me.”

He leans forward, and the tip of his nose is cold when he nuzzles their noses together. “For this year, and every new beginning after.”

“Kookie,” Jimin breathes and when Jungkook leans in, gently fitting their mouths together, Jimin feels a rush of happiness spread all through his body.

“I was wrong,” he whispers when Jungkook pulls away to smile at him, his eyes sparkling. “You’re definitely the most romantic.”
