As the Channels Turn

Summary:

A year after DJ Indigo-go joined the station, influence from the head office is set to derail all of their hard work.

Will they be able to overcome this obstacle in the month they’ve been given?

Part two of the DJ Indigogo Universe.

Notes:

This is the companion playlist with cover. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7bI7JgMNYT9pPUVjkepa61?si=VGMMBgcTTNWh7bgecjA5rg

It’s very eclectic.

Some things in the story will make more sense reading the DJ Indigo-go and the Radiobuzzkill.

I’m glad I am glad I got this completed. I had this idea just before the end of October and it took longer than I anticipated.

There are a few Easter eggs in here, kudos if you spot the Canadian ones.

Thank you to elliebear for permission to use her head canon.

Work Text:

“I’m just reiterating, this wasn’t my choice, you know higher ups...but it’s an all or nothing situation now.” The nasally voice intones over the phone.

Wallace sits forward, smacking down Veronica’s hands as she gesticulates wildly in protest. “So, let me get this straight. After a year of expansion, renovations, and total revamp of the stations, someone at “HQ” has decided we get rid of two people or the whole office closes down?” Wallace furrows his brow. “I’m not sure how that makes any…”

Veronica jumps up and away from Wallace as he tries to clamp his hand over her mouth. “BUT! But, but…”

“What Veronica is so eloquently trying to say,” Logan shoots her a look, “is that we have single handedly increased listeners forty percent, and established an outreach program for younger kids to learn the business. While the station expanded and renovated. Not to mention we are starting a podcast channel on True Crime.” Logan hasn’t moved a muscle from his chair, but everyone can see the wheels turning in his head. Whether it's to figure this out or how to hide a body is another question.

Since Veronica’s debut on Sirius XM with Beastie Boys, and her subsequent departure, Logan and Wallace gained popularity. For both the station and themselves. They traveled up and down the coast hosting shows during surfing events and bike racing. However, fans were clamoring for more of the battle of the DJ's that sparked between Veronica and Logan. Much like the sparks between the two of them.

After two months of dating Logan, and being worn down by Wallace, she took a leave of absence from her day job. While focusing on the station, Veronica found she had a knack for weaving around any demands by the FCC lawyers, while maintaining her channel and gaining a dedicated following. The station boomed overnight, despite the fact that they are a small station. The smallest in the United States in fact, something that the Senior Vice President Stosh Piznarski never lets them forget. An SVP whose biggest achievement was a "popular" show on NPR about “cutting edge” bands. And by popular that meant the show had a fan base of 200. Mostly stoners, but “The Stosh” (as he liked to be called), lucked out on a quick expansion, knowing the basic workings of satellite radio, and an innate ability to suck up.

Wallace calls him Piz. Veronica calls him “The Douche” behind his back, Stosh to his face. Logan generally ignores him.

Which is why there is silence on the other end of the phone because Stosh “The Douche” Piznarski, forgot what Logan’s voice sounded like. They hear papers shuffling and some hurried whispering. To whom he is whispering they don’t know because they were not aware of anyone else on the call.

“Excuse me!” Logan stands up and leans over the phone speaker. “If you are quite done with your private party, we were discussing how the three of us singhandledly increased profitability during a merger. Not to mention sponsors, philanthropy. In. The. Past. Year.” His fist pounds on the imported desk that “The Stosh” had insisted they include in their generous budget, just six months ago. Made from recyclable something, that cost the equivalent of one of their salaries for two months.

“Uhhhh...yeah. So. Logan? Hi buddy! Like I said, it's out of my control. Look, I have to jet. I can table this with HQ, fooooorrr a month? Maybe a bit longer. If you come up with something...hey, Ronnie? Didn’t you do something with finance? Managed petty cash? Balanced books?”

“Lawyer is the word you are looking for “The Dou...:”

“Anyway, sure Piz, sure. We'll let you know. Bye!” Wallace hangs up, and falls back into his chair balling his fists into his eyes. “You know. When I roomed with him in university he was not this big asshat.”

Logan starts pacing, sits and starts scribbling notes. Veronica is red faced and stewing.

“Ok. So…two people. Did we hire any temps?" Wallace licks his lips and glances between the two of them.

"Temps? No. The Douche isn't interested in people that don't register on his radar." Veronica leans forward with her head in her hand. "I can't believe I let both of you convince me to give up my real job for this."

Logan's head pops up, his eyes narrowed glaring at Veronica.

"Excuse me? This? You mean my full time job? My sincere apologies, Veronica. Please beg my pardon as I take leave from your majesty." Logan pushes the chair back and storms out.

Veronica stares at the empty seat before sighing and walking out of the room, leaving Wallace alone.

"Sure guys. No problem. I can tackle this issue by myself. It's not like our jobs are on the line or anything. No worries." He yells purposefully out of the door, but no one is there to hear him.

~~

Three days pass and often the only sound heard is Wallace banging his head on his desk. A lone coffee being brewed. There are no passive aggressive comments between the two drama queens in the halls, or on the air. Wallace, having had his fill of lackluster stats for two days, orders a meeting between the three of them. They don't acknowledge his entry into the room, both focused on their laptops blocking each other from the others view. He's knowingly late.

Wallace rolls his eyes, and drops his hands onto the table. "Hi Wallace? How are you? Haven't spoken to you in three days? Been up to anything? Thank you drama queens for asking. As a matter of fact, no I'm not good. I'm exhausted. Why? Because I have spent the last few days trying to figure a way out of this hole we find our station in." He huffs and drops into a chair, and holds up a hand when they both are about to speak. "Nope! Nuh, uh. My turn. You both forfeited your right to input when you had your temper tantrums."

Neither speak, but they do have the ability to look contrite.

"What I have decided is we go back to what brought the channels together here the first time," Wallace levels a glare at both of them, "not to mention you two. We are going to host a battle of the channels." He shuffles papers and slides one across to Logan and Veronica. To share.

"Here is what is going to happen. Starting tomorrow and for the next four days, we are going to ask listeners to tweet word suggestions for each letter of the alphabet. Then we, sorry, I choose the word and you both have to come up with a song that has that word in the title. In twenty four hours. After you play your song, I will announce the next word. We'll call it the "Alphabet Challenge", something simple that both of you can understand."

He pauses for the reaction but all he gets is one passive indifference from Logan and righteous fury from Veronica as she raises her arms.

"Nah ah. Still my turn. Starting next week you both play your song, one a day for thirty one days, obviously some letters will need to be duplicated...at my discretion. Listeners can vote for their favorite song by tweeting to me which forces everyone to tune into all of our shows for the word of the day, and the respective songs. That brings us to just over the month Piz (Veronica mutters douche under breath. Logan continues to look bored) promised us. I happen to know he will be on an executive retreat in the Muskoka's that last week and doesn't get back until after our challenge ends."

Wallace pauses again waiting for the outburst that surprisingly doesn't come.

"I figure that we need to bump listeners, advertisers as well as subscriptions. Similar to last year during the Beastie Boy special. We just have to hope that more subscribers renew after the free month trial. This has already been signed off on and advertising will be ready for next week. To give you each some input, Veronica you can choose "A", and Logan you choose "Z"

"Anger." Veronica grumbles.

"Zenith." Logan says as if it is a word in his everyday vocabulary, gives a tight smile to Wallace and stands to leave. "If you will excuse me."

Veronica busies herself with non-existent fluff on her silk shirt while Wallace sits slack jawed at the chill left in the room. She blinks and starts to pack up.

"Whoa. Can we talk about whatever is happening? Or not happening? Now is not the time for you two to… to…" Wallace waves his hands around, "that. Mr. Verbose has been reduced to one word conversations. I haven't heard him this quiet since Piz was in the station trying to convince us to do a special on that surf band in Neptune."

Veronica looks up and shrugs. "He won't talk to me either, or return my texts. So, I will do your alpha challenge, then head back to work. I mean real work, lawyer work. With me gone it's more likely The Douche will be satisfied."

"Satisfied? I don't understand."

"Two months ago, or three...The Douche had come into town for that award ceremony we all thought was fake? He told me we all were going as his guests, but when I showed up he was alone. At the bar with a drink waiting for me. Just me. I refused, and walked out." She stands up and slings her bag over her shoulder. "After that it has been passive aggressive comments, 'losing' forms, and straight out ignoring me. You heard him at the meeting today. A book keeper? He knows I'm a lawyer."

"Huh."

"Yeah. And him?" Veronica juts her chin up and towards where Logan walked out. "He thinks I don't respect him, that I don't take our relationship seriously." She rolls her eyes. "I mean, I gave up my job to see him more."

"Vee…"

"Spare me. I heard it all from him. But here we are, a year later and we are about to be shut down because some dick in New York thinks he's all that and over spent during expansion on stupid over priced tables made from recyclable milk bags."

"But…"

"Wallace, it is ok. I will be ok. So Logan and I didn't work out. Or this job. Both were great experiences. Anyway, let's focus on this challenge so that you and Logan can keep this station open." She kisses his cheek and strolls out.

"Why am I always left alone here to figure things out?"

~~~
It was appropriate that 'anger' was the first word as it was on simmer all week leading up to the first day of the Alphabet Challenge. Small bubbles but nothing really breaking the surface. Veronica would leave out Logan's almond milk on the counter. Overnight. Logan would shift her roll mat over 2 inches.
Wallace will forever be late if he continues to run to Whole Foods for replacement milk and readjust Veronica's mat every morning. He just hopes this challenge will fix more than the station's problem.
~~
"Hey everybody! Welcome to day one of our Alphabet Challenge! Today's word is 'anger'. DJ Indigo-go won the coin flip with MC Renegade, so she goes first. DJ Indigo-go, take it away!"
Veronica presses play on the queued up song and begins the month long rivalry.
Day one sees the fans listening to Don't Look Back in Anger by Oasis with Logan following up with St. Anger by Metallica.
There is still silence in the hallways after the first week, but the two seemed to put the fight on hold. Wallace uses his new found time in the morning meditating to maintain his sanity.
"'Fight' along with us as we tackle day eight. Keep the votes coming in and ideas for words!"
Fight For Your Right - Beastie Boys played by MC Renegade
Fight Song - Rachel Platten played by DJ Indigo-go as she shadow boxed in front of Logan's office.
"Please don't thank me for day nine, your votes are 'Gift' enough."
The Gift - INXS played by DJ Indigo-go
Killing Me Softly With His Song - Fugees, Ms. Lauren Hill played by MC Renegade
Laughter fills the stations for the first time in weeks as all the doors fly open. Wallace watches as Logan and Veronica catch each other's eyes for the first time since the call with Piz. Logan gives a bow as concession to Veronica's choice of Roberta Flack then leans against the wall. She flushes pink, nods, then returns to her booth.
Wallace mutters "about time" before shuffling off in search of a coffee. Logan stares longingly after Veronica, before turning back into his office.
"I am 'Kissing' the ledger as we had an uptick in votes yesterday! Keep them coming for our DJ Indigo-go and MC Renegade as they play through the alphabet. Welcome to day fourteen."
Kissing Rain - Roch Voisine played by MC Renegade
Kiss - Prince played by DJ Indigo-go.
Wallace isn't sure, but he swears he sees Logan blow a kiss toward Veronica as she walks towards the kitchen.
"I would be telling you all 'Lies' if I said day fifteen doesn't bring us to the halfway mark of this challenge. So sit back and enjoy a S'kist as we continue on our musical journey."
Lies - Thompson Twins played by DJ Indigo-go
Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac played by MC Renegade
"There is no 'Mistake' on day sixteen votes are pretty even between our two favorite DJ's (aside from me of course). Do you like MC Renegades ability to dig up some rare finds? Do you like DJ Indigo-go's eclectic variety? Vote your favorite to make sure they win!"
Mistakes - Loud Luxury, Cat Dealers played by DJ Indigo-go
Beautiful Mistakes - Maroon 5, Megan Thee Stallion played by MC Renegade
"Hey Wallace!"
Wallace looks around. "Who me?"
Veronica rolls her eyes. Really. He's the only Wallace she knows. "I thought this was all based on songs during the challenge and not the DJ themselves."
"Well, really my introductions are a little tongue in cheek, but of course listeners are going to be swayed a little by who their favorite is."
"Hmmmm, ok so I was thinking…"
Logan pops his head out of his door. "Are we having an unscheduled meeting...or is this private for just you two. I know there is a trend lately to make decisions without my input." He's really put off by the whole Veronica deciding she would sacrifice herself to appease the tool in New York. And that she was tricked into an almost date with him. It's like the past year never happened. Like they weren't talking about moving in together.
"No, no...but since I have you both here...and talking...we did receive one new sponsor: S'kist. Subscriptions are way up, so hopefully they renew." Wallace looks apprehensive.
"Cool, cool...did S'kist happen to drop off any freebees?" Veronica is already halfway to the kitchen as she asks. "Yes? OK thanks!" She's rounded a corner before either of them can say anything.
"How are things going between you two...have you…"
Logan purses his lips and turns toward his booth. "Thanks for the update Wallace." He closes the door, and Wallace figures that's his answer.
~~
"Let's get real for a minute folks. I am having 'Nightmares' that no one else voted and we were left with a tie. They are bad and leave me cold and shaky in the morning, so please don't let them come true and continue to vote."
"Zero 'Risk' to vote on our challenge, or to subscribe to Sirius XM. Call now!"
Risk - Metric played by MC Renegade
Risk It All - The Vamps played by DJ Indigo-go
Sex. This was the next word.
Wallace had simultaneously looked forward to this day and dreaded it. Sooo many songs, by so many artists and he wondered if it would invoke anything between the two. He knew they had moved a little slow in the beginning; trying to feel out the co-worker/romantic partner dynamic. Being on different channels they could arrange to work similar hours so they usually arrived and left together. On off days, Wallace would try to be around to grab lunch or late dinner with one of them to catch up.
From what he gleaned, they were happy, ridiculously so. While Veronica had a hard, no nonsense demeanour, Logan's whimsy, in his weird stubborn ways, seemed to balance her out. And she was able to get him to adapt to new situations. She had likened it to a reed. Dried out they wouldn't bend and snap under pressure. Having the ability to see things differently allowed Logan to bend more easily to situations that came up at the station.
It's why now almost four weeks later, he continues to be puzzled at the two of them and their equally stubborn stances to both their work and love lives.
"Here it is folks. Let's talk about 'Sex'! I received so many people requesting this word that it would have been a crime not to include it. Bringing in day 22, DJ Indigo-go.
Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic - The Red Hot Chili Peppers played by DJ Indigo-go
Sex Type Thing - Stone Temple Pilots played by MC Renegade.
And Wallace got to watch Veronica complain that the heat got turned up by corporate (she was always cold and they controlled their own heat) and Logan wandering out carrying a sweater that Wallace had never seen before.
"Can you believe we are on day 23? It will 'Suck' when I don't have these daily countdowns any more."
Suck My Kiss - Red Hot Chili Peppers played by MC Renegade
Sucks to Be You - Prozzak played by DJ Indigo-go
Wow. Back to back RHCP...must be one their minds because of their just announced world tour. Nothing to do with how many of their songs have to do with sex.
"'Take' my breath away, so go easy on me. That sounded better in my head. Ok, goobered that one. Day 24.
Take Me To Church - Hozier played by MC Renegade
Take on Me - a-ha - played by DJ Indigo-go
The looks were getting smouldery again to Wallaces trained eye. More smiles to each other, and he swears there have been some fingers brushing against arms.
"'Truth' be told, we have one week left."
Truth Hurts - Lizzo played by DJ Indigo-go
Policy of Truth - Depeche Mode played by MC Renegade
~~
"Hey Piz….yes I am....no we haven't started packing. Uh huh. Yes I hear good things about the Muskoka's." Here Wallace shrugs and makes a face. He's never been and given how far away it is, he never will. "Have you been….yes, Veronica is still here. No, she has not gone through petty cash to find savings...that's not how it works." Seriously, this guy? "Have you been listening? No. Huh. No I…..just thought you would turn in once you saw numbers…..ok. Ok. OK! Piz?" He hung up.
"Douche."
~~
"You have no excuse not to vote today, day 26 'Unless' you are having surgery, and even then the surgeons should tune in the surgical suite.
Unless It Hurts - Galantis played by DJ Indigo-go
Unless It's With You - Christina Aguilera played by MC Renegade
He knows he heard sniffles coming from Veronica's booth. So he braves things and knocks.
"Come in" says a warbly voice. "Heh Wallace. What's up?"
"It's been a minute since we spoke. How are things? You aren't still planning on abandoning us? Logan?" He's hedging that she's a little emotionally vulnerable right now that he can squeeze more information out of her.
She puffs out a long sigh as she wipes her tears. "Wallace…"
"Look. I get it. You've had a less than stellar track record with guys. Who's that guy who is in security, but thinks he is training for the FBI? Then the one that hid drugs…"
"Ok! Ok I get it. I suck at relationships. Case in point." She gestures between herself and supposedly the direction Logan sits. "I may have had a knee jerk reaction to, well, everything.
"Logan isn't them. He's a great guy. A little stickler on audio equipment placement, but a good guy. I wouldn't have let you go on so long without knowing so. He's been good to you and for you. I thought things were progressing? For a normally talkative guy, he's been quiet these last few weeks."
Veronica puts her hands on her knees before standing up and walking over to Wallace. She grasps his forearms and looks up at him. "It's me. My knee jerk seemed to insult his profession and imply he tricked me somehow into quitting what was quickly becoming a soul sucking job for me. I'm beginning to wonder if I am the common denominator in my failed relationships."
Wallace rolls his eyes."Since you were in them, yes you are a number...but not the reason they failed. Just talk to him. At this point I would rather be moving your roll mat back every morning because it was something between you two." His eyes go wide.
"My what?"
"Nothing! Gotta go! Talk to him."
~~
"Four more days until we declare someone 'Victorious'. Get your votes in."
Victorious - Panic! At The Disco played by DJ Indigo-go
Victorious - Divide played by MC Renegade
"I want you to 'Want' to want me to declare someone the winner in three days."
Want To Want Me - Jason Derulo played by MC Renegade
Everybody Wants to Rule The World - Tears For Fears played by DJ Indigo-go
"I have nothing, except to say one of our DJ's *cough* Renegade *cough* drove an obnoxious yellow 'X-Terra' growing up. I can confirm that on day 29 of our challenge, it is still in storage."
Come Together - X-Terra played by MC Renegade
I Like The Way You Move - X-Terra played by DJ Indigo-go
Laughter breaks out again between the booths. Wallace smiles having picked the word on purpose knowing Veronica secretly loved their day trips up the coast in his yellow monstrosity.
He sees them sneak into the stairwell during a break.
"To be honest, I 'Yearn' for tomorrow when our Alphabet Challenge comes to an end. And just in, Sirius XM is offering a 15% discount on all new subscriptions for anyone that signed up during our challenge."
Yearnin' - The Black Keys played by DJ Indigo-go
Yearning - The Trews played by MC Renegade
The offer on the table makes Wallace excited as they wouldn't be offering this unless there was good news in store. It also means that the head office has seen that two large local companies had signed up to be sponsors. He had heard it from another SVP while Piz was at the retreat.
Jerk.
~~
"Today is it. It is the 'Zenith'. Day 31 of our Alphabet Challenge. Thanks to all who tweeted, emailed, voted, subscribed and played along with our amazingly talented DJ's.
Xenith - The Zenith Passage played by DJ Indigo-go
Under Zenith - Our Lady Peace played by MC Renegade
The last song plays and things go quiet for a minute. Then shouting, whooping and cheering can be heard from their floor. Logan and Veronica come out with smiles that Wallace realized he had missed this past month.
Wallace flops down onto a bean bag chair he swears they paid six hundred dollars for under the reign of Piz. "That's it guys. We did all we could do, so the rest is up to head office in New York."
"When will we know?" Veronica circles the chair and sniffs the air before scrunching up her nose. "That smells like stale farm sweat."
Logan chuckles as he moves over to help Wallace up who has become stuck in the farm sweat chair. "I know someone who works in their IT department, well heads it up, and they heard some positive things during a management meeting two weeks ago."
"Hmmm. Was Piz in that meeting? I spoke with him while he was on his way to the retreat and he didn't acknowledge anything. Didn't let me get a word in about our month either." Wallace flips through a purple folder holding various pages. "I was surprised as we were his "baby" last year, taking credit for the popularity of the show and the expansion of the office." He glances quickly towards Veronica, who catches it and shakes her head sharply.
"Well I was just surprised that he was jetting off on a retreat and in the same breath talking about shutting us down. I guess different budgets?" Veronica rolls her shoulders. "I admit, I had fun with this. And," she looks down to the floor, tapping her nails on a nearby desk, "I am truly sorry.
I was so out of line about, well everything I did and said. It felt like the rug was pulled out from under me, too many things changing, good and bad." She looks over to Logan with a small smile. "My brain just started playing what if and the next thing you know I've imagined being a kept woman locked up in a closet, barefoot and pregnant." Logan quirks his eyes at her and raises a hand to his side.
"What the f…"
"I know right? I didn't get where my mind was going, but it went and I spiraled. By the time I pulled myself out, I was invested in being stubborn. I owe you both so much and I did a shitty job of showing it. Again, I am sorry."
Logan smiles at her and takes her hand, pressing his lips to her knuckles. "What's odd is that my contact made it sound like he wasn't really aware of A) what we were doing, and B) how well it was going." He looks around for eavesdroppers. "Then again she always makes it sound like he doesn't know what's going on."
"I am happy how things went, and even if we have to say our goodbyes to the station, I am happy with how we went out." Wallace surges on them, pulling them both into hugs. "Let's go for drinks."
~~
The next few weeks are a flurry of activity for the trio. They learn that their challenge was a hit and there are designs to roll out similar events throughout the year at other stations. While everything is satellite, people do still have repore with each other when they work in the same space. Any thought of closing their small station is gone.
In fact, they learned they were never really in jeopardy. Once some others in marketing and finance looked closely, they saw where mistakes were made in reports. This didn't sit well with anyone, and a special visit was made out to speak to the three to ensure they were sticking around. Incentives were offered and those largely went to the philanthropy projects they had going. Logan and Wallace secretly had some diverted to pay off half of Veronica's school loan.
Veronica finally agreed she wouldn't end up in a closet, and that paved the way for her and Logan to take the next step in their relationship. Cohabitating. She moved into his place for the time being. Getting somewhere bigger with more space was put off, until a future date. Wallace knew this was due to Veronica's trigger shy attitude. Logan was more than ready to put a ring on it and call it a day.
Veronica compromised and they bought a dog together. They named her Pony because she was so tall you could put a saddle on her to ride. Well a small child could anyway.
Wallace met a former co-worker of Veronica's, Shae who was a no nonsense lawyer in the courtroom, was a wonderful outgoing woman who loved basketball as much as Wallace. In the weeks since they met they could hardly be separated.
And Piz? It turns out the retreat he was sent on, was actually a retreat to fire him. He was offered a job again, basically as a glorified intern within the organization. The retreat was to go over how to rebrand himself. The consultant advised against using the band he was so fond of as a reference.
